The Best Adidas Running Shoes Of 2022

Profeet review the new Adidas Ultra Boost Running Shoe

ADIDAS is a worldwide German brand, especially recognized for their BOOST-midsole. Get the list of the best running shoes from ADIDAS here!

ADIDAS are among the top manufaturers af shoes and sports equipment and in this article you get a list of the best ADIDAS-running shoes in the current market. It all began in the German city Herzogenaurach in 1924 under the name Gebrüder Dassler Schuhfabrik, when the two brothers Adolf and Rudolf Dassler started producing sports shoes.

A family feud in 1947 tore the brothers apart and Rudolf Dassler followingly launched PUMA, while Adolf Dassler founded ADIDAS a year later. The headquarters of both companies are based in Herzogenaurach, where Adolf and Rudolf grew up.

Since then ADIDAS have developed into one of the biggest brands in the world.

ADIDAS are especially recogninzed for their groundbreaking BOOST-cushioning which provide amazing cushioning and return energy. Over the last years, the ADIDAS development of new running shoes has reached new heights.

Here you will get a quick presentation of the best 6 ADIDAS running shoes available right now.

Adidas Ultraboost 21 Conclusion

I dont mind heavy shoes for easy runs because it makes it easier to run fast when you switch to a lighter shoe for tempo days.

The problem with the Ultraboost 21 is that the heavy Boost midsole makes the shoe bottom heavy so there is lots of heel lift because of the loose heel.

Like a car with a powerful turbo engine that has no seatbelt, I felt as if the midsole wanted me to run faster but the upper was preventing me from doing so, leading to very frustrating runs.

Theres the issue of the price as well. $180 is a crazy price for a max-cushioned trainer that should be priced $30 lower, the same as the Triumph, Glycerin and Nimbus.

For $180 you can even get a Hoka carbon fibre racer that can double up as a training shoe.

With the firmer Boost foam and the harder crystal rubber outsole, you dont get the plush, step-in comfort that made previous Ultraboosts so comfortable.

I cant really recommend the Ultraboost 21 to anyone unless you want a good-looking casual shoe to wear to the mall that you can do an occasional short run in.

The Ultraboost 21 is still very much a lifestyle sneaker and not a serious, performance running shoe.

We purchased a pair of Adidas Ultraboost 21 from runningwarehouse using our own money. This did not influence the outcome of this review, written after running more than 50 miles in them.

Adidas Boost Running Shoes

Adidas is a popular shoe brand renowned especially for its Boost technology that was introduced in 2013. Over the past years, the Boost foam has set a new standard in the shoe industry and is now featured in over 20 Adidas running shoes.

Built with premium materials and state-of-the-art technologies, the Adidas Boost running shoes are designed to provide long-lasting comfort and performance. They are ideal for all types of runners with different levels and abilities.

I dont think the Ultraboost will ever be a true performance trainer while it still has a bootie construction.

The problem with bootie constructions is that it makes it impossible to implement double last row eyelets so heel lock lacing cant be done.

The upper of the Ultraboost reminds me of the first version of the React Infinity Run Flyknit: both have loose heels resulting in subpar foot lockdown.

Nike fixed the problem in the second version of the React Infinity Run Flyknit by changing the bootie construction and the shoe improved tenfold. Will Adidas do the same with the Ultraboost 22? Its unlikely.

The Primeknit+ upper on the Ultraboost feels very soft, smooth and comfortable but its a bit on the warm side as breathability is not great.

The plastic cage makes a comeback and is not as intrusive. Its not a full plastic cage like on versions 1-3 because the cage is not connected to the midsole.

There is a 0.5mm gap between the cage and the midsole while the cage is stitched on.

The cage didnt bother me at all and I found midfoot lockdown to be good. I found the overall fit true to size but the loose heel was the big weakness.

Adidas Ultraboost Shoes Redefine Your Run

Adidas Solar Boost 19

The adidas Ultraboost was designed with one goal in mind: to be the best running shoe ever made. Even for the sportswear giant, this was an ambitious goal. But by combining key technology like a Boost midsole, Primeknit upper, and their patented Torsion Bar, adidas created a responsive running shoe that changed the game.

I like the ride of the Ultraboost 22 more than the Ultraboost 21 because its softer. The Ultraboost is supposed to be a max-cushioned trainer and the plushest, most cushioned Adidas running shoe. Version 22 is a much better max-cushioned trainer.

The Ultraboost 21 and 22 have exactly the same midsole and outsole but the big difference which influences the ride is the strobel lasting directly underneath the insole, above the midsole.

The Ultraboost 21 had a thick, lattice lasting with small rectangular cutouts while the Ultraboost 22 has a thinner lasting with a large, oval cutout in the heel, and a large, oval cutout under the ball of the foot.

The large cutouts in the Ultraboost 22 allow the Boost to expand more under your heel and forefoot so it feels more squishy and more comfortable for long-distance runs. I did a 40 km run in the Ultraboost 22 and my feet felt well protected and fresh throughout the run.

The only problem with Boost foam is that its heavy and dense so it limits the Ultraboost 22s versatility. I found it only useful for easy or recovery runs above 5.30 per kilometre so its a good shoe to stop you from running too fast.

One of the Ultraboost 22s strengths is how stable it is. Theres very little lean bias because the midsole doesnt compress much and the deep heel cups your rearfoot. It also has a wide, stable base.

Are Adidas Ultra Boost Good For Running

The Adidas Ultra Boost, established in 2015, was a significant evolution of the Boost. The ARAMIS motion capture technology formerly utilized by NASA to check the anatomical integrity of their space shuttles was used to develop this shoe. The technology helped the Adidas Innovation Team access the tension and strain on the various parts of the runners foot up to the submicrometer level. The new way of analyzing performance resulted in the Ultra Boosts iconic figure: the heel-to-toe boost, divide lace cage, and the Primeknit upper.

The new Ultraboost upper is one of the most comfortable of any running shoe for casual wear. There are some cosmetic updates to the upper of the Ultraboost 22 but there is only one major update that affects the fit.

The biggest and most important update is to the heel counter. There is now more padding on the inside of the heel and the heel is angled more toward the achilles. This results in a more secure heel lockdown with only a small amount of heel slippage. There are still no double eyelets so you cant use a runners knot.

The plastic midfoot panels have also been updated. The corners of the panels around the first eyelets are not as pointy as on version 21. The first row of eyelets are now large, circular ones while the last eyelets have speed loop straps for the laces to pass through. This change improves the lacing slightly.

The stretchy mesh design is different to the Ultraboost 21. There arent as many perforations for ventilation on the midfoot and on the toe box so the Ultraboost 22 runs slightly warmer than the last version.

The fit is still true to size and more suited to narrow feet than wide feet. Its not available in additional widths like most Adidas trainers.

Adidas Ultra Boost Uncaged test & review – A versatile running shoe

Ahhhhh.Boost midsole material. What a wonderful thing for those indoctrinated runners willing to spend an extra thirty dollars or so to experience a fantastic ride that will last upwards of 700 miles in many cases .

However, can there be too much a good thing? While testing the Adidas Ultra Boost I found their claim of designing the best running shoe ever to be inflated and almost laughable at times.

One has to wonder, Who wear-tested this shoe?, and Do the designers even run?

Adidas released the Ultra Boost as a possible replacement for the only slightly more affordable Energy Boost which has gained popularity over the years.

The Energy Boost works great as a high mileage trainer due to the fact that the Boost Midsole is bolstered on top by a harder EVA foam which reduces the unstable feel of so much Boost material.

While the Boost midsole is absolutely fantastic, most Adidas running shoes apply it sparingly throughout the midsole to produce a firm and responsive cushioning that almost seems to improve with age.

With the Ultra Boost Adidas piles on a whopping 27mm of Boost midsole which is unsupported by any material of a higher durometer.

The effect is a fairly sloppy feel which Adidas tries to mitigate by placing a very shallow primeknit upper and essentially a plastic cage around the mid-foot and heel of the shoe.

Adidas uses a thin layer of Continental tire rubber on the outsole of the shoe to increase grip and to protect the Boost midsole.

How We Chose These Shoes

Our team of over 350 wear testers includes runners of all ages and speeds living both locally near our Pennsylvania headquarters and across the U.S. Between our testers and Runners World staff, weve run in many of the Adidas models below. And for those that we havent personally laced up, we rely on our research, consultation with brand reps, user feedback and reviews, and our own extensive experience with both running and the running shoe industry. We also check data from our RW Shoe Lab, where weve tested and re-tested the energy return of Boost foam, measured the flexibility of Adidass stabilizing Torsion System, and assessed the traction of its Continental rubber outsoles. Regardless of which shoe you choose, rest assured that weve thoroughly scrutinized the current Adidas lineup and found the best.

Adidas Ultraboost 22 First Impressions

picture of Adidas Ultraboost 22

The first time I saw pictures of the Ultraboost 22, I struggled to find any differences to the last version apart from the new colourways. The midsole and outsole looked exactly the same while there were subtle changes to the toe box and the eye stays upon closer inspection.

My first run was a 12 km easy run which was surprisingly enjoyable. There were some differences to the Ultraboost 21 which I picked up immediately.

The biggest and most notable difference was that the Ultraboost 22 felt softer and more cushioned. Its not the softest of all the Ultraboosts but its definitely not as firm as the Ultraboost 21.

The other difference that I noted was that the heel lockdown felt slightly better. It still wasnt secure by any stretch of the imagination but it wasnt as bad as the last version.

Transitions were smooth but slow and it was difficult to pick up the pace to run below 5.30 per kilometre but I enjoyed the first run of the Ultraboost 22 much more than the first run of the Adidas Adistar which I tested last month.

Adidas Ultraboost 22 Conclusion

picture of Adidas Ultraboost 22

The Ultraboost 22, just like the Ultraboost 21 is still seen by most serious runners as a casual, lifestyle trainer. This is mainly because of its near 12 oz weight and its stretchy, knitted upper.

It can still work in a shoe rotation as an easy day or recovery trainer if you dont mind a heavy shoe- just dont expect much assistance from the Ultraboost 22 to go faster than 5.30 per km pace.

The big elephant in the room when it comes to the Ultraboost 22 is its price. Theres no reason that the Ultraboost 22 should warrant costing $190. Its much more expensive than the Nimbus 24, Glycerin 20, Triumph 19 and Infinity Run 2.

These 4 max-cushioned trainers are softer, lighter and more versatile than the Ultraboost 22 but where the Ultraboost 22 beats them all is durability. Its built like a tank and has the ability to last over 3000 kilometres .

The Ultraboost 22 is definitely an upgrade over the Ultraboost 21. The heel lockdown is slightly better and it has a softer ride thanks to the Strobel lining change so its a better max-cushioned trainer.

What One Tester Said

Robin L. | Tester since 2017Arch: Medium | Gait: Overpronator | Footstrike: Heel

I had been running in Adidas Solar Glide, but the Supernova far outweighs it in so many ways. The Supernova feels much lighter and more flexible, but still provides the needed stability. It also manages heat better on hot days. The toe box on the Supernova hugs your foot thanks to the comfortable material, compared to a wider and stiffer feel of the Solar Glide. The main feature I love about the Supernova is the comfort of the material and the stability the shoe provides when Im running at my training pace .
