The Air Jordan Craze Boosted Sales On All Three Platforms

How To List Sneakers at Stadium Goods Consignment Shop!!!

On the buyer’s side, demand for sneakers has increased as well.

According to BUMP co-founder and CEO Jack Ryder, there has been a significant increase in buyers on his platform as more people look to nab underpriced shoes to resell for more later on.

“Maybe people have a bit more time on their hands to shop or perhaps there’s more attention on the latest releases with not much else going on,” Ryder said, explaining how the recent increase in competition to nab pairs in hyped drops could possibly fuel demand for certain pairs even further.

Demand has been especially strong in the Air Jordan category.

The launch of the ESPN’s Michael Jordan docuseries “The Last Dance” in April sent the prices of valuable Air Jordan to new heights. Luxury consignment platform The RealReal reported a 53% week over week increase in the average selling price for Jordan sneakers during the two weeks following the launch. The CEOs of GOAT, Stadium Goods, and BUMP all reported similar trends.

On GOAT, Air Jordan sales increased by 68% in the first weeks after the series aired. For Stadium Goods, the increased attention to the Jordan brand was the most notable trend since the start of the pandemic.

“That series really struck a chord in pop culture, particularly with sneaker fans,” said Stadium Goods cofounder and co-CEO John McPheters. “And it’s been a welcome diversion from some of the tough news that’s out there.”

What The Stadium Goods And Christies Collab Says About The State Of Sneaker Resale

To receive the Vogue Business newsletter,.

Led by StockX and Goat, reselling sneakers has turned into a highly profitable business in recent years. Thats encouraging more shops and platforms to turn to reselling, with the emphasis on limited-edition sneakers.

Smaller rival Stadium Goods, which was acquired by Farfetch in December 2018, is now racing to catch up. One way is by linking up with auction houses, to reach new, high-spending clients. In return, the auction houses benefit from specialist expertise in sneakers and authentication.

Following on from a smaller-scale initiative with Sothebys in 2019, Stadium Goods is partnering with Christies on an online auction this month that features over 90 variations of Air Jordan sneakers, priced from under $1,000 to over $100,000, Vogue Business can exclusively reveal. Early highlights will be available to browse online on 2 June, with a full selection available at Christies New York from 4 June. The sale proper runs from 22-30 June. Stadium Goods has sourced sneakers for the sale, while Christies focuses on marketing it to buyers.

The goal is to reach a wide international audience of enthusiasts who appreciate the design and historical significance of what were offering, says Ben Jacobs, Stadium Goodss director of global brand strategy and partnerships. Obviously the goal is to sell all of the shoes, but we genuinely hope they end up in the hands of those who will appreciate and display them.

Resale Market: Good Or Bad For Brands

The continued growth of the resale market is dependent on a progressive marketing strategy from big brands such as Nike, Adidas, Louis Vuitton and Gucci, and resale sites from StockX to Vestiaire Collective and Depop want to move closer to brands. They are expanding their reach beyond consumer-to-consumer sales, welcoming storefronts and capsule collections from brands. That involves, typically, collaborations with streetwear brands to create one-off items or limited colourways, experts say. The more restricted the collaboration, the greater the demand pushing up prices for vendors.

Nike and Adidas are focused on tight control over distribution, says NPDs Powell. But there are concerns that the relationship between brand and customer will become strained. When a brand comes out with a shoe for $150 and its suddenly resold for $300, that penalises the relationship between the brand and the consumer, explains Powell. While brands recognise that these platforms bring them a lot of free publicity, theres a downside as well.

If the likes of Nike and Adidas choose to increase supply, that will drive down resale prices, says Powell. Already, the market isnt seeing the kind of resale multiples of even a year ago, he observes. That will suppress interest from the people who were in this strictly for the economics.

How A Single Pair Of Sneakers Explains The Booming Billion

StockX VS. Stadium Goods. Where Should I sell my sneakers in 2021?

Zac leans into the pair of sneakers in his hands and takes a great big whiffthe sort of noisy inhale typically reserved for fresh-out-of-the-oven cookies and the heads of newborn babies. Zac is a sneaker authenticator at Stadium Goods, the New York-based sneaker-resale company, where people frequently buy and sell footwear for thousands of dollars. They are entrusting Zacs nostrils to safeguard their investment. Today, he is eagerly hoovering the vapors from a pair of Nike x Supreme SB Dunks from 2002 that have been on a long and telling voyageone that says a lot about the booming, and still-growing, sneaker resale industry.

The sniff, Zac says, is his favorite way to tell a legitimate shoe from a fake one. He guesses hes personally checked over a million shoes by nowand because he smells each and every sneaker hes looked at, that means hes smelled over a million, too. Folks at the Stadium Goods consignment desk, which resembles a UPS store with its L-shaped counter separating customers from stacks of boxes, typically laugh, Zac says, but the jokes on themhes never been fooled.

Zac can tell if a shoe is fake in less than 30 seconds. Speed is important, because roughly 600 shoes a day come before him and his small team of authenticators. Zac says that at one point, before the team expanded to around a half-dozen, he was authenticating around 200 pairs daily.
