How To Know Your Shoe Size

The most obvious sign is stretching or bulging on the outside of the forefoot. If your foot is obviously wider than the bottom of the shoe, and stretches beyond the sole, your shoe is probably too narrow.

Most running and training shoes can be purchased in a variety of widths. In addition, men may choose to purchase womens styles to achieve a narrower fit, and women can purchase mens shoes to get a wider fit.

How To Know If The Fit Is Right

Running shoes, gym trainers, sneakers, and most other types of footwear should tick the following boxes:

  • Heel: locked in and not slipping out when you bend the foot, walk, or run
  • Midfoot: snug but not tight, there should be no pinching
  • Toebox: there is a thumbs width space between your longest toe and the shoes front and the toes have enough room to splay sideways without pressure

Some niche sportswear such as track spikes, cycling shoes, and climbing footwear will have different fit standards as they require a snug, second-skin-like fit.

A shoe should feel right and comfortable straight from the box.

Dont rely on a break-in period to change the fit significantly.

Some issues like heel slipping, discomfort due to high arches, or a tendency to foot swelling can be helped with a customized lacing technique.

What Is The Average Shoe Width

How to determine foot Width size

About 90% of the popular is of a normal width. That means that if youre not sure of your foot width, you probably wear a normal width shoe, which would be a B for women and a D for men.

Usually, shoes will only note their width if it is outside of the standard. In other words, most shoes will not be marked with a B or D to indicate that they are standard width. If a shoe is not marked with a width at all, it is probably a standard width.

However, non-standard widths will usually be identified on boxes, and within the shoes on the label that is underneath the tongue of the shoe.

Wear Appropriate Socks Or Hosiery

Wear the socks, nylons, etc. that you would normally wear with the type of shoes you are trying on.

If you wear athletic socks with sneakers, wear athletic socks when trying on sneakers. If you wear hosiery with dress shoes, wear the same hosiery when you try them on. The thickness of the sock will have a big impact on the fit of the shoe.

Whens The Best Time Of Day To Buy/try On Shoes

Ideally, shoes should be tried on for size in the afternoon or early evening. This is because throughout the day, our feet swell slightly and become a bit bigger. By trying on shoes in the evening, youll make sure that they also fit you comfortably at the end of the day – which means no uncomfortable rubbing or pinching.

How To Check If Your Babys Shoes Fit

How to measure shoe size in under 30 seconds

Indents or red marks on your babys feet, or signs of teetering, dragging or discomfort when they walk, usually indicate that shoes are too tight. There should be some room approximately half an inch between your babys toes and the end of the shoe. You can check this by gently pressing your thumb at the tip of each shoe while your baby is standing.

Another way to check that your babys shoes are the right fit is by inserting your pinky finger at the back of the heel it should fit comfortably, without too much room between the foot and the shoe.

How To Make Sure The Fit Is Correct

Once you’ve tried on your new baby shoes, you will want to double-check that all that measuring paid off. Here are a few mom tested and approved ways to confirm a perfect fit:

    Visual Check

The baby shoes should appear snug and you shouldn’t see them leaving any marks on your child’s feet.

    Toe Test

From your baby’s big toe, measure to the tip of the shoe. The longest toe should be between the width of your pinkie and the width of your thumb from the tip of the shoe. Any longer than that and they might trip any less than that and they might be too snug .

This will also depend on the type of shoe, as materials vary. Moccasins are commonly made of leather and will be sturdier than say softer baby booties. The bottom line is that you want to make sure your child’s foot length isn’t restricted by their new baby shoes. If they feel too tight, they probably are !

    Test for Width

You should be able to pinch some of the material between your fingers at the widest point. If you can’t do this, then they are too tight. The great thing about soft sole shoes like baby moccasins is that they stretch to fit the width of your child’s feet. Moccs are perfect for both skinny feet and those larger babies who have what we in our family call “Flintstone Feet.”

    Pinkie Test

Slide your pinkie between your baby’s heel and the back of the shoe. Your finger should fit without extra room for the best fit.

How Do You Stretch Shoes That Are Too Small

Lets say its too late to return a small pair of shoes, or the boots you want only come in a certain size. Sometimes, the only option we have left is to stretch our shoes, which you can do using these tips below.

    • Blow dryer. This device isnt just for your hair. Put on two or three pairs of socks and put on your shoes. Then blow-dry the areas on your shoes that feel too tight. Keep the dryer on medium heat and avoid lingering on one spot too long to avoid ruining your shoes.
    • Freeze your shoes. Fill a sandwich bag with about half a cup of water. Make sure there arent any holes in the bag and place it in your shoe toward the toe area. Then put the shoes in the freezer. When water freezes, it expands, which stretches the shoes. Take it out of the freezer and let it thaw. Keep doing this until your shoe is the desired size.

How Do I Know If A Shoe Fits

Remove the footbed: place it on the floor and put your foot on top of it. You will be amazed! Why? Because it provides first indications of how well the shoe fits in length. This means that the width of the foot cannot be deduced one to one, as the interior of the shoes is usually wider than the footbed.

Check the front area: The front area is particularly important. If the footgear, in your usual size, is too tight in the front area, the instep may be insufficient. The leather usually yields slightly. But, of course, you should be able to take right off in your new shoes. There should be approximately one inch of space between your toes and the tip of your footwear.

Ball and heel: The shoe must sit firmly at the ball and heel. On the heel, you should have a minimum amount of slipping footgear that rides up and down when you walk is too large. Especially with higher heels, the heel must not wiggle, otherwise, you are in danger of tipping over. A shoe that fits, holds the foot firmly, especially in the ball area, the widest part of the foot.

Dont rely only on the toe test either squeezing the tip of the shoe to see if there is room for your childs toes. Kids tend to curl their toes when you do this, so you may get an inaccurate measurement.

Instead, grasp the front of the shoe, so your child cant move their toes. Then, check the space at the back fo the heel with your other hand, to feel if there is enough room for your childs foot to grow.

Why Does It Seem Like Baby Shoes Are Always Too Big

    Shoe sizing

When we had our first daughter, we were always surprised with how large the baby shoes we bought were. It seemed like they were always at least one size larger than advertised! After starting BirdRock Baby, and learning the ins-and-outs of the shoe business, we learned why: this is a sneaky industry trick to prevent returns.

Many companies don’t trust their customers to choose the correct size shoe, so they make all of their shoes artificially large. They figure “our sizing might not be accurate, but the child will grow into them so the parents won’t return them!”

At BirdRock Baby, we pride ourselves in running our business with honesty and transparency. It’s no fun getting a pair of shoes that isn’t the size you expected, and that’s why our shoes are true-to-size, with accurate size charts on all of our product pages.

    How To Find Your Width

Trace each of your feet on a piece of paper on a flat surface. Make sure you trace both of your feet, as your feet could vary in size, and keep the pen/pencil/marker perpendicular to the paper so you don’t trace underneath your feet.

Determine your width by using a ruler to measure the widest points of your feet. If your widths are different, use the largest measurement to determine your shoe width size.

    How To Measure Your Feet

To measure preciously, youll need a piece of white paper a bit larger than your foot, a marker pen or charcoal pencil, and a measuring tape.

  • Stand on even ground and place the white paper on the floor in front of you. In order to keep it firm and not to slide around, you can even use glue of duck tape to tape the white paper on the ground. Now put your foot on the paper and make sure to place in the middle.
  • Now use the marker pen or the pencil to trace your feet from all the way around.
  • When you are done, flip the paper over and trace the foot the same you did earlier on the other side of the paper.
  • Now its time to use the measuring tape. Place the measuring tape on your traced heel to the longest toe point to get the length on your foot. Next, now measure the width at the widest point of your foot. You can embed the numbers on the traced paper or can write them down somewhere else if you prefer.
  • Now to have a very precise measurement count, you can subtract ¼ inch or about ½ centimeter from both the length and the width to refine account the pencil outline and thin air margin while drawing the foot outline.
