Louboutins Brand Strategy: More Than Remarkable Its Trademarkable

The red-sole shoe designer wins next step in lawsuit with YSL infringement on creative marketing.

If you follow womens fashion shoe designers, there is no chance the name Christian Louboutin has slipped from your vocabulary. He is most famous for his red-sole pumps that range anywhere from $500 $22,000 a pair. With income like that coming from two things you wear on your feet, theres no questioning a need for trademark.

Louboutin won his trademark for the red-sole heels in 2008. U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states that Louboutin has the exclusive right to make red-soled shoes for womens high fashion designer footwear.

But little did they know then, this patent for one of a kind, Italian made by the finest craftsman, hand crafted down to the last stitch or stud footwear, would lead to $1 million lawsuit with competing designer, Yves Saint Laurent three years later.

YSL stated no one could claim an entire color in the fashion industry. Designer began making monochromatic shoes, from blue with blue soles, to yellow with yellow soles, and most controversial, red with red soles.

According to the Telegraph.co.uk, the first ruling in 2011, agreed with YSL that no designer could monopolize an entire color. But immediately Louboutins team of lawyers appealed the case and won in it own way. The federal appeals court has decided to reject the earlier ruling, stating that Louboutin is entitled to its trademark on red soles, except when the entire shoe is red.

Song lyrics:“These expensive. / These is red bottoms. / These is bloody shoes.”

How often do you look at the sole of a shoe? Yet, everybody recognises the infamous red soled shoe of a Christian Louboutin pair of heels. Louboutin successfully managed to turn the once-overlooked part of a shoe into a global iconic symbol, making his heels some of the most sought after shoes in the business. Everybody recognises the red sole of a Christian Louboutin heel, yet not many people know how or why the idea came about. Read on to find out the truth behind the Louboutin sole.

The Early Years

Growing up in Paris, one of the most fashion-conscious cities on the planet, Christian Louboutin was always surrounded by glamour and fashion. At only sixteen years old, one of his first jobs was sewing sequins onto costumes at the world famous cabaret, Folies Bergère. However, it was actually a trip to a museum that sparked his love for womens shoes. During the visit, Louboutin was shocked by a sign that was forbidding women from wearing heels, so as not to mark the floor. It was this idea of the forbidden shoe that inspired Louboutin to create the heels today that we know and love. He wanted to create a shoe that inspired and empowered women, which is what makes the fiery red sole all the more appealing.

When Did Christian Louboutin Shoes Become Popular

Christian Louboutin is an eponymous French shoe brand that is recognizable around the world for its iconic red sole.

Louboutin began sketching shoe designs during his teenage years before working for legendary fashion houses like Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent during the 1980s.

In 1991, the Christian Louboutin brand was born when the designer launched his Parisian shoe salon.

It quickly gained a celebrity following, with the brand becoming infamous for its skyscraper heels that were often over 120mm in height.

Louboutin said that his mission was to create shoes that make a woman look sexy, beautiful, to make her legs look as long as possible.

While more wearable designs have started to feature in the brands collection, Louboutin is synonymous with evening-wear shoes and special occasion styles.

Beyond A Trend: Red Bottoms & Social Proof

Clearly red bottom shoes are a fashion statement, but it turns out there is a scientific reason that they are so popular.

Best-selling author and Wharton School Professor, Jonah Berger, talks about this at length in his book called Contagious: Why Things Catch On. The book does an incredible job explaining what makes things go viral and why certain products or ideas become popular. He dissects the science of social influence and shares something he calls the STEPPS framework. Each letter in the acronym breaks down a social influencer: Social Currency, Triggers, Emotion, Practical Value, Public, and Stories.

While I wish I had some time go over every element of the framework, lets discuss the one that applies to Christian Louboutin shoes: Public

Jonah Berger describes Public as follows: If something is built to show, its built to grow. The more public something is, the more likely people will imitate it. He says, Design products and initiatives that advertise themselves and create some visible behavioral residue.

He uses the popularity of red bottom shoes as the perfect example to convey Public. Christian Louboutin found a way to make his shoes more visible by adding his signature red color to the soles. This not only makes the shoes look more fashionable, but it makes them more memorable. And as Jonah Berger says, because of this feature, they end up advertising themselves.

Christian, born Jan. 7, 1963, is a French-Egyptian designer who began his career freelancing for various fashion houses before eventually beginning his own brand in 1992.

Although it took until the ’90s for Christian to develop his own label, he maintained a fervent interest in footwear for years prior to that. In 1976, the young budding designer visited the Musée national des Arts d’Afrique et d’Océanie in Paris on a trip that would change his fashion interests forever.

It was at that moment that he learned that African women were forbidden from wearing stiletto heels indoors because of the damage it could do to hardwood flooring. Such a notion compelled Christian to opt to defy traditional conventions with his brand and do something rebellious with his designs.

This is an ideology that has endured even today. Now, the French label manufactures a range of footwear in vibrant colors, patterns, and materials. Add in the adornment of spikes and jewels, and you can see why their shoes are truly one of a kind.

A Little History Of Red Shoes

This past April, Christian Louboutin filed a lawsuit against couture competitor Yves Saint Laurent, claiming that the legendary fashion house had committed trademark infringement when it manufactured and sold shoes with a ruby-red sole. On Monday, the NY Postreported that YSLs representatives had argued in court documents that the red sole cannot be considered proprietary to Louboutin: Red outsoles are a commonly used ornamental design feature in footwear, dating as far back as the red shoes worn by King Louis XIV in the 1600s and the ruby red shoes that carried Dorothy home in The Wizard of Oz.

Historically speaking, this is true! Red shoesif not always red soleshave long been associated with issues of power and identity. During the reign of Louis XIV, only aristocratic men had the right to wear shoes with red heelsthey were strictly reserved for the court. Thus the color neatly distinguished between the haves and have-nots. Red dye at the time was expensive, made by crushing the dried bodies of an imported Mexican insect called the cochineal, and only royals and their cohort could afford it. The shoes went out of style with the French Revolutionnot a time when one flaunted ones wealth and status.

Come out, come out! I cannot come in, for I must dance.

And the executioner said: I dont suppose you know who I am. I strike off the heads of the wicked, and I notice that my axe is tingling to do so.

Why Do Louboutins Have Red Soles

August 17, 2013, erwin,

Louboutins are designer shoes that are made famous by the footwear designer who bears the same name. Louboutins or Louboutin shoes are also known to have red soles or red bottoms and this color-based design has become a trademark of Christian Louboutin, the shoe designer. The red soles of Louboutin shoes have become so famous and synonymous with the brand that Christian Louboutin has actually obtained an official trademark for the design in the US. The red soles in Louboutins have evolved from being famous and trendy to an official design trademark from the shoe designer.

Louboutin shoes have become popular because of many celebrities and superstars that wear them. Starting in the 1990s, Louboutins have become synonymous with high-heeled shoes or stilettos as many fashion experts call them. All these stilettos are designed to make the legs look longer and sexier. The shoe designs are also accented with a red-china bottom that makes the shoes stand out and exude even more sexiness. Whenever people see Hollywood stars and A-listers wear stilettos with a red bottom, people would always think of them as Louboutin shoes. Stilettos in red soles have become an instantly recognizable brand of designer shoes. With its wide popularity, Christian Louboutin has eventually obtained a design trademark for his red soles back in 2008.

Red Bottoms In Pop Culture

Youve probably seen countless celebrities wear Christian Louboutin shoes from Taylor Swift, to Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, Meghan Markle, Selena Gomez, Blake Lively, Rihanna, and Katy Perry. And at a price point of $800 and up, theyve really become a status symbol.

Speaking of Christian Louboutins high price point, you may recall this being referenced in Ariana Grandes song, 7 rings, which is all about lavish spending and luxury. In one of the lyrics, she says that happiness is the same price as red bottoms.

There are a ton of other references to red bottoms in pop culture. Jennifer Lopez has an entire song called Louboutins. Hip hop star, Trina, has a song called Long Heels Red Bottoms, Cardi B mentions them in her song Bodak Yellow, and they are prominently featured in the TV show, Breaking Bad.

So what is it about red bottoms that makes them so special? I personally dont own a pair and have never tried them on, but its fascinating to hear Christian Louboutin himself talk about how these heels make women feel. He says they completely change your body language and you feel this sense of confidence from head to toe. In fact, he says its more important to feel sexy than comfortable I think some women would beg to differ, ha!

Christian Louboutin openly acknowledges the shoes high price point, yet I love that he stands behind it. Theyre certainly a premium product, but you also get what you pay for. These shoes are nothing short of quality.
