But the story reminded both of us that we’d put a pin in a future discussion of how to clean knit sneakers, specifically. We’ve covered general sneaker care in this space, as well as instructions on how one might go about cleaning a pair of kicks in the washing machine, but there are definitely some specialty topics we should address. And we’ll do so over the course of the next few months, so if you’ve got questions about cleaning sneakers that require special care, hit me at with those queries.

Clean Them While Theyre Dry
If your sneakers have picked up dirt and dust while on the road or the trail, you can try cleaning them without wetting them. This technique wont work for liquid stains, such as ketchup or coffee, but it might freshen them up quickly between uses if they have just picked up some environmental residue.
You dont want to scrub so hard that you make the material fray. Therefore, use a soft brush and a gentle touch. You should take this step to remove loose dirt particles before washing your shoes with anything else.

How To Wash Shoes In Your Washer A Step
Washing shoes in a washing machine isnt difficult, but it does take some preparation. Before you get started, check the care and cleaning instructions for your shoes to ensure theyre washer/dryer safe. Next, make sure you have the following tools and materials on hand:
Mesh garment bags
A soft brush, like an old toothbrush
A cream cleaner
Once you have all of your materials together, you can begin cleaning your shoes using the steps below.
Step 1: First, remove the laces and/or insoles from your shoes.
Step 2: Your shoelaces can be washed in the washing machine, as long as you put them into a mesh garment bag that is zippered or secured shut. This will keep your laces from getting tangled up in the washing machine or wrapping around moving parts. If your laces are especially dirty, you can clean them manually with laundry detergent and a soft brush.
Step 4: If your shoes have excess mud or debris in the soles, use a soft brush to remove as much as possible. You can also use a toothbrush or toothpicks to carefully remove debris from tight areas. Once the dirt is removed, you can also clean away scuff marks by using a rag or soft brush to apply a shoe cleaner. Gently rub the cleaner onto the scuffs, then wipe away with a damp rag.
Step 5: After cleaning the soles, place your shoes in a mesh garment bag to keep them from banging around in your washer.

How To Dry Running Shoes
Asics. Never place them near direct heat, as this will alter the shape of the shoe. Instead, stuff the inside with paper towels to absorb the dampness. It should take 12 hours to dry.
Brooks. Stuff shoes with plain newsprint and allow them to air dry.
Minuzo. Place them in direct sunlight for an hour or so. If you cant, use a fan.
Nike. Always allow to air dry.
Skechers. Always allow performance shoes to air dry naturally.
How Many Pairs Of Marathon Shoes Should You Buy
If youre in training mode for a full marathon, there are a couple of options to consider.
One, consider buying 2 pairs of the same shoe. .
Two, have one shoe for daily miles and the other shoe for faster speed or tempo days.
Running shoes gradually lose their support and bounce. You should look to change out a pair of running shoes every 300 500 miles.
At the same time, running shoes need to be broken in. A brand-new pair of running shoes need a few miles on them before they are race-ready.
So for your marathon shoes, you want to be like Goldilocks dont run in brand new shoes, but dont use old, tired shoes either. They need to be just right.
When it comes to marathon preparation, heres how I like to do it:
I buy two identical pairs of running shoes.

Then I wear my first pair for almost all of my training by the time the marathon comes, they are a little worn and dull.
As for the second pair , I save them until around 4 to 5 weeks before the marathon, then introduce them into the mix. Ill alternate the 2 pairs until the marathon shoes have around 50 miles in them. Then theyre ready.
The same mentality can be used for your faster shoe or the shoe you will use on race day.
You will want to do almost all your base and major training in the first pair and alternate in using the faster shoe on your speed and tempo days.
I like to start using this shoe for my long runs about 4 to 6 weeks out from my race.

Now that we’re in the midst of Spring cleaning everything possible, it’s time to set our sights on our running shoes.
It’s important to note that although the washing machine may be an alluring avenue, the regular cycle is typically not gentle enough for performance footwear, and can damage if not destroy your expensive and well-loved shoes.
If your shoes are machine-washable, make sure you put your shoes in some kind of encasing for added protection, like a shoe bag, washable laundry bag, or pillow case. Use a gentle cycle and cold water, wash with deodorizing pellets or sport-specific laundry detergent, and let them air dry.
Here are some options on getting your sneaks squeaky clean:
Tip: Never leave damp shoes inside, or enclosed for too long. It builds mildew, mold, and icky smells.

How To Clean Running Shoes

- An old toothbrush or an old vegetable brushsoft bristles are the key.
- A hose or utility sink.
- For uppers: a mild soap or, if the shoes have Gore-Tex® or another waterproof/breathable membrane, use a specialized footwear cleaner because soap or detergent additives can gum things up.

The baby powder absorbs your sweat and helps reduce that awful smell! Baking soda has the same effect. Sprinkle about half a teaspoon of either into each shoe while you let them sit.

What To Look For In Marathon Running Shoes
As I detailed in my article How To Choose Running Shoes,the number one factor when trying out marathon running shoes is simply comfort.
It almost sounds too simple, but its true.
Any shoe you dont find comfortable when trying on is not going to get any more comfortable once youre out running with them.
And sometimes you can only discover that a pair of shoes are uncomfortable after running around in them for several miles.
Here are some more pointers for what to look for to find the best marathon shoes for you:
- You want a thumb space between the longest toe and the shoe box. This avoids the repetitive motion of the toe hitting the toebox, which leads to sore toes/runners toe. At the same time, if the shoe is too big your foot will move inside it and your toes will strike the toebox which could lead to blisters or other unwanted issues.
- Pick shoes that suit the terrain of the marathon. Trail marathons have very different underfoot conditions to road marathons. (And dont forget to train in the same environment as you are running!
- Seek advice from a reputable running store. Avoid stores where the assistants arent runners themselves and make sure they are analyzing your gait in the shoe. Having someone look at your movement in the shoe from a different angle is key!
- Stick to what has worked. If you have a brand or model youre familiar with, theres often no need to even change your marathon training shoe. If it isnt broken, dont fix it!
