And by the time your little ones are ready to go to school, their feet will be growing about 1 size per year. Obviously, though, every kid is different and grows differently, so the actual numbers may vary. Thats why its essential you know how to measure your babys feet accurately and regularly.

  • Follow the specific instruction provided in the shoe size chart or guide that you printed. Each size guide tends to have different methods but in general, youll just need to let your baby step on the guide with the biggest toe aligned with the toe in the size guide.
  • Write down the measurements. Do this for both feet.

Measuring The Width Of Your Childs Feet

This is just as important as the length. To do this, follow these key tips:

  • Your child must be standing straight, barefoot with toes spread. This is so the weight is distributed evenly across the feet. If not, the feet wont spread, and you may measure too small.
  • You can use a special width ruler or tape measurement to measure the widest part of the foot this is the ball of the foot around the base of the toes.
  • Be sure not to pull the tape measure too tight. Remember, they may be wearing socks too.
  • You can use a shoe lace mark the shoe lace and measure this on a normal ruler.

Kids Shoe Sizing Tips And Advice

Kids’ shoe sizes can be confusing to navigate. Unlike clothing sizes, your child’s shoe size doesn’t correspond to their age, unless they’re a baby. Baby shoes are listed by age in month. However, you should still measure their feet, since some little ones grow faster than others!

Once your child graduates into kid-size shoes, the sizing system switches to numbers. Sizes 3.5 to 10 are considered little kid shoes. From Size 10.5 onward, you’re into big kid sizes. When your big kid outgrows their size 13.5 kids’ shoes, the system changes again to adult sizing, and you’ll be shopping for a pair of size 1’s.

Fitting Tips And Tricks For Parents

We could go on all day about the dos and donts of shoe shopping with kids. When it comes to finding the perfect fit, here are a few of our favorite hacks:

    • Dont measure in the morning. Feet naturally swell during the day. So, its best to try on new shoes after kids have been running around for a few hours.
    • Don’t buy shoes that are too big. Putting a kid in shoes that are too big can have unintended consequences when it comes to proper foot development. Kids’ feet do grow fast, but putting growing feet in the wrong size shoe just to get a few months of extra wear really isn’t worth the risk.
    • Don’t buy them too small, either. The one exception to the rule of buying true-to-size is when your kid’s feet are two different sizes or in-between sizes. In either case, always go with the bigger size to avoid squishing their feet!
    • Do get involved. You know your kid best. During a shoe fitting, ask your kid how the shoes feel on their feet, and check each area of the shoe yourself to made sure they fit just right.
    • Do more than stand and walk. The best way to gauge a shoe’s true fit is to watch them in action. Ask your kid to jump, dance and jog around when they’re trying on shoes so you can see how they move.
    • Do get a second opinion. Get hands-on help finding the right fit for your kid’s new shoes at any Stride Rite store. Our Fit Experts are trained to know all the right places to check.

Tip Tuesday: How to Accurately Measure Your Baby’s Shoe Size for Moccasins

Indents or red marks on your babys feet, or signs of teetering, dragging or discomfort when they walk, usually indicate that shoes are too tight. There should be some room approximately half an inch between your babys toes and the end of the shoe. You can check this by gently pressing your thumb at the tip of each shoe while your baby is standing.

Another way to check that your babys shoes are the right fit is by inserting your pinky finger at the back of the heel it should fit comfortably, without too much room between the foot and the shoe.

How to measure children’s feet using our small gauge

Every child’s feet grow differently and at different times. In fact, your child’s feet could be smaller or larger than the recommended size for her or his age. That’s why it’s best to get your childs feet measured every few months.

To measure your childs feet at home, download our FOOT MEASURING TOOLor use a ruler or tape measure and measure both the lengths and widths of your child’s feet. Make sure that each foot is fully extended and double check that your childs toes arent curled. For the length, measure from the heel to the longest toe. For the width, be sure to measure the widest part of the foot. Dont worry if you end up with slightly different measurements: children often have size variations between their feet. Using the longest and widest foot, choose a size from the charts below.

Please note, our size recommendation will be slightly larger than your child’s foot to provide room for healthy foot growth and for longer usage. If you find yourself debating between two sizes, always opt for the larger of the two, and if your childs feet are particularly chubby consider sizing up based on their measurements.

Please Note: Certain older styles have different sizing. It is best to use the sizing chart on the actual product page to determine the best size for your child.

Why Does It Seem Like Baby Shoes Are Always Too Big

Printable Shoe Size Chart For Toddlers Nike Toddler Size ...

When we had our first daughter, we were always surprised with how large the baby shoes we bought were. It seemed like they were always at least one size larger than advertised! After starting BirdRock Baby, and learning the ins-and-outs of the shoe business, we learned why: this is a sneaky industry trick to prevent returns.

Many companies don’t trust their customers to choose the correct size shoe, so they make all of their shoes artificially large. They figure “our sizing might not be accurate, but the child will grow into them so the parents won’t return them!”

At BirdRock Baby, we pride ourselves in running our business with honesty and transparency. It’s no fun getting a pair of shoes that isn’t the size you expected, and that’s why our shoes are true-to-size, with accurate size charts on all of our product pages.

How To Measure Your Shoe Size And Width At Home

  • The best time to measure your feet is in the afternoon or evening, when your feet have flattened out. If you measure your feet in the morning, when they are smaller, you might buy the wrong-sized shoes
  • Put your feet on a piece of paper. Stick the paper to the floor with some tape so that it doesnt slip.
  • Draw around your foot with a pen, holding the pen straight up .
  • Measure the longest distance from the heel to the tip of your longest toe.
  • Enter the measurement into the calculator or compare it with the respective shoe size conversion chart.
  • Pro tip: If one of your shoes is always too tight, measure both feet and then use the length of the longest foot to calculate the correct size for your footwear. If the two lengths vary a lot, you should consider getting your shoes specially made or using special insoles. For instructions how to measure children´s feet, please see here.
  • Why Is It Important To Get The Right Size For Your Childs Feet

Why not stuff the end in cotton wool? Their feet grow really quickly right?

A common misconception is to get a bigger size in the hope for the shoes to last longer and to save you the hassle and money of frequent shoe shopping. However, for your childs safety, it is important to find the Goldilocks bear of shoes not too big, not too small, just right!

Its worth saying that being in-between sizes isnt the end of the world in this case go for the size bigger. Just as long as it is comfortable for the child as well.

Getting the right sized shoes helps the healthy development of your childs feet from newborn into their school years. This is particularly important when toddlers learn how to walk.

Childrens feet grow so fast due to soft cartilage that require well-fitting shoes that are sturdy and can be worn all day. Rubber soles give clumsy walkers necessary grip and soft fabric to mould to the childs foot. Ill-fitting shoes, especially at a young age, can emphasise and worsen existing feet problems such as flat feet or cause ingrown toenails. Most toddlers will be flat-footed when they begin walking so the correct shoes are needed for the bones and muscles to strengthen correctly. This is the same for walking with the feet turned inwards.
