Is Your Baby Ready For Shoes

Infant toddler shoe size chart

First, ask yourself if your child is really old enough for shoes. They really dont need them until theyre walking.

Before a baby starts to walk, shoes are only necessary for warmth, says Andersen.

In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics says not wearing shoes is actually beneficial for a babys foot development, and you can probably get by with just socks for keeping their feet warm.

Once your child is upwardly mobile, they may really only need shoes outside or in public places and not at home, where bare feet are probably OK as long as youve baby-proofed.

When they start to take steps, for safety, to protect them from potential foreign bodies, Andersen says. They dont need actual support as toddlers, only protection.

Use A Shoe Size Gauge

Using a size gauge is another simple method of measuring your kids shoe size. Theyre available to buy online and at some shoe retailers.

Heres what you need:

  • Measuring device.

And heres what you do:

  • Stand up straight: Ask your child to stand up with their back straight, facing forward.
  • Place the foot: Have a look at your measuring device and locate where the heel should be. Then place the right heel in position.
  • Note the results: Write down the numbers facing you, and you should have the correct length.
  • Measure the width: Some shoe measuring devices have a bar that you slide over your childs foot to measure the width. Consult the instructions. If not, you can use the ribbon or shoelace techniques mentioned in the two methods above.

Shoe Shopping Tips For Older Kids

  • Let them move: Once your child is wearing both shoes, let them do a strut around the shop. Watch how they walk and see if the shoe provides support, or looks uncomfortable. Then ask your child how they feel be specific ask if they feel tight or too loose.
  • Thumbs up: While your child is wearing the shoes, try to fit your thumb between the heel and the back of the shoe you want it snug but not tight, so you avoid blisters. Then use your thumb to press at the front feel for the big toe and how far forward it sits. There should be a thumbs width between the toe and the end of the shoe.
  • Dont think too big: If youre on a budget, It can be tempting to buy a shoe thats a few sizes too big. This isnt ideal at this age, your child is active and needs a supportive shoe that wont come off unexpectedly.

Finding The Right Fit

The trick to finding the right shoe is making sure it fits. Though a little extra space in the toe is necessary, don’t try to make footwear purchases last longer by buying shoes a few sizes too big. A novice walker has enough trouble without slipping out of his or her shoes.

When your baby’s trying on shoes, watch your child’s response. If a pair seems to hurt or if they are having trouble walking, take them off. Avoid trendy styles especially those with pointy toes, which can pinch tiny toes and restrict growth. Also avoid clogs, which look cute but fall off easily.

How To Take Measurements

In the following pictures and guides, we will present two ways of correctly measuring the length of the foot of both a baby and an older child.

  • 1.

Taking measurement of a toddler foot is simple. If our child is asleep, remove the socks so that the measurement is done for a bare foot. Then take a measurement in centimeters or inches with a ruler, grabbing the tip of the largest toe and checking the distance to the heel. Remember that your baby is growing very fast – it is worth adding 0.5 – 0.7 cm to the measurements for the shoes to be as comfortable as possible.

  • 2.

In the case of older children, the length of the foot can be measured quickly. The child should stand with its bare foot on a clean sheet of paper put on a flat surface. Mark the tip of the toes and the end of the heel. The child can take its foot off the paper. Take a measurement by drawing a line connecting the two points. You should also add from 0.5 to 0.7 cm to the final result for the shoes to be comfy.

How To Measure Baby’s Feet

To start, have your child stand with their weight distributed evenly on both feet.

To check length, make sure you can press your thumb between the longest toe and the end of the shoe. Children need about ½ of space for the toes to move freely. Next, check that your pinkie can fit snugly between the heel and back of the shoe. To check width, make sure you can grasp some material at the widest part of the foot.

Ideally, you should use our baby shoe size chart to test shoes later in the day, since childrens feet swell over the course of the day.

Common Mistakes To Avoid

There are a few common traps in childrens shoe-buying to avoid:

  • Dont aim for a mini-me. Often will put their children in mini versions of their own athletic shoes, says Andersen. Depending on the shoe, it may not have the flexibility that a child needs to develop normal musculature of the foot.
  • Dont use worn hand-me-downs. Its best not to share shoes, says Andersen. They break down after they are worn by one child. When a shoe becomes worn, it loses its original structure. This could cause a childs foot to rub against the shoe and become irritated, or it could cause the child to shift their weight improperly while walking or running, Andersen explains.
  • Dont forget to keep an eye on how the shoes fit after you buy them. Check their current shoes often to make sure they are not touching the toes, says Andersen.

And have your childs feet measured each and every time you buy shoes for them, Andersen says, because growth spurts could take you by surprise. This could be as often as every three months. Thats right: Before you know it, youll be right back in the shoe store shopping for the next pair!

How To Measure Your Baby’s Feet

So, let’s get measuring! While you can hold a ruler up to those little feet, it will probably be a challenge to get an exact measurement, especially if they are kicking or curling their toes. Plus, it is important to get a measure of the foot while standing, because the foot will tend to have a different size when under a little weight. That’s why we created our handy printable size chart!

Make sure to measure both feet! It is normal for one foot to be bigger than the other, so you will want to know the size of both feet and shop based on the size of the bigger foot.

Now that you’ve sized your baby’s feet, you’re ready to pick their new favorite pair of baby shoes. Keep in mind that brands vary in sizing standards, so look for the exact inches or centimeters when using sizing charts.

Kids Shoe Sizing Tips And Advice

Kids’ shoe sizes can be confusing to navigate. Unlike clothing sizes, your child’s shoe size doesn’t correspond to their age, unless they’re a baby. Baby shoes are listed by age in month. However, you should still measure their feet, since some little ones grow faster than others!

Once your child graduates into kid-size shoes, the sizing system switches to numbers. Sizes 3.5 to 10 are considered little kid shoes. From Size 10.5 onward, you’re into big kid sizes. When your big kid outgrows their size 13.5 kids’ shoes, the system changes again to adult sizing, and you’ll be shopping for a pair of size 1’s.

How To Measure A Childs Foot

In order to get a correct measurement, a child needs to be standing upright with weight balanced between the heel and the toe. Ideally, have them stand against a wall with equal weight on each foot. This provides a great opportunity to put a mark on the height chart too! Place something, like a ruler or book, at the tip of the longest toe, and take the measurement from the wall to that point. In terms of width, listen to your kid. If there is a liner inside a boot, take it out and make sure their foot isnt falling over the edges.

Whether You’re Buying Babys First Infant Shoes Or Looking Into Shoes For A Beginning Walker You Probably Have Questions Here’s Some Expert Advice For Finding The Right Shoe Size And Fit

Whether youre headed to the shoe store or shopping online, buying your babys first pair of shoes can surface many questions. What should you look for in a shoe for someone just learning to walk? How will you know if it fits?

I think parents always worry that a toddler may not be able to express how the shoe feels, says Dr. Jane Andersen, a Chapel Hill, North Carolina, podiatrist and spokesperson for the American Podiatric Medical Association.

Dont worry it is possible to take some of the guesswork out of finding the right size and fit for your baby or toddler. Heres how.

How Fast Feet Grow According To Child Age

This may vary from child to child, but on average, a toddlers foot can grow about 1 inch per year. However, from the age of 2-5, the foot grows around 0.75 inches in one year.

Moreover, in the age between 6-11, the foot growth is 0.5 inches. It is important to measure your childs feet to make sure they dont wear oversize shoes. Because size feet can cause discomfort and issues related to health.

On average, foot growth in girls stops at the age of 13. However, in boys, the foot development stopped at the age of 15 or 16.

Common Shoe Sizing Mistakes To Avoid

If you follow the tips above, and make sure to use a size chart from the brand you’re shopping with, you shouldn’t have any problems selecting the perfect size shoes for your baby’s feet. Here are a few “gotchas” to make sure to avoid…

Hand-me-downs

Try to avoid hand-me-downs while your little one is still mastering motor skills. Shoes mold to the child’s foot through use, and hand-me-down shoes will be molded to the original wearer’s foot. This could cause irritation in places where the shoe rubs against the foot, and might even cause them to shift their weight incorrectly while walking.

Keeping an eye on foot size

They grow up so fast, and in the blink of an eye they will need to size-up about every 3-4 months. Monitor that growth with regular checks every couple months to make sure they don’t start to outgrow the shoes. It helps to set a reminder on your phone so you remember to check.

If your little starts taking shoes off, hobbling around, or rubbing their feet, those are late signs that they’ve outgrown their shoes and need a new pair quickly!

Go big!

If you have done all the calculations and find your baby between sizes, go with the larger size. A little extra room to grow is a good thing.

Selecting The Correct Width

How Often To Size Your Kids Feet

Tiny tootsies grow fast between the ages two and six, their feet can grow up to half a size every two to four months. Experts recommend that up until four years, you make a shoe change every two to three months. To ensure the size is correct, look to measure their feet every two months .

After their fourth birthday, foot growth does slow down a bit, and they may not need a shoe change that often. Experts recommend every four to six months. However, continue sizing their feet at least every three to four months.

Do Babies Wear Socks With Shoes

In general, wearing socks with shoes is recommended for everyone, and that includes the little ones. Wearing socks help reduce friction between the feet and the shoes, absorbs moisture and damage to the skin from constant rubbing with shoes. However, socks should be properly fitted as very tight socks could also have harmful effects such as hampering the growth of the feet especially for babies, and restricting air and blood circulation.

Shoe Shopping Tips For Toddlers

  • Bring socks: Unless youre shopping for sandals, your tot will likely have to wear socks with shoes. Use the appropriate socks thick for winter boots and light for summer sneakers. Then the shoe will fit right even when theres extra padding.
  • Forget trends: Dont give in to the latest trends of clogs, pointy boots, or high heels. These arent likely to provide any beneficial support to a toddler whos still mastering their walk. Instead, go for something supportive.
  • Provide options: Some toddlers want to decide what they wear. If so, find a few different, but appropriate, shoes and ask your little one to choose which they like best.
  • Opt for Velcro: A hook and loop closure such as Velcro is much easier for a toddler to put on without assistance. This way, your child learns how to put on shoes, and you save time otherwise wasted tying shoelaces.
