Even The Best Counterfeit Sneakers Have Their Tells A Pair Of Fake Air Jordans Might Use The Wrong Color Stitching Or Weigh An Ounce Too Much Or Too Little Sometimes There’s A Different Scent
“When you smell a Nike factory shoe, it has that distinct factory smell. And when you smell a fake Nike, it has that fake artificial smell,” said Eddy Lu. “If you’ve smelled enough sneakers, you know that smell.”
Lu has smelled a lot of shoes. He is the co-founder of GOAT, a marketplace for selling and buying sneakers. Launched in 2015, the startup’s goal is to make it easier to find and bid on shoes online, and harder to be duped by counterfeits. It uses image recognition and human inspectors to screen for fake shoes
Sneakers are a big business. Athletic footwear was a $17.5 billion industry in 2016, and resales are estimated to make up $1 billion of that market.
Secondary sales are driven by the shoe-loving subculture of “sneakerheads.” Decades after Nike released its first Air Jordans, people still lineup outside of boutique shoe stores for hours to buy the latest limited edition sneakers.
They sell and trade the collectable shoes through eBay and Craigslist, on social media like Facebook and Instagram, and in real life at consignment shops or conventions like SneakerCon.
GOAT’s co-founder Daishin Sugano came up with the idea for GOAT after getting stuck with a pair of fakes from eBay. He and Lu thought there could be a better way.
“The reason marketplaces sometimes suck is all the dirty work we’re going to handle,” said Lu.
Paid Close To $400 For A Pair Of Shoes That Are Too Big
Paid close to $400 for a pair of shoes. Ended up being the wrong size so I sent them back in the EXACT same condition we received them. Was later told that they had scuff marks, hair, markings and were tried on so they would not refund my money. This is not very comforting knowing they sent me these shoes in the very same condition without taking a bit of notice and did not mind at all sending them to me this way. All my options were at this point was to sell or have shoe returned to me. Could not get any help with selling the shoes or the process and now stuck with a pair of shoes that can not be used. Waste of $400! Never again…

Are Goat Shoes Real And Authentic
The initial purpose of the Goat app is not only to buy shoes online but to guarantee the real deal. Goat offers buyers and sellers of sneakers an authenticity guarantee using a ship to verify model. Goat is more than just the middleman. They take the time to verify shoes to prevent the sale of counterfeits.
From Fake Air Jordans To A Trusted Reseller
College friends Eddy Lu and Daishin Sugano, a developer and designer, were serial entrepreneurs who had quit their corporate job to pursue ideas. They developed high-cost, low-quality apps when the iPhone came out and failed a few times.
In 2013, Sugano purchased a pair of Air Jordan 5 Grapes from eBay, which turned out to be fake. That is when sneaker enthusiasts Lu and Sugano identified a lucrative market for secondary sneaker brands.
The rise in counterfeit sneakers available created significant problems for brands, an issue that Lu and Sugano could solve through GOAT.
Two years later, in 2015, they founded GOAT to build a trusted marketplace for authentic sneakers.

Order Canceled With No Sensible Explanation
I was a first time customer. I was looking to replace a particular pair of discontinued running sneakers with the exact same model and size. I found a brand new pair on GOAT.com which was my size and a good price. It was the only pair in the size and color I wanted. I purchased them and the seller sent the sneakers to GOAT for evaluation prior to GOAT sending to me. GOAT notified me that the box was very damaged but the sneakers were okay. If I wanted to go through with the order the seller would give me 5% off. If not, my money would be fully refunded. I chose the discount and I saw the 5% refund on my credit card and quickly got a notification from UPS that the shipping label was created. Within a couple of days, my order was spontaneously canceled. When I reached out to customer support, it took several days for them to get back to me but I was told the sneakers were “mis-verified”. I don’t know what that means and when I asked them this they told me they don’t know how it was mis-verified because the order was canceled. These sneakers are back up on their website available for 2.5 times the amount I initially paid! Seems like a scam to me!
How Does Goat Work For Sellers
Its actually easier than on eBay. Click on the tab with the price tag and you will have the option Sell Your Sneakers. All you need to do then is look up the SKU or model number for the shoes that you want to sell.

How Does It Work
Goat was co founded by creator Eddy Lu, who launched the startup in 2015 with the goal of making it easier to bid on shoes without the risk of being duped into purchasing counterfeits or fake shoes. The website uses actual human inspectors and image recognition to sell and trade collectible shoes.
As a consumer, you can sell or buy your sneakers on Goat.com. Last year, sellers made over $2 million from the app, making it a good way for people to clean out their closets and upgrade their style. As a seller, Goat removes many of the concerns over unwittingly reselling fraudulent products. The screening program utilized by Goat offers users a reliable way to buy and sell their shoes.
In order to list your shoes, a seller must send in seven photos, each of which must match a list of requirements. Goat will then determine whether they are real and safe to list, using a database of real and fake versions to figure out the legitimacy of the shoes.& nbsp
As a seller, you can bid on shoes just as you might on eBay. The seller then ships the shoes to Goats headquarters, where they are inspected carefully for damage and authenticity. You can find or sell just about any kind of shoes at below retail price on Goat.com, with top brands including Yeezy, Gucci, and Air Jordan.
Is Goat Legit And Safe To Use
Right off the bat, GOAT is a legit site, and the chance of getting scammed is incredibly low. The team behind the app assures users theyre doing everything in their power to verify the authenticity of items sold through their platform.
But GOAT is a marketplace, which means any verified sellers can market their shoes through the app. So, how exactly does GOAT do quality control?
From its early stages, GOAT has employed a ship-to-verify model. In short, when someone buys a pair of sneakers from a vendor, those dont get shipped to the buyer.
Instead, the sneakers ship to GOATs team first. GOATs team of experienced sneaker specialists examine each item, ensuring they are authentic and in the condition promised by the seller.
Then, the sneakers get shipped to the buyer with GOATs guarantee of authenticity. They also have a money-back guarantee if they make an inaccurate determination.
Moreover, GOAT has an AI-assisted process to spot fakes before they even get to the experts. With thousands of unique styles and models in their warehouse at any given time, its hard to get to each one in time.
Using an expert-trained AI image recognition system, theyre able to screen out fakes instantly. The system is trained with a massive list of signals that can trigger fraud detection.
Ultimately, GOAT acts as an expert middleman between buyers and sellers to verify the authenticity of their products. And, they do that very well as theyre in the top 100 selling apps.

My Son Sold A Pair Of Shoes On Goat And
My son sold a pair of shoes on Goat and was to receive $135. Goat tried to deposit the money into a closed account, the bank kicked it back and Goat will not give him his money even though the shoes have gone on to the buyer. No one will get back to my son and they have claimed the money is at the bank but it is not. We know our bank personally and they said they kick it back. So they basically stole my kids shoes. You can not trust Goat to do things right.

How Can U Tell If Nikes Are Fake
One of the most obvious signs of fake Nikes is an unbelievably low price tag. If the shoes seem ridiculously low-priced, theyre most likely not authentic. However, this does not mean that all discounted Nikes are fakes. You should be suspicious if the marked down price is less than 50 percent of the original price.

Is Goat A Reliable Sneaker Trading Platform
The rise of e-commerce platforms has contributed to the growth of counterfeit goods, making it difficult to find legit online selling sites and platforms.
GOAT, which is a nod to the sports term for Greatest of All Time, is one of the most reliable platforms for buying and selling sneakers today.
Launched in 2015, GOAT was founded by college friends Eddy Lu and Daishin Sugano. The idea of a sneaker buy-and-sell app came after Daishin bought a retro pair of Air Jordan 5 Grapes, which turned out to be fake.
Scottie Pippens first official signature shoe, the Air Pippen, in the OG black and Varsity Red colorway, retails for $378,073
As a self-confessed sneakerhead, Daishin was left disappointed, more so because he was not able to get his money back due to eBays poor policy.
It became apparent that the industry I loved was fragmented and unsafe. Many people buying sneakers were running into the same problems. There are entire subreddits, social accounts, and blogs built around how to spot fakes.
We knew we could use technology to solve many of the existing problems and with the knowledge we already had in the space, we would have an additional edge. We also decided it was important for us to find an industry that serves a passionate and youthful generation.
After talking with Eddy about his experience, the two decided to build the app with an aim to become the worlds most trusted marketplace.
