How To Make Dr Martens Comfortable

  • Wear thick socks.

If this is your first pair of Doc Martens its important that you follow these steps when breaking in your Doc Martens. Firstly put on a very thick pair of socks. Thick woolly socks will not only protect your feet from rubbing but will also help to stretch the leather where it is tight. The socks need to be very thick like the woolly ones you wear for winter, so get the woolliest socks out of your drawer and put them on. Make sure the socks cover your ankles to prevent any rubbing from the leather. Doc Marten socks are perfect to break in Doc Martens so its worth checking them out.

  • Wear two pairs of socks.

If you prefer, you can wear two pairs of socks instead of one thick pair. Wearing two pairs of socks to break in your Doc Martens allows the socks to rub on each other rather than on your skin.

  • Give your feet a rest!

Try breaking in Dr Martens on alternate days to give your feet time to recover and to reduce the risk of blisters!

  • Gradually go for short walks outside.

Once you are able to wear your Dr Martens for over an hour indoors without any discomfort you are now ready to venture into the great outdoors!Dont wear your new pair of Doc Marten shoes or boots outside when you are going to be walking for long distances. Pop them on for a few minutes when nipping to the shops. This way you will be able to tell if there are any places that may cause a blister.

  • Keep Your Feet Dry To Prevent Blisters

    Choosing The Right Socks

Avoid cotton socks as these tend to hold moisture next to your skin, which combined with friction causes blisters. Instead, choose a moisture wicking pair of polyester or wool socks like Bridgedale or Smartwool. Alternatively, you could try a thin pair of merino wool or polyester liner socks, with a second pair of thicker socks over the top. Whether you wear one pair of socks or two is down to personal comfort. However, its important to consider the thickness of your socks in relation to the fit of your footwear, as they can change the volume of your foot. You should also consider the level of insulation the sock you choose offers.

    Plan For Stream Crossings

    Marek Bialoglowy

Stream crossings can soak your feet, and wet feet are prone to blisters. Bring dedicated water shoes or sandals to cross streams so you dont get your hiking boots and socks wet. I like to bring a small travel sized quick dry towel to dry my feet with after stream crossings before I put my shoes and socks pack on. If you do need to cross in your boots, bring a back up pair of dry socks to change into afterwards.

I Recommend: I bring a small Pack Towl quick-dry towel on pretty much every hike. I use it for washing my face on backpacking trips, wiping sweat off my brow and drying off my feet. Buy: MEC | REI | Backcountry.com

Duct Tape: A walking friend of mine uses duct tape on his feet to prevent blisters on the ball of the foot. He says the key is to get the soft tape that doesnt have the strapping threads in it, and to always use it whenever you walk, not just on long walks. Benefits are that it is cheapa giant roll doesnt cost much, and you may already have some in the house. The drawback could be getting a skin allergy to the adhesive. Be alert for signs of redness and itching, and discontinue use if these develop.

Duct tape can also work by making it into a bandage, so the adhesive is not over the sensitive area. Take a piece of duct tape and trim it, so it is slightly larger than the sensitive area. Then stick it on a larger piece of duct tape, the sticky sides together.

Now apply it over the areayou have the slick, non-adhesive side next to the skin, with the larger piece sticking it all in place. Sounds like a complicated way to make a Band-Aid, but it works in a pinch when you dont have a Band-Aid or dont have one large enough.

Cautions: The adhesive on duct tape has NOT been tested on human subjects, and you could have a nasty reaction to it. Likewise, using it on open wounds may mean that the chemicals in the tape can enter your wounds and may contribute to infection or a bad reaction.

The Best Hiking Boots To Prevent Blisters

While there are purists who love the old-school leather hiking boots, more and more hikers these days are switching to modern hiking boots that dont require any break-in period and fit like trail runners. In fact, its pretty common to see hikers doing massive mileage on the Appalachian or Pacific Crest Trails wearing trail runners or even sneakers.

Everyone has different types of feet, and some boots will fit better than others. You should read online reviews with high ratings to see what people say is comfortable for them, and then go to an outdoors store and try them on. If youre ordering online, chose a retailer like REI where you can easily send the boots back.

When you do try on the hiking boots, wiggle your toes around and make sure theyve got adequate space to move. If the toe box seems too snug, consider getting boots a half size larger they will give your feet some room to swell, minimizing foot rub and ultimately preventing blisters. If you hike long days, its not uncommon for your feet to swell afterwards. This is especially true if you hike at altitude.

You also want a boot thats waterproof yet breathable. If your feet sweat and the water cant escape, the wet socks can cause friction and blisters. Boots that are beefed up trail running shoes are usually a good choice because theyll fit like a sneaker.

    Strategies To Prevent Foot Blisters

Blisters are a common complaint of walkers and runners. If you have just started walking or running, switched your shoes, or started doing longer workouts, you may get blisters on your feet and toes.

A blister is a fluid-filled sac caused by friction . Walkers and runners dread them, but there are ways to prevent most foot blisters. You can eliminate sources of rubbing in your shoes, toughen and protect your skin, keep your feet cool and dry, and be alert for hot spots that will turn into blisters if not treated.

    How Do Blisters Happen

Most blisters form when your skin rubs against your shoes or socks repeatedly over time. The damaged upper layer of skin shears away from the layers beneath and fluid collects in the space to create a firm bubble under the skin forming the dreaded blister. They develop very quickly, can take several days to heal, and if they break open they can become infected, making the pain even worse.

Blisters develop most frequently in the summer because on hot, humid days our feet tend to swell up from water retention, causing our shoes to squeeze our feet in certain areas. Feet also get sweatier in the summer. So, when your feet are both swollen and sweaty its a dangerous combination, ripe for feet friction.

There are lots of activities that can cause blisters too. In ill-fitting shoes, activities like running, hiking or even golfing and gardening can lead to painful blisters from the repetitive movements. Hikers get them frequently, especially when their socks get wet, causing friction in their hiking boots. Any activity that requires a lot of walking, like visiting an amusement park with your family, or a day of shopping, can be ruined with shoes that are more chic than comfortable. Going out for a night in town? You dont want to wake up with blisters the next morning. Taking a big vacation soon? Watch out! All that walking and sightseeing can leave you feeling cultured, but they can also lead to painful feet.

To properly and safely drain a running blister do the following:

    • Wash your hands. Dont withhold on the water and soap.
    • Wipe a needle with alcohol to sterilize it. You can also boil it for at least 10 minutes. Option, use 1cc medical syringe to suck the fluid in a sterile way.
    • Cautiously pierce the blister in several spots. Choose spots close to the blisters edge.
    • Drain the fluid out with a clean piece of gauze or cotton but leave the skin covering the blister behind. This is an important defensive skin layer that helps prevent infection.
    • Apply antiseptic cream on the wound, then cover it with a second skin to stave off bacteria. You can also tape the blister overtop for extra safety.
