Freestanding & Behind the Door Shoe Racks

If you simply have no more space in your room or closet, you can simply add a freestanding shoe rack that you can move around as needed, or get one of those shoe racks that can be connected to the back of your door. The closet door racks are able to hold many pairs of shoes, but just make sure that your door hardware and material is sturdy!

This behind the door shoe rack simply hangs on the top rail of the door and runs the whole height of the door, allowing you to use the space for shoe storage. If youd like to use something similar, do check your clearances and make sure it doesnt hit anything or any wall.

Repurpose An Attic Space

If you have an attic space that isn’t getting much love, consider transforming it into a stunning walk-in closet or dressing room. This beautiful space is the perfect place to store all of those shoes you’ve been hoarding for years.

While built-ins are ideal, you can replicate this look with well-placed bookshelves throughout the space.

Assess Whether You Need A Separate Shoe Storage Solution Or Not

Some people collect shoes the same way grandmas supposedly collect Christmas sweaters. Maybe youre one of those people. If you are, then you know that telling shoe enthusiasts they need to pare down their stash isnt going to do anything.

But since closets have limited storage space, think about whether you realistically need to invest in a separate storage solution for shoes.

Things take up the space they take, says Laura Cattano, a professional organizer in Brooklyn, New York. My advice would be to get a bookcase with adjustable shelves. Even an IKEA one.

Speaking of IKEA, the Finnby, Hemnes;, and Brimnes bookcases are all adjustable, and all welcome your wedges.

These handy little slots make it easy to see all your shoes at a glance, and even come in two different sizes, to better accommodate heels and booties. Pro tip: Organize each row by style and put the shoes you reach for most often in the top cubbies, for easy access. Special occasion and out of season shoes can then take up the boxes closer to the floor. Stack them vertically if you dont have a ton of spare floor space, or line them in a low row as a sort of border against a wall.

The Container Store Large Drop

Kelly McGreevy, founder of Boston-based home organization company Styled Neatly, favors this set of shoe boxes that make organization a breeze. Part of the appeal of a box like this one is practicality since they allow you to be able to see all your shoes easily and always have a spot to return them to, she added. The brand doesnt recommend stacking more than 7 or 8 of the boxes on top of each other for stability. The set has earned an average 4.3-star rating over more than 200 reviews at The Container Store.

Assess The Role Of Shoes In Your Life And Use That As A Guide

If shoes are your thing, if they make you excited to get up and get dressed in the morning, use them as decor, offers Lisa Ruff, of luxury home organizing company NEAT Method. Ruff suggests using a bookcase or open shelving in order to show off your shoe collection as part of your home. Yatrofsky has had clients convert an old dresser into a shoe display by pulling out the drawers.

The thought of moving my books out of sight in order to display my shoes made me sad, so I took that gut reaction as a sign that my shoes needed to remain in my closet. Out of necessity, the dining bench/shoe rack had to stay, but I resolved to make it an aesthetically uniform display rather than a place to shove my workout shoes before rushing out the door. I followed Yatrofskys instructions to create a capsule collection of shoes consisting of three or four pairs of shoes that I wear all the time and gave them what Ruff called prime real estate, an area easy for me to see and reach, on the bench.

How To Decide What Shoe Storage Solution To Buy

Before buying any kind of shoe storage, you should first make sure you actually want to keep certain pairs of shoes around, said McGreevy. She recommended putting similar shoes side by side and sorting through each group, letting go of any pairs you dont need anymore. Going through this step is important so that you dont end up organizing extra pairs of shoes or buying more storage than you need, she said. Count how many pairs you have after decluttering and purchase storage based on those numbers.

Beyond the total tally of shoes you own, the type of shoe organizer you finally go for could also depend on what the size of your space is and how often you wear your shoes, McGreevy told us. The frequency at which you wear your favorite pairs is especially important when searching for shoe storage, according to Solomon. It may not make sense to tuck away shoes in individual storage bins if you like to get more mileage out of all your shoes instead, opt for open storage like a shoe cubby or shoe rack that allow for easy access, Solomon suggested. And an over-the-door shoe bag could work for some who dont need their collection in plain sight, plus frees up floor space, she added.

Shoe organizers that hang over the closet door can be lifesavers particularly for lightweight, casual shoes since you can bunch an entire pair into one slot.

But if you have a sliding closet door, or just dont have the space for the standard 24-pocket organizer, Lowenheim recommends a slim vertical organizer that ties over the closet rod, like this Target find;.

You can fit a pair of shoes in each slot, and there are 10 slots. You can get two and those should see you through your day-to-day shoes, she says. If youre considering more than 20 pairs of shoes each day, you have too many shoes.

    Make Shoe Storage A Habit

Unfortunately, theres no magic solution to getting your shoes back where they belong without putting them there yourself, says Tova. In an effort to be a little bit more, bear with me, mindful about tidying my home, Ive been taking a minute before heading out the door each morning to make sure any shoes not on my feet are stored away. Though this is a tiny change, it feels good to not be greeted by a pile of shoes at my front door when I return home.

Ruff adds that if you live with someone else, like a roommate or a spouse, you should designate an area of shoe storage specifically for them, even if its just a shelf on a shoe rack. Things will generally stay cleaner if each person maintains responsibility for a manageable area.

Though Im less than a week into this new shoe-tine , it feels good to be treating my shoes well, lifting them up off the floor and freeing them from the dark confines of my closet corners. I know it might sound a bit woo-woo, but this whole process made me realize that what bothered me most about my messy shoe situation was that I felt like I wasnt treating these possessions in a way that reflected how much I cherish them. As Yanofsky said to me: Your shoes support you, they bring you through your day. How do you show respect to them?

Im pretty sure my shoes arent sentient, but just in case they are, Id rather we live in harmony.

Pick A Storage System That Suits Your Shoes And Your Space

Im guilty of practicing an age-old philosophy known as Ye Olde Tactic of Cramming Things Back in the Closet. Often I end up stashing shoes out of my own sight and subsequently toss them out of my mind too. In order to combat this, Ruff urged me to store shoes where I can actually see them.

Tidy Tova, a professional organizer whos worked her wizardry on the homes of Harling and Gyan, advises every single one of her clients to buy a shoe rack. If youre working with a large collection of shoes, both Tova and Ruff recommend storing them in rolling drawers under your bed. If you have a bit of space to spare in your closet, you can use clear boxes to store each pair of shoes individually. Ruff adds that multiple pairs of flat sandals or sneakers can be stored in the same bin if theyre filed vertically.

I find that Im more inclined to keep my stuff neat if I like the look of whatevers storing it.

I already store clothing under my bed, so I ordered a shoe rack for my closet. I opted to spend a bit more than I needed to on this option that matches the other white furniture in my home. I find that Im more inclined to keep my stuff neat if I like the look of whatevers storing it. Plus, $34.99 isnt a terrible price to pay to treat my beloved shoes right, even if no one will really see this rack but me.

Wake All Your Shoes Up Then Kick Some Of Them Out

This first step comes courtesy of Jessica Yatrofsky, founder of SjD Consulting, who is certified in the KonMari method and offers beautiful, minimal organizational services for hire. To start, Yatrofsky suggests pulling out all of your shoes and laying them out in the center of the room. In keeping with the philosophies of Marie Kondo, she suggests physically touching each pair and clapping or playing chimes to wake them up if they havent been worn in a while. .

Once all your shoes are laid out, youll have a clear picture of just how many pairs you own. I was surprised to find that I have 23that seems like a lot! But Yatrofsky assured me this number still places me firmly in the minimalist category . Laying them out like this will also better equip you for the editing process, which, according to every organizational expert I spoke, is one of the most important parts of shoe tidying.

As a rule of thumb, I give myself permission to have a maximum of one vanity pair of shoes in my closet at a time.
