With Workers Hard To Find Immigration Crackdown Leaves Iowa Town In A Bind

The mass-market companies, meanwhile, have been turning their U.S. operations more toward design and marketing, leaving all the cutting, gluing and stitching to manufacturers overseas.

Clark wanted to change that. On his mission to return mainstream manufacturing to America, he zeroed in on the cost and complexity of the labor involved in shoemaking.

U.S. factory owners often say they wish people realized just how many parts and processes it takes to make a shoe. There are multiple layers to create the sole alone, including lots of heavy-duty sewing. Securing the bottom of the shoe takes multiple steps. By the time the shoe is ready to wear, dozens of people might have worked on it.

Clark knew about this, and about the U.S. manufacturers’ struggles withmaterials, parts and workers. But he also knew that history was already starting to repeat itself in China. Wages have been going up there. Footwear companies have been moving yet again to other countries, chasing lower costs.

This could be the opening for America’s comeback, Clark thought. But for it to work, the process had to be simplified maybe a dozen parts instead of 50 and more automated. Maybe then, he said, the manufacturing could be “where the markets are, instead of where the labor is.”

A few years back, he got a contract with a big brand and a grant to get started. He began with making top parts, or uppers, “that didn’t involve a lot of labor,” he said.

Licensing Your Shoe Store

Make sure to choose a business name that identifies it as your shoe store. As long as it is not your personal name, you will need to register the name of your business with your local county clerks office. You will also need to apply for a Federal Business Tax ID for tax purposes. Also, check with your local city to make sure you are following all the proper local ordinances for your store location in order to obtain your business license.

Lastly, in addition to the previously mentioned business license and the addition of a store front, if you are looking to sell licensed shoes such as Nike or Adidas, you will need to fill out the proper applications on their website. If accepted, you can then sell their shoes.

Merrell Shoes: Where Are They Made

Merrells headquarters is in Michigan, USA. But doubtlessly, not every shoe is made in the United States. Due to its worldwide availability, Merrell shoes can be made in some Asian countries like Vietnam and China, then exported to foreign markets.

However, several production lines are mainly manufactured in the USA since Merrell shoe company is still under the management of Wolverine Worldwide.

What Does A Shoe Manufacturer Need To Know

Getting Shoes Made in Hoi An, Vietnam

Trying to get a shoe manufacturer to work with you is a bit like pitching to an investor. The shoe factory representative needs to believe in you, and your ability to develop a commercial shoe business. Some entrepreneurs are surprised when shoe makers dont jump at the chance to work on their exciting project. In reality, most shoe manufacturers have worked with some difficult shoe startups in the past, and feel cautious about repeating that experience.

Some shoe factories simply dont have the capacity or perhaps the inclination to work with entrepreneurs such as yourself.

A shoe factory or footwear sourcing agent is more compelled by the size of your market, than by the tiny details of your customers lifestyle. These are the elements they will be most interested in at first:

  • What your product looks like, and its construction and materials
  • How many styles and colours you will require
  • Projected volumes how many pairs you think you will order from them in the first, second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth seasons
  • Target cost price they dont need to know your retail price but they do need a properly calculated price to work to

What Is Your Intended Selling Market For Your Shoes

Before you start a shoe company you need to know where the shoes are going and where the shoes will come from. Figuring this out may depend on the style of shoe or your marketing plan. Asia or Europe? Athletic shoes are almost always made in Asia. Leather shoes can be made in Asia, but high-end leather or brown shoes are made in Europe.

Choose A Business Name

Business names are more important in some industries. The name of your shoe line is the direct connection to your brand.

When choosing a name, consider what you want people to think when they hear it, and think about the following tips.

If you need help to get started, try an A.I.-powered naming service like Namelix or BNG to point you in the right direction.

Avoid a Name That is Hard to Spell

Since youll likely engage in an ecommerce business, choose a name thats easy to spell and find on a web search. Dont risk losing potential customers because they cant remember how to spell it correctly.

Dont Pick a Name that Limits Your Growth

Think big when choosing! You dont want to limit your growth just because your business name is too narrow.

For example, what if Nike had named themselves Nike Shoe Retailers of Oregon? It would have limited their potential to grow into an international brand that also markets other apparel.

Secure the .com Domain

Before picking your name, do a thorough internet search and check the availability of the domain name and related spellings. If someone else has already established the name, it may be wise to reconsider.

You can check the domain here and register it with , GoDaddy, or Namecheap.

Test it Out

Afshan and her team chose Fuchsia Shoes, and the title of her webpage is Fuchsia Shoes: Luxury Ballet Flats.

Once you choose your name, talk to others about it to see if it represents your ideal branding.

The Ecommerce Business Model

One of the main benefits of operating online is that you are exposed to the entire world, versus just one local area. Rather than depending on foot traffic, you have all the tools at your disposal to create exposure for your store online.

Additionally, there are much lower costs to operate an online store – fewer employees, you can operate from your home, and you get to create your own schedules

Although you are operating online and have the ability to connect with people all over the world, it’s important to consider that you will need to invest marketing money upfront in order to promote your store to the right audience.

Gia Paddock, founder of Boutique Rye explains the 3 reasons why she decided to build an online store:

I wanted to find something I loved but also allowed me to stay home at the same time. While I was working at this local boutique, I realized that there was a lot of sitting around during the day when other people were out working. Therefore, an online business seemed like the best route for a few reasons:

  • We didnt have the extra funds sitting around to pay sign a year or two-year lease at a brick & mortar location.
  • I realized the opportunity to reach a wider audience online compared to the audience of this small local boutique. For us, it seemed like hitting two birds with one stone.
  • And finally , running it as an online-only business would allow me to stay at home with Riley!

Do you need to hire a designer? This can cost $2,000 to $5,000 USD depending on the Scope of your Project. $4000 at least for travel to Asia or Europe also needs to be factored in, and thats only one trip! A basic shoe can cost nearly $20.00 per pair . Minimum Order Quantity per one model/colorway is around 500 pairs. $20.00 x 500 = $10,000 for just one style/color, and should you order shoes by the container, its most efficient to fill one container at 6,000 pairs! This is without even thinking about the prices for lasts and tooling.

You can see it adds up fast! So, yes, you can start your own shoe brand, but dont expect to do it by yourself. You are going to need lots of help! Its a full-time job.

Get Fashion Design Training And Experience

If youre thinking of starting a shoe line, you probably already have an interest or some experience in fashion design. However, shoe design isnt a business to take lightly.

Its necessary to know what youre doing .

The best way to get training in the retail shoe industry is to attend a school that features a program in fashion design or retail.

Even better, you can find schools devoted to fashion design with a department that focuses on shoe design and development. Here are a few to consider:

You also should consider classes or a certification course in business and/or entrepreneurship. This will help you tremendously with the non-design aspects of your shoe line.

    Work in the Retail Industry

Though helpful, degrees and certifications are not a requirement to start your shoe line. Theyre also not an indicator of your chances of success. However, its best to have experience in the retail industry.

Work in areas where you can gain an understanding of fashion buying and the things that drive consumers to purchase particular products .

This experience can also help you network with others who may become key allies in your quest to start your own shoe empire.

How To Create Your Own Shoe Design

You will need something special, unique, and original to catch peoples attention. Billions of shoes get made, what makes yours better than the rest?Do you have designs or do you need to hire a designer to make one? You will also need clean shoe renderings that communicate your ideas to the factory, dont be afraid to hire this out.

The shoe world has many designers for hire that can really bring your ideas to life, but without great designs, your new shoe company wont go anywhere. Once you find a quality designer and plan out some great shoes, make sure to stand back and think about your brand. Does this shoe fit your brand and accomplish what you sought after when starting the design?

    Why The Factory Distribution

When youre playing the industry game, you gotta be smart, and thats exactly what Nike Inc. is. First of all, the focus on these areas is because of the low cost of production. In fact, a pair of shoes costs a fraction of how much we pay for it! Speaking of production, Kanye announced that in the coming two years, all Yeezy manufacturing will come to the US. This hasnt happened yet, but that could mean an increase in Yeezy retail price! This could lead to an increase in Nike sneaker sales, which will become even more affordable compared to Yeezys.

Another reason behind factory distribution is the low cost of labor in Asia and South America. And finally, to not depend on just 1 country for productions. So lets say factories closed in South America due to Covid-19. Its alright, they still have the Asian factories up and running!

Cover Your Last In Masking Tape And Draw Your Pattern

Wrap your entire last in two or three layers of masking tape .Then, carefully draw the patterns for your shoe design on the tape. Finally, Cut your masking tape pattern along the lines you drew with your utility knife.*Importantly,* continue your cuts down onto the bottom of your last at least 1″. You will need this extra fabric to properly sew your shoe together in later steps.Your pattern should consist of at least four parts .1) Vamp: This part covers your laces and moves down to the bottom of the shoe2) Counter: This is the back of the shoe. It is usually stiffer to give the shoe shape 3) Toe: The front of the shoe4) The… other part: This part is in between the front of the shoe and the vamp.* Note: This process could also be used to copy the pattern of a shoe you really like *

Establish A Marketing And Sales Plan

With your supply chain in place, the last step before opening your shoe line is establishing your marketing and sales plan.

Your marketing strategy is what your business will thrive on. Base it on the extensive market research put into your business plan. Forbes has an excellent resource on developing a marketing strategy.

A sales strategy defines your approach to selling your product. Both plans are essential to revenue generation and should be two of your biggest investments.

Purchasing Inventory For Your Shoe Brand

How To Make Shoes: The Definitive Guide

When first starting out, it’s important to start small with your overhead to get a gauge for what people want.

Just remember – if you order a line of items that don’t sell, it’s nearly impossible to recoup the money lost.

Buying the right inventory takes research and planning in order to get it right.

  • Identify your target audience: Identify the age, gender, annual income that you will be selling to. This is a defining factor in ordering the right inventory that will sell.
  • Research your competition: Conduct market research and identify the different types of styles, price points, and materials being used. This will help you see what’s trending and ways that you can improve/stay ahead of the competition.
  • Create an inventory wishlist: Identify what you need for the launch of your business and create a budget that you will stay within. Remember, it’s okay to start small.
  • Find a supplier Make sure to first compare prices and analyze different options.
  • Delivery timing: Schedule the inventory delivery to match with seasonality and trending buying seasons
  • Pro-tip: It’s easy to become biased based on your own fashion preferences on what types of shoes/apparel to purchase. This is where a lot of fashion businesses go wrong. It’s important to base purchase decisions on current buyer behavior, trends in the market, and specific to your niche.

    Outreach And Collection Information

Once youve got a few manufacturers on your radar, youll want to get quotes. Aim to get a minimum of three quotes to compare options.

Now, the biggest question youll likely have for a supplier is How much will this cost? But before you hastily send quote requests, youll want answers to the following questions:

  • Can they accommodate custom orders? Assess if the supplier or manufacturer can create the product you want. Do they have the skills? The resources?
  • What are their leads times? How long will it take to produce and ship items? You dont want to work with manufacturers who take three months to deliver your products. If a product goes out of stock, you dont want to leave customers waiting months to receive their orders.
  • What are shipping costs? Shipping makes up a massive portion of your business expenses. Learn a manufacturers shipping costs to determine how itll affect your bottom line.
  • What are their minimum order quantities ? Dont lead with this question. Itll make you look like a beginner and deter manufacturers from working with you. However, youll want to know the minimum amount of items you have to order before they start producing your product. This is highly negotiable.
  • What is the cost per unit? While youre negotiating MOQs, youll also want to negotiate cost per unit. The larger the order, the lower your cost per unit can be.
  • Are there setup fees involved? Sometimes manufacturers will charge a fee to get equipment ready to produce your goods.
