Since the acquisition, youd think Kelley would be off surfing exotic waves.
While he has managed to buy a beach house in Del Mar that hes refitted with items like lamps made from surfboards, chairs designed by acupuncturists and a stainless-steel shark that hangs from the roof, Kelley is still designing.
I am working hard to help Deckers understand Sanuks vision, said Kelley, who still oversees the brand direction and design for Sanuk. Weve spread our message of fun domestically. The whole idea now is to take that message of fun and take it global.

Deckers trades as Ugg Holdings, Inc. in Australia, where it is known for a trademark dispute over the use of the widely used term “ugg boots“.

Deckers owned Sanuk, the California shoe brand most known for its easy going slide ons, has launched a shoe made with Yulexa natural rubber coming from FSC-certified forests in Guatemala.
First launched by Patagonia in wetsuits, the same material is relevant in shoes. The Chiba Journey LX are meant to be worn on rocky shores, up mountains, and even in the water. Designed in tandem with Ramon Navarro, a surfer and eco-warrior out of Chile, who had expressed the need for a more rugged shoe from Sanuk, able to take on rougher terrain, the Chiba Journey LX uses the same materials as those found in Patagonia swimsuits. This all-weather sturdy, slip in design doesnt scream eco-friendly from any angle.
Using Yulex in the outsole as well as recycled materials throughout, the Chiba is part of Sanuks broader vision to incorporate more bio-based materials in their shoes and ultimately design a shoe with more than 50 percent recycled content.
Katie Pruitt, Senior Manager of Product Development, notes that this particular design took over two years to come together and involved experimenting with a variety of materials from soy-based to algae and sugarcane-based as alternatives for the standard petrochemical options. Its about matching sustainability with performance, and trying to do that as much as possible with natural alternatives.

Sanuk Cozy Vibes Low And Slipper
Sanuk has plenty to offer if youre interested in both comfort and sustainability. This fall, the brand will release its Cozy Vibes collection , which includes the Cozy Vibes Low and the Cozy Vibes Slipper for men and women. As Sanuk prepares to celebrate 25 years in business next year, GM Erik Ecklund answers some questions for us about the brands challenges and how the team is working to turn things around.
According to Deckers, Sanuks annual revenue fell 18% to $41.8 million in the companys recently ended fiscal year.
Sanuk GM Erik Ecklund: Ill answer your question in two parts, starting with the financial results in our most recent fiscal year ending March 31, 2021. Our decline over this last fiscal year was unexpected and driven by the COVID-19 pandemic. During our scenario planning in March of 2020, while faced with widespread retail closures and many uncertainties, we planned our business down and restructured to pandemic proof the brand. As a result of swift decision making and efficient inventory planning, we managed to exceed our COVID revenue targets, maintain strong profitability and grow our e-commerce business by over 40%.
I heard that Sanuk has recently been moved to a new operating structure. Is that true, and if so, how does that work?

His a-ha moment with Sanuk, came, though, after surfing.
Early one morning in 2006, Kelley ran the Swamis stairs in his New Balance running shoes. That afternoon, he returned to surf, rerunning those same stairs with surfboard in hand, but this time barefoot.
The efficiency of being able to use all the muscles in my feet as opposed to isolating them in shoes was night and day, said Kelley. It was so much more comfortable on my entire body.
Going back to his garage once again, he took a deconstructed shoe upper and built it over a sandal footbed, the same effect as having a comfortable mattress put directly on the floor rather than over a hard piece of wood.
The result, the Sidewalk Surfer, a shoe that not only fits like a sandal, but also hangs on the wall at retail, is now Sanuks best-selling product and retails for about $65. Its other sandals average around $35.
The product has created a whole new category for footwear manufacturers, and its also one of the key styles that helped Sanuk get noticed by Deckers.
