Visual Check

• Let them move: Once your child is wearing both shoes, let them do a strut around the shop. Watch how they walk and see if the shoe provides support, or looks uncomfortable. Then ask your child how they feel be specific ask if they feel tight or too loose.

How Do I Retrieve Your Childs Exact Foot Length And Foot Shape

I have been measuring childrens feet and helping them find the correct pair of shoes for their feet for the last 10 years. I work for a specialized childrens shoe store that focuses in children with complicated foot shapes as well as foot conditions such as flat feet, rolled ankles, low muscle tone, toe walking, etc.

At the shoe store that I work for I handle approximately 100 shoe fittings/try ons per week, so I will be able to easily tell you your childs exact foot shape.

I will input your childs foot length measurements in the Brannock device to accurately determine your childs exact foot length. The Brannock device is the standard foot measuring tool, and the most effective tool on the market right now.

I understand that not all families can afford to invest $50in a foot measuring device. In order to support families who may not have this device, I offer my personal assistance in applying my method which involves 2 simple steps.

The main downside of the Brannock Device is that it wont retrieve your childs exact foot width and whether your child has a high instep or not. This is something that comes with experience.

There have been several inventions and online tools that claim to provide you with the most accurate foot size. Please dont waste any money on those tools. These tools are ineffective because they are not able to capture two key factors that determine the final foot size: instep and width.

Common Shoe Sizing Mistakes To Avoid

If you follow the tips above, and make sure to use a size chart from the brand you’re shopping with, you shouldn’t have any problems selecting the perfect size shoes for your baby’s feet. Here are a few “gotchas” to make sure to avoid…

Hand-me-downs

Try to avoid hand-me-downs while your little one is still mastering motor skills. Shoes mold to the child’s foot through use, and hand-me-down shoes will be molded to the original wearer’s foot. This could cause irritation in places where the shoe rubs against the foot, and might even cause them to shift their weight incorrectly while walking.

Keeping an eye on foot size

They grow up so fast, and in the blink of an eye they will need to size-up about every 3-4 months. Monitor that growth with regular checks every couple months to make sure they don’t start to outgrow the shoes. It helps to set a reminder on your phone so you remember to check.

If your little starts taking shoes off, hobbling around, or rubbing their feet, those are late signs that they’ve outgrown their shoes and need a new pair quickly!

Go big!

If you have done all the calculations and find your baby between sizes, go with the larger size. A little extra room to grow is a good thing.

How Much Room Should Children Have In A Shoe

Your childs neon-colored Adidas or Nike sneakers and sparkly Stride Rite Mary Jane shoes may look snazzy but do they actually fit?

If your childs shoes leave less than half an inch of space for the feet, it is time to buy new shoes.

New shoes, on the other hand, should leave at least 3/4 inch of free space for the feet to move.

Measure The Width Of Each Foot

Next, measure the width of each foot. Again, do each foot individually as each foot can differ in size. Wrap the tape from joint of big toe, to the joint of smallest toe , gently pull until it is snug, and take the reading from there. Again, if the childs foot is between sizes, go for the bigger size.
