Who Makes The Best Winter Boots

The Best HIKING SHOES For Women!

The best winter boot is subjective and depends on your needs. KEEN, Merrell, and Oboz all make an excellent winter hiking boot for women. If you need a classic snow boot, the Kamik Snowgem is comfortable, warm, and easy on the wallet. For a stylish leather option, the ECCO Knee High Bootand Frye Bootie cant be beat.

S For Finding Your Perfect Fit

There are a few important steps to follow when it comes to trying on hiking shoes. You should try the shoes on and not order them online.

These 6 steps will guide you through the process of trying out the hiking shoes.

  • Go shoe shopping in the afternoon, so feet are swollen at least a bit. Its what happens anyway when hiking, so it makes sense.
  • Try the shoes with your hiking socks on. Bring the socks that you plan to wear on your hikes with you. Avoid using cotton, but choose wool or synthetic socks – they dry out faster and are good at preventing the blisters.
  • Try it on, lace it up, and check for pressure points. Shoes should feel comfortable and non-constricting. You dont want any part of your shoe to feel loose!
  • There should be a thumbs width space between your toes and the front of your shoes.
  • If youre wearing special insoles or orthotics, take them with you and insert them into the shoes when trying them on.
  • Use the ramp! Walk up and down. This tests the shoes snugness. No part of the shoe should feel loose. When you go up the board, observe for any heel lift. When you go down, check if your toes hit the front of the shoes. If your heel rises more than a quarter of an inch, try adjusting the laces. If your toes hit the front, try sizing up.
  • Other Versions Of The Salomon X Ultra 3 Low

Weve covered the mens version of the X Ultra 3 GTX Low for this review, but the line comes in a number of variations. Within the low-top options, theres a non-waterproof X Ultra 3 Aero, which ditches the Gore-Tex membrane and swaps the upper material to a more open mesh design. The result is greatly improved breathability and a 1-ounce savings per pair . Further, both the GTX and Aero models are offered with womens-specific fits and unique colorways.

The Best Womens Winter Hiking Boots

Just because its cold out doesnt mean you have to stop hiking. In fact, winter means fewer crowds and some amazing opportunities to have the trail all to yourself. Choose a boot that provides adequate grip and insulation, and winter hiking could soon become your new favorite pastime.

Oboz Bridger 7 Insulated Winter Boots

Whether shoveling the driveway or hiking big miles, these boots will keep you warm, dry, and comfortable. Like most winter hiking boots, they have 200 g of insulation. On top of that, though, they also have wool-topped insoles to keep feet warm on the bottom. The waterproof leather is impressively durable and has stood up to many rocky hikes and winter scrambles.

The directional lugs provide great traction, and specialized winterized rubber soles are infused with silica to improve grip on icy surfaces. And it works. We ventured out on extremely slick roads and frozen trails and never slipped. The 7-inch height provides plenty of ankle support while still allowing full range of movement.

Merrell Thermo Chill Mid Waterproof Boots

Between the additional insulation and waterproofing, winter hiking boots can get expensive. But the Merrell Thermo Chill manages to pack all the necessary winter features into a reasonably priced package. And more than that, they rank among the best waterproof winter boots out there. The 200 g of M-Select insulation is warm without being bulky.

These are available in both a regular and a wide fit.

Hiking And Backpacking In Trail Running Shoes

In recent years, trail running shoes have taken off as a go-to choice for day hikers, fastpackers, and thru-hikers alike. And it makes a lot of sense: with a lightweight and flexible feel but solid traction, you can cover more ground with less effort. Further, most day hikers and thru-hikers keep pack weight to a minimum, so theres less need for the stability and ankle support of a sturdy shoe or boot. In fact, weve spoken to some PCT thru-hikers who made the switch from boots to trail runners mid-trip, and theyve had nothing but good things to say about their levels of comfort and nimble feelprovided they kept their pack weight down.

But there are a number of obvious issues. One is durability. Its unlikely youll get as many miles out of your trail runners as you would a lightweight hiking shoe or full-on hiking boot, which are designed to handle more use and abuse. Second, with minimal materials and bulk, a trail runner simply does not offer the same amount of protection as beefier hiking footwear, especially those with generous rubber rands and leather uppers. Finally, we dont recommend trail running shoes for heavy loads or particularly rugged terrain, when youll want a more supportive option. But despite these potential downsides, trail runners seem to be here to stay as a popular hiking and backpacking option.

    Best Womens Hiking Boot Brands

Merrell is one of my all time favorite brands for boots. All they make are footwear and they have been doing it for over 20 years. Columbia in my opinion is the best value proposition there is. Their gear is always of good quality at a reasonable price.

Keen manufactures a quality line of footwear for Men and Women, they are also heavy into protecting the environment and supporting non-profit causes. Ahnu may be the least known makers of footwear, but they are well known in the hiking community for making quality, reasonably priced hiking shoes and boots. They were recently acquired by Teva and hopefully will continue their tradition of making quality footwear.

Merrell Moab 2 Wp Low Hiking Shoes Womens

If you are looking for a cheaper option with all the bells and whistles, the Merrell Moab is for you. The Moab is one of the most affordable in the bunch, and it still is a fantastic shoe. It is comfortable, has excellent traction, has great support, and it is waterproof. If you are looking for something cheaper then the Oboz Bdry, then I highly recommend these shoes.

The main negative is that these shoes are more on the heavier side, and they are are not as durable as the Oboz. But I feel like the price for these shoes is very solid. There have also been some complaints on the shoe being a bit cramped, but that can easily be fixed with sizing up a 1/2 size. If you are worried, I would buy from a place with a good return policy like REI.

    How To Find Your Best

Best Hiking Shoes For Women – Top 10 List

Foot shape and gait are unique to each person, so a shoe that fits one person might not fit another. Our picks in this guide offer certain featuresincluding expertly designed lacing systems and wider toe boxesthat will be comfortable for you whether your foot is wide or narrow. Still, theres no replacement for trying on a boot to see exactly how it fits your foot.

If you buy your boots online, we recommend that you order several different boots or several sizes of one boot from a retailer that provides free shipping on returns. When ordering online, always order your boots true to size or a half-size upbut never a half-size down. Generally speaking, I tend to size everyone up a half-size, said REIs Beth Henkes. For example, if I measure someone and they are dead on an 8, in most boots I am going to grab them an 8½ and at least start there.

Better yet, go to an outdoor-gear store, ideally at the end of the day. Feet can swell and change sizes, so its important to buy the boots when our feet are their largest, said residency-trained podiatrist and former Wirecutter writer Jim McDannald.

You should do the following things at home or in a store to test whether your new boots fit you well:

Keen Women’s Targhee II Mid Waterproof Hiking Boot: available at and Dick’s Sporting Goods

Our take: These durable boots are good to go right out of the box, with no breaking in period.

What we like: The best feature of these rugged, lightweight winter hiking boots is the ankle shanks that provide additional support. The toe guards also protect feet from hazards on the trail, and the waterproofing keeps feet dry and cozy.

What we dislike: Warm-weather hikers report that these boots made their feet too sweaty. Stick to winter hiking in these.

Salomon Womens X Ultra 3 Gtx

    • Weight: 1 lb. 10 oz.
    • Features: Gore-Tex Boot Liner, Sculpted Anatomically To Hold Foot, Advanced Chasis, Shock Liners And EVA Heels Cups Provide Support, Mud Guards, Integrated Toe Caps, Dual Rubber Sole For Aggressive Grip
    • Pros: Weight, Durability, Comfort, Performance,
    • Cons: Price, Warm With Gore-Tex

If you are traveling with only outdoor adventure on your mind, then these Ultra 3s may be just what you need. Often voted one of the top hiking shoes on the market, these are built with only the rocky trail in mind. Salomon has strong name recognition and there is a good reason for that.

From their waterproof but breathable design, down to their grippy and rugged bottom soles these shoes will support you through every trail hike on your trip. The reason the Ultra 3 stands out in the line-up is their Advanced Chassis surrounded by foam, that will have your feet forgetting youre walking in the wilderness at all! This technology also allows for a more stable heel membrane that will keep you upright.

Naturally, their design is aimed at only intense outdoor sports, and we wouldnt recommend them for a city-oriented trip. However, theyre super useful for tackling mountains. The only reason these take the number two spot is theyre a little more aggressive than what most hikers need and the price. I use these as my go-to hikers in the Canadian Rockies for dry day ascents.

Do I Need Waterproof Hiking Shoes

Best Hiking Shoes for Women 2020

That depends. Keep in mind that no pair of hiking shoes is entirely water-resistant. Although some are marketed this way, full submersion in a puddle for more than a few seconds will soak through just about any pair of hiking shoes. Also, because they are low cut around the ankle, water is prone to getting in at the top of the shoe anyway.

Still, waterproof shoes do include membranes, like GORE-TEX, that can keep a significant amount of moisture out. When walking through dewy grass or muddy trails, waterproof shoes will keep your socks and feet drier than non-waterproof shoes.

Shoes with waterproof membranes are less breathable. If you will be hiking in hot and dry areas, youll probably feel more comfortable in non-waterproof shoes.

Best For Rock Scrambling: La Sportiva Tx2 Approach Shoe

Approach shoes serve as a hybrid between shoes designed for hiking and those intended for rock climbing, so on difficult trails with a good amount of boulders looking at you, Precipice Trail at Acadia National Park they’ll offer extra grip where you need it. The TX2 is great for hikes with technical terrain. It’s got a sticky outsole and a lacing harness that extends all the way to the toe to help you get a snug fit. Rubber rands on the toes and heels add grip and protection, and a stiff midsole supports your feet when footholds are less than ideal. In their review, one shopper says, “I chose these over the TX4s due to their lighter weight and overall they had a pretty good rating for their climbing ability. I barely noticed them on the back of my harness while I was climbing. I felt good climbing easy friction slabs in them and scrambling down gullies this past weekend. Probably one of my best purchases this year.”

WHICH HIKING SHOES SHOULD I BUY? | BEST HIKING SHOES FOR MEN & WOMEN

    WeightUpper

For the wide-footed hikers among us, we think the Topo Athletic Trailventure WP – Women’s deserves special attention. We love the design and found them incredibly comfortable, especially for those with a wider foot. Without feeling bulky, these boots are well-padded, lightweight, and designed for long days. We were excited to find a boot that not only worked well for those with wide feet but also felt slim and sleek on the trail. These boots have great tread, a comfortable ankle, and a stable base. Overall, we had very few gripes with these boots and highly recommend them to any wide-footed lady.

The biggest issue we found in terms of design is the eyelets on the lower part of the lacing system. Since they are made from thread, they lack durability and could blow out eventually, though we didn’t run into this issue during our three-month test period. If your feet tend to feel confined in regular hiking boots, we recommend trying this pair for its width but also its strong all-around performance.

    Ankle And Foot Support

If you plan on hiking across tumbled rocks or uneven terrain, your women’s winter hiking boots should include additional ankle support in the form of shanks or additional padding. You’ll also want winter hiking boots that come up higher on the ankle to provide support.

Additionally, foot support should include a comfortable foot bed with plenty of arch support. This will keep you comfortable for long hikes and prevent leg fatigue.
