Oz Stylewatch: Why Is It So Hard To Find Australian

If you want to wear Australian-made shoes, expect to rock some workboots. But a small number of local designers are dipping a toe in the water

Finding Australian-made shoes in Australia is so difficult, its become part of local fashion lore.

In 1996, at his first Australian fashion week show, designer Akira Isogawa was so poor he could not afford shoes for his models, so he sent them out in red socks instead. The gamble paid off, with everyone talking about this bold move. But for most designers, the shortage of local footwear brands to work with and difficulty in sourcing shoes from overseas does not lead to iconic fashion moments.

Sydney stylist Emma Read tells Guardian Australia, Youre either digging through high street brands, or youre spending so much money. It can cost upwards of $1,000 a pair to have shoes made especially for a collection, and most runway shows feature more than 20 outfits. In addition to the cost, because of the long manufacturing process shoe styles have to be decided upon before the rest of the collection has even been designed. This, Read says is ridiculous. Most local designers are left with no choice but the high street, and even then options are limited. Often youre using styles youd only choose under duress, Read says.

Walking into a department store or boutique, youll have the same problem. If you want to buy high quality shoes that are a little fancy, but not insanely fancy, its very unlikely youll find an Australian pair.

All About The Product

When Weber came on as CEO, Brooks was selling two high-performance, stability running shoes, the Beast and the Addiction, and several cheaper models in the athletically-styled family footwear category. These “barbecue and lawnmowing shoes,”–the term Weber uses because that’s all you would do in them–made up half of Brooks’s business and were losing the company money. Brooks jettisoned more than half of its shoes and other products and focused solely on running.

“We were everything to everybody and were sixth, seventh, or eighth at everything,” Weber says. “Brooks was like every other athletic footwear company, only a lot smaller. We didn’t have the marketing spend. Our brand was tired and running on fumes.”

Weber knew specializing was the only way to survive when up against generalist-giants like Nike. The company built an in-house lab, brought in experts, dove into materials research, and extended its running product offerings while perfecting the fit and ride of its shoes.

“We stopped making shoes under $80 and shifted all to run. We burned the boats and the product got better and better and better,” Weber says. “The product experience is where you build a performance brand. You can’t get there with advertising. Advertising is a turbocharger, but the product is where you really create authenticity and credibility.”

Finding Running And Athletic Shoes Made In The Usa

In my last post, I explained why Im trying to avoid products buying made in China. If I cant find a particular item made in the USA, I hope to find a version manufactured in a country other than China. This is especially tough when it comes to running shoes.

New Balance is the only company I could find that offers athletic shoes made in America. Not all New Balance models are made in the USA, but if you search for made in USA on the companys website, youll get a list of its USA-made running and athletic shoes.Update: A May 4, 2014, website posting by New Balance states that the company defines made in the USA as a shoe that has a domestic value of at least 70 percent, meaning at least that much of the shoe was made or assembled in America.

Unfortunately, New Balance didnt offer shoes in my size, so I kept looking. I ended up buying a pair of Mizuno Wave Alchemy 11 shoesfrom Endless.com , which are made in Vietnam. Not all Mizunos are made in Vietnam a Mizuno customer service representative told me some are made in China. Looking on the back of the shoes tongue can tell you the manufacturing location. Mizuno delivered good customer service by answering my email within 36 hours.

My last running shoes were Asics Gel Cumulus. The shoes tongue shows they were made in China. My husbands Saucony Pro-Grid Ride running shoes were made in Indonesia.

S: Bankruptcy The Chariot Brooks For Women

In 1980, as a result of production issues with Brooks’s manufacturing facility in Puerto Rico, defective shoes began to arrive at sporting goods stores. Nearly 30 percent of the shoes were returned, and Brooks scrapped 50,000 pairs. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and was purchased at auction by footwear manufacturer Wolverine World Wide in 1981.

In 1982, stability became the top priority for runners, and Brooks introduced the Chariot, a medial post shoe that featured an angled wedge of harder-density foam in the midsole. Thicker on the inside of the shoe and tapered toward the outside, the Chariot represented a sea change in running-shoe design. In 1987, with Brooks for Women, it launched an anatomically adjusted line of shoes designed for women.

Early History: Founding Bruxshu Gymnasium Shoes Carmen Manufacturing

Brooks Sports, Inc. was founded in 1914 by John Brooks Goldenberg, following his purchase of the Quaker Shoe Company, a manufacturer of bathing shoes and ballet slippers. Based in Philadelphia, it operated as a partnership between John Goldenberg and his brothers, Michael and Frank. By 1920, Quaker Shoes had been renamed Brooks Shoe Manufacturing Co., Inc., and its shoes were sold under the brand name Bruxshu. In addition to bathing shoes and ballet slippers, it sold a gymnasium shoe, Ironclad Gyms. The company’s innovations included the 1938 introduction of orthopedic shoes for children, Pedicraft, and rubber brakes for roller skates , patented in 1944.

In 1938, the Goldenbergs bought the Carmen Shoe Manufacturing Company in Hanover, Pennsylvania. Until 1957 a better grade leather was purchased, cut, stitched and fit in Philadelphia, while the same procedure in Hanover used lower grade materials. Both shoes were sold in Philadelphia under the Brooks name, and ranged from inexpensive to high-priced.

From the garment factory fires in Bangladesh less than a year ago, and tracing back to the Nike sweatshop protests when I was in college , I have seen a lot of promises and a lot of talk over the yearsand not much real change in the apparel and shoe-making industry. I’m just not comfortable supporting businesses that, whether they are fully aware or not, end up using what amounts to slave labor to make the products I buy.
