In 1975, Brooks worked with elite runners, including , a former Olympian, to design a running shoe. The collaboration produced the Villanova, Brooks’s first high-performance running shoe. It was the first running shoe to use EVA, an air-infused foam that was quickly adopted by other athletic brands. Brooks followed the Villanova with the Vantage, a running shoe constructed with a wedge to address overpronation. In 1977, based on newly developed measurements of cushioning, flexibility, and durability, the Vantage was ranked at #1 in the annual Runner’s World running guide. Runners embraced Brooks’ technology, and the demand “exploded.” Towards the end of the decade Brooks was among the top three selling brands in the US. The Vanguard was another running shoe which appeared in this decade.

The upper of the Ghost 13 is where Brooks has every other brand beat. It has a new soft engineered mesh which they are calling Air Mesh.
My first run was on a cold winter morning and I could feel the icy wind on my feet so its definitely airy and breathable.
The rest of the upper is what you come to expect from a Brooks Ghost. It has generous amounts of foam in its tongue, collar and heel.
Its tongue is not gusseted but no tongue slide occurs thanks to its wide wings which hold it in place.
The stiff internal heel counter does a good job in locking the heel in place. There are also double last row eyelets for heel-lock lacing but I never needed them.
The toe box of the Ghost 13 is spacious and there is plenty of room for your feet to splay. There is also an internal toe stiffener for structure and support in the toe area.
The heel counter is more streamlined and not as plush as the heel counter of the Ghost 12. The result of the less padded heel counter is that your foot sits further back in the shoe, freeing up room in the forefoot.
This is the reason that the Ghost 13s forefoot feels much roomier than the Ghost 12s.
The high-volume forefoot means that the standard width Ghost 13 is more suited to wide-footed runners who need extra room for their feet to splay.
If you have narrow feet you may need to purchase the narrow version. It also comes in wide and extra wide versions in addition to the narrow and standard widths.

This latest model has updates to the mesh upper to provide breathability in strategic spots, a redesigned midsole and outsole with the intent of more stability, and an updated TPU toe cap and mudguard. Compare the Caldera 4 to the Caldera 3 we tested.

Here’s What My Experience Of Running In Brooks’ Ghost 14s Was Like:
All sustainability initiatives aside, I was quite happy with the Ghost 14s, as a runner. On Sunday, July 19, I donned them while running a half marathon to Rockaway Beach with the Brooklyn running group I co-lead, called Positive Mental Energy. And although the shoes contain different types of recycled materials, unlike the company’s other models, they feel exactly the same as my other models.
TBH, the run felt seriously spectacular and I promise I’m not saying that because there was an ice cold White Claw waiting for me at the end of it, or because the shoes may have been more eco-friendly than my other pair. Like Brooks’ other shoes, the Ghost 14s have reliably fantastic arch support, the materials are soft, they’re light and a bit bouncy, which I personally like in a running shoe.
They’re also really cute and the women’s Ghost 14s come in five different colors.
So, the verdict? The Ghost 14s are great running shoes, and they’re ultra comfortable. The fact they are comprised of some recycled materials is green-wise more impressive than the “carbon neutral” aspect, as the company doesn’t really elaborate on to what degree they participate or invest in said projects. But, we’re thrilled with the shoes and hope the brand continues to do more to “green-ify” its products.

If you want a super exciting, fun ride, dont get the Ghost 13. If you want a consistent, stable ride, you should consider getting the Ghost 13.
Brooks once said that if Goldilocks ran in a shoe, it would be the Ghost. The Ghost 13 isnt the softest or the most engaging shoe on the market and it doesnt do one thing particularly well.
The Ghost stands out because it has no major flaws and is such a well-rounded shoe.
From a beginner runner just starting out, to a marathoner, the Ghost 13 has something for everyone. It can do easy runs, recovery runs and even tempo runs if you dont mind its hefty weight.
So how does the Ghost stack up to the other highly rated everyday trainers? I wouldnt say that its my favourite but it has the most balanced ride and has the best upper.
Its also the most stable of the bunch but it falls behind the pack in midsole and outsole durability.
For me, I prefer a daily trainer with higher levels of responsiveness and durability.
If I could change anything about the Ghost 13, I would make the outsole rubber more durable and I would add in a gusseted tongue for an even better upper fit.
We purchased a pair of Brooks Ghost 13 from runningwarehouse using our own money. This did not influence the outcome of this review, written after running more than 50 miles in them.

Brooks Sports, Inc. was founded in 1914 by John Brooks Goldenberg, following his purchase of the Quaker Shoe Company, a manufacturer of bathing shoes and ballet slippers. Based in Philadelphia, it operated as a partnership between John Goldenberg and his brothers, Michael and Frank. By 1920, Quaker Shoes had been renamed Brooks Shoe Manufacturing Co., Inc., and its shoes were sold under the brand name Bruxshu. In addition to bathing shoes and ballet slippers, it sold a gymnasium shoe, Ironclad Gyms. The company’s innovations included the 1938 introduction of orthopedic shoes for children, Pedicraft, and rubber brakes for roller skates , patented in 1944.
In 1938, the Goldenbergs bought the Carmen Shoe Manufacturing Company in Hanover, Pennsylvania. Until 1957 a better grade leather was purchased, cut, stitched and fit in Philadelphia, while the same procedure in Hanover used lower grade materials. How Long Do Brooks Shoes Last
Brooks shoes are designed for running, and they’ll last like any other running shoe. As with any high-end shoe, the materials used are tougher and they will last longer than some brands. But for comparable brands, such as Asics, or Mizuno, or Nike, you may find that they last around the same time.
To get the best results from your Brooks shoes, they should be replaced at around 800km of running. After this time, they can lose some of the support structure and you are not getting the main benefits of the shoes. For a dedicated runner, this will be around every six months. For the best results, you need to keep an eye on your shoes and take note if your feet are starting to hurt more than they usually do after a run. This is often a good indicator that something is not right, and it could be that the time is up for your shoes and you need a replacement pair.
It’s important to note that Brooks shoes are designed for running, and if you use them for other purposes, they will wear out faster. This is because you’re putting stress on the shoes for performing a job that they were not designed for. For example, because Brooks are made solely for running in a forward direction, using them for a sport that has a lot of lateral movement will cause excessive wear to the sides of the shoes and you may find they come apart quickly. Brooks Ghost 13 First Impressions
Brooks Ghost 13 Lateral Side
When picking up the Ghost 13, and seeing the dimpled DNA Loft all along the lateral side, I thought to myself that the Ghost now looks more similar to the top of the range Glycerin than ever before.
I liked the fun 80s style graphic overlays on the midfoot and rearfoot of the Ghost 13 more than the all-business style upper of the Ghost 12.
The mesh upper of the Ghost 13 also felt softer and more stretchy than the stiffer upper of the Ghost 12. The heel counter is also less padded than the Ghost 12.
When putting the shoe on for the first time, my foot sank into the plush, thick BioMogo sockliner. Sink-in softness has always been a trademark of the Ghost series.
Im normally in-between shoe sizes so I made the decision to go with the bigger size because Ghost uppers are so padded and plush.
This ended up being the wrong decision. I could feel my feet swimming in the roomy upper of Ghost 13.
I hate the feeling of wearing clown shoes so I had to exchange them for a half size smaller. Overall the fit is much more roomy than previous versions of the Ghost.
My first run in Ghost 13 was one of familiarity. The Ghost personality came through strongly even in my first couple of metres in them.
If you were looking forward to a big change, you will be disappointed but if you didnt want the Ghost to change much, you will be very happy with the Ghost 13.
