Best Insulated Hiking Boots: Salomon Toundra Pro Snow Boots
Your feet have two big asks for boots during cold-weather hikes: “Please keep me dry and warm.” With the Salomon Toundra Pro Snow Boots, your toes won’t need to worry about either. The uppers are made to shield you from snow and slush with durable waterproof leather. For warmth, they’re lined with water-resistant insulation that holds up in temperatures down to -40 degrees Fahrenheit. Another well-designed feature is their Contagrip tractioned soles, which offer stability in ice and snow. From the sound of it, their 4.5-star rating is well-deserved. “I have put in 20+ miles on these across rocks, mud, snow, scree slopes, and overall trails and have not found them lacking at any point,” one reviewer wrote. “For the hiker and snowshoer, these have the right rigidness in the ankle, solidness in the overall boot, and surprisingly good movement and flex in the toe box to arch.”
If the Salomon Toundra Pro Snow Boots are out of stock during your next Amazon visit, shoppers say you’ll be equally warm and comfortable in the Merrell Thermo Aurora 2 Mid-Shell Waterproof Snow Boot. Its interior is lined with cozy fleece for warmth, while its exterior features a durable layer of waterproof leather and a grippy outsole. For a more budget-friendly option, you can opt for the highly rated Manfen Women’s Hiking Boots.

How To Find Your Best
Foot shape and gait are unique to each person, so a shoe that fits one person might not fit another. Our picks in this guide offer certain featuresincluding expertly designed lacing systems and wider toe boxesthat will be comfortable for you whether your foot is wide or narrow. Still, theres no replacement for trying on a boot to see exactly how it fits your foot.
If you buy your boots online, we recommend that you order several different boots or several sizes of one boot from a retailer that provides free shipping on returns. When ordering online, always order your boots true to size or a half size upbut never a half size down. Generally speaking, I tend to size everyone up a half size, said REIs Beth Henkes. For example, if I measure someone, and they are dead on an 8, in most boots I am going to grab them an 8½ and at least start there.
Better yet, go to an outdoor-gear store, ideally at the end of the day. Feet can swell and change sizes, so its important to buy the boots when our feet are their largest, said residency-trained podiatrist and former Wirecutter writer Jim McDannald.
You should do the following things at home or in a store to test whether your new boots fit you well:

Also Great: La Sportiva Ultra Raptor Ii Gtx
While not an exact update, La Sportivas Ultra Raptor II boots replace our former top pick, the La Sportiva Sabers, and carry over many of the same qualities we loved in those boots: The Raptors are lightweight, flexible, versatile, and well-tractioned. Unlike our other picks, these are designed on trail running mids and outsoles, rather than on the mold of a standard hiking boot, for a lighter fit. Like our top pick, they also strike that ideal balance of waterproof and breathable, which can be tough to come by. And compared with our other picks, they have more support around the toes for protection. However, they require some break-in time before theyre truly comfortable. And compared with our top pick, the Salomons, the Raptors offer a narrow fit that is less likely to fit all foot shapes.
The Raptor boots biggest win is their weight: A pair of the mens boots weighs about 2 pounds, while a pair of womens boots weighs 1 pound 7 ounces. This makes them some of the lightest of the boots we tested and provides significant advantages on the trail, especially if you want to move quickly. We noticed that our legs were less fatigued after a hike in these boots than with our top pick, and it was easier to drive in the Raptors because theyre much more flexible in the mid-foot than your average hiking boots.
Choosing The Best Hiking Shoe
Since this is the most important piece of gear it is super important to make the right choice. Consider what you plan to do. Are you headed to the desert or the snow? Will you carry a lot of weight or are you trail running? How far do yo plan to go? Will the terrain be sandy, hard packed, rocky, or wet?
Answering the above questions can help you when choosing hiking shoes if you should have a low or high cut shoe or if you need to consider breathabiltiy or waterproofing, or if you need to get the biggest lugs to carry over slippery scree.
If you plan on going long distances look for cushioning and built in protection, for middle distances ‘all-around’ options are best and for short jaunts look for lightweight shoes.

Best For Trail Running: Salomon Speedcross 5 Trail Running Shoe

They’re incredibly breathable and have a supportive fit that provides ample cushioning as you run over rocks and branches. Combined with their signature flexible forefoot, the shoes allow you to confidently approach uphills and switchbacks without fear of slipping. According to reviewers, they work on any terrain dirt, mud, slush, snow, you name it.
What Were Looking For
Boots versus sneakers: Talk to almost any serious hiker or outdoor-gear enthusiast these days, and youll hear the same story: stiff and heavy hiking boots are out, flexible and lightweight trail runners are in. Elite hikers, long-distance hikers no one is wearing boots above the ankle, says Dr. Rachel Gross, an assistant professor at the University of Colorado in Denver studying the history of outdoor clothing and gear. Trail runners are essentially grippier, more hiking-specific sneakers, and theyre built for comfort. In the old days when you bought hiking boots youd have to wear them around your neighborhood before the hike, to be confident you wouldnt get blisters, says Cris Hazzard of HikingGuy.com. Now its the opposite you can put on a pair of new trail runners and do a long-distance hike.
Thats not to say boots dont have their place. In fact, the best hiking boots are so lightweight and comfortable that they may as well be sneakers except more durable. Rather than wearing out in a few months, theyll last forever and serve you especially well on wet or gravelly terrain. If youre hiking over really rough rocks, a hiking shoe or a more traditional boot would protect your foot, Hazzard admits. Sections of rocks on the Appalachian Trail are thin and stacked so you cant step flat on them, and thats the case where Id recommend something beefier, because it shreds shoes quickly.

How And Where We Tested
In 2018, we tested 26 pairs of boots. In 2020, we tested 10 more, and in 2021, we tested seven additional pairs plus an update of our runner-up pick. To get multiple opinions, we handed them out to 26 testers, both male and female, plus the guide authors. We asked each of our testers to hike at least 30 miles totaland they went for it, hiking in 13 states and three provinces. They tackled loose gravel, groomed trails, and brush. They schlepped through mud, splashed in water, scampered up steep inclines, slid on snow, and even wore the boots into town and around the block. They hiked during the spring, summer, fall, and winter months.
Our testers hiked for over 1,200 miles, taking more than 2 million steps across 13 states, three provinces, and four countries.
And while they hiked, they tracked their steps and distance using fitness trackers. They also recorded information about the hike and the weight of their packs. And they took notes about the terrain and climate, in addition to recording their thoughts on the boots and the break-in time required for each pair. Some hiked with kids, while pregnant, and with dogs and friends. In the end, during 2018, 2020, and 2021, our testers hiked for over 1,200 miles, taking more than 2 million steps.

The natural bending tendency accommodates the foot through the natural strike pattern. Compressed EVA is special in that in when it was created a black of the material is put into a mold, then heat is added until it can be formed into the final shape.
Best For Ankle Support: Vasque Talus Trek Ultradry Hiking Boot
Our digital executive editor, Deanne Kaczerski, has been taking to the trails in Vasque’s Talus Trek for the last few years, and we think the updated version of this style is another awesome contender for those with touchy ankles. The easy speed-lacing construction allows you to customize how tight you’d like them to hug your ankles. Kaczerski vouches that they can get a bit hot in the summer, but they overall keep her feet dry and steady, especially on super rocky terrain.
