How Do I Save Money Buying Kids Shoes

How to find the right-sized shoe for your child

Youll notice a remarkable price difference between womens and childrens shoes. If youre not convinced, look up any shoe online and do a price comparison between a womens model of shoe and the youth equivalent, if there is one. Do a simple size conversion, and youll realize youre getting the same shoe from the same brand at a fraction of the cost. Not only are you growing your shoe collection, but youre also growing your savings too!

What Do You Need To Learn Before Measuring Your Baby Feet

If your baby has already started walking, make sure you do the foot calculation in the evening, as the feet expand through the day. It means that by evening the feet are the widest.

It is wise to use the form of socks or storages that your baby uses in the pair that you want to purchase for them.

Rounding up or down can cut down the measuring precision to some extent. It is because the dimensions of shoe size frequently vary as slightly as 3.2 mm and also the foot scales are as precise as they are.

How To Measure A Childs Foot

In order to get a correct measurement, a child needs to be standing upright with weight balanced between the heel and the toe. Ideally, have them stand against a wall with equal weight on each foot. This provides a great opportunity to put a mark on the height chart too! Place something, like a ruler or book, at the tip of the longest toe, and take the measurement from the wall to that point. In terms of width, listen to your kid. If there is a liner inside a boot, take it out and make sure their foot isnt falling over the edges.

Shopping Online And The Risks Involved When Choosing The Size

Shopping from a catalog or an online store has always carried a minor concern of uncertainty, which can offset by the increased selection and usually lower price.

Therefore, if buying online is the way you want to go, let us be the first and possibly last stop. With all the charts from all the countries and manufacturers making the shoes at your disposal, your task becomes easier. You need a starting point, like men’s loafers size 9, or women’s heels, size 5, double A.

Then you find the pair you want to buy. With your size information in your hand and the wealth of information from this site, and with a little luck, you should be able to find some way to make the comparison between what is being sold and what you need. This will ultimately allow you to make the right choice.

Finally, many people, of both sexes, like to exaggerate about the size shoes they wear. Large men will wear big shoes. Allegedly, women will often claim to wear a shoe smaller than their shoe size, or that is what Hollywood would have us believe. The key is to be truthful.

In the movie “Steel Magnolias”, Dolly Parton runs a beauty shop and the subject of shoes came up. She says something to the effect that she wears a size six, but because a size seven are so comfortable, she buys a size eight. The numbers may be off, but as we all know, show sizes can vary, and we do not know where the shoes she allegedly purchased were from a country where a size 6 may equal a size 8.Do your homework ahead of time.

How To Measure Your Feet

Apologies for a bit of blurriness. Homeschool-work-at-home-mom-blogger life is chaotic. To do list for future updates includes better pics.

One REALLY important thing to keep in mind when you do this is whyyyy you are tracing and for what shoes. If you are tracing for sandals or flats where you will wear nothing, then by all means, measure your bare foot. If you are tracing for shoes where you will wear medium socks, then trace your foot that way. If youre looking at double socking in some winter boots, then trace that way.

Yes, that means you may end up with a bunch of tracings/measurements over time. Sounds useful to me!

Method 1: Wall Method

This method is the most common and likely to give you the most accurate results as it eliminates the extra mms you gain from the width of whatever implement youre using to trace your foot.

  • Place your foot lightly against a firm, flat surface with a paper under your foot and lined up with the same surface
  • Place a book lightly against the most distant point of your foot
  • Remove your foot
  • Measure the distance from the mark to the edge of the page
  • Do this for both width and length, and if you only do 1 foot make sure it is your larger foot

Look here for a quick video of this method from Katja/Bosenogice

Method 2: Tracing Method

This is a popular method because the visual is nice, but its probably the least accurate method.

Katja has a video of this as well.

Method 3: Plus 12

Kids’ Shoe Sizes By The Numbers

How To Measure Kids Shoe Size From Home In Less Than 30 Seconds!

Shopping for kids shoes doesnt seem like it should be overly difficult, but, unfortunately, figuring out kids shoe sizes can often be a confounding process. To help clear things up, here are the most important things to understand about kids shoe sizes:

Toddlers sizes run from 013: The smallest sizes in this range are tiny baby shoes, but the larger sizes often fit kids who are 4 or 5 years old or even older. Important: These shoes are often marked with T for toddler up to size 7 . Sizes 813 are typically marked with Kids .

Bigger kids sizes run from 17 : Heres where lots of parents get tripped up. Shoes for bigger kids start at size 1 and run up to 7, creating the confusing fact that a size 1 shoe is the next size up from a size 13 shoe . Sometimes shoe brands will help you out by having their 17 toddler sizes marked with T and their other sizes designated as Kids. Thats how you tell little toddler shoes from kids’ shoes even if they have the same number. For example, if you see a shoe thats available in size 5 Kids, you know thats the bigger kids’ 5, not a toddlers’ 5.

Not all brands and retailers use the same language:

The Anatomy Of A Toddler’s Foot

Toddler feet continue growing at a rapid rate about a half size every 2-3 months. During this stage of development, early walkers develop fine motor skills and balance as they practice crawling, rolling, walking, climbing, jumping and every kind of movement you can imagine!

Toddlers need shoes that enhance proprioception, which is the way joints and muscles send messages to the brain to help coordinate movement. Their feet should stay low to the ground and supported so they can get all the sensory feedback they need. Thats why our SRtech shoes for early walkers include memory foam footbeds and unique sensory pods on the soles.

Many little ones remain flatfooted throughout toddlerhood. Their arches may not fully develop until around their fifth birthday. Generally, flat arches are normal for toddlers and not a cause for concern. But if your child complains of pain or you observe extreme pronation or misalignment, have their feet checked by a podiatrist.

Figuring Out How Much A Childs Foot Will Grow

This is the tough part. Should the shoe be snug like the cleats of pro soccer players? How large can you buy a running shoe so you dont have to get another pair in 3 months? The general rule is to leave 1-1.5cm from the toe to the tip of the shoe for growth. As a mom, I know my boys pretty well, and will shy on the higher end if I know they havent had a growth spurt recently.

What Should You Remember About

Remember that children’s feet are growing fast. The size of the footwear you choose for them may turn out to be too small in a few months. According to manufacturers’ suggestions, you should add 3% of the child’s foot to the measurements. For example,. if the child’s foot is 15 cm long, you should calculate the total length as follows: 15 cm + = 15.45 cm.

Kids feet grow half their current size every three months. Their feet are at their biggest during the afternoons after they spend a day of standing tall. Measure it during that time and be sure to triple-check the measurements after you take them for best results. If your kid plans to wear socks, take the measurements with the socks on .

Although its nice to eyeball measurements and ask your relative to do your kids shoe shopping for you, youll realize that doing some researching and taking them yourself pays off. This way, every time your kids feet grow bigger, you know what to do and are not at the mercy of going to the store.

Plus, taking measurements at home is also time-saving and doesnt involve a lot of running around. And the fun part is in the shopping once you take care of the number crunching stuff.

My Experience Fitting Childrens Shoes

I have been working for a specialized childrens shoe store for over 10 years now. This is a specialized shoe store that focuses on children with foot and leg problems, but we provide regular shoe fittings as well. Over the years I became familiar with how to make sure that shoes are fitting correctly.

I have fitted children for their first pair of shoes up to their teenage years.

Shoe Shopping Tips For Toddlers

  • Bring socks: Unless youre shopping for sandals, your tot will likely have to wear socks with shoes. Use the appropriate socks thick for winter boots and light for summer sneakers. Then the shoe will fit right even when theres extra padding.
  • Forget trends: Dont give in to the latest trends of clogs, pointy boots, or high heels. These arent likely to provide any beneficial support to a toddler whos still mastering their walk. Instead, go for something supportive.
  • Provide options: Some toddlers want to decide what they wear. If so, find a few different, but appropriate, shoes and ask your little one to choose which they like best.
  • Opt for Velcro: A hook and loop closure such as Velcro is much easier for a toddler to put on without assistance. This way, your child learns how to put on shoes, and you save time otherwise wasted tying shoelaces.

How The Childrens Shoe Size Conversion To Womens Size Works

The shoe sizing for big kids or youth is built on the same scale as mens shoes. Subtracting one point five to two from your womens size will give you your equivalent childrens size. Likewise, you can go in the opposite direction and add 1.5 to 2, if you want to convert a kids shoe size to womens.

Tips On Shopping For Children’s Shoes

Sizing Children’s Feet – Softstar Shoes

At four years old your child’s foot will be double the size it was at birth. Children’s shoes can have slightly firmer soles than a toddler’s shoe, but there should still be plenty of flexibility. Pronation control is healthy for adult feet. For a kid’s feet, a little bit of arch support goes a long way. Never try to correct a child’s walking gait without a podiatrist’s informed diagnosis and recommendation. Even though your child is older, their feet will still be growing rapidly. Between age four and five most children’s feet grow at least a half a shoe size every four to five months. You can buy your child’s shoes a little large for their feet, but avoid buying shoes that are more than one size too big or the shoe will become a tripping hazard. When choosing between children’s shoe uppers, breathable materials like leather and canvas are best. Children’s feet often sweat a lot.

How Often Should I Measure My Kids Feet

Your kids will grow rapidly for their first four years. Its important to measure their feet frequently during this time.

Aim for every 68 weeks from when your kid starts wearing shoeseven shoes that are just for show.

During growth spurts, you may want to do this more frequently, perhaps every two weeks.

It seems excessive to measure their feet every two months, though, doesnt it? Roomy shoes or a slight, not painful pinch never hurt anyone.

First of all, thats not true.

A too-large kids shoe can cause the feet to slide around inside them, causing falls. They may be minor accidents, but you want to be safe, and kids enjoy scratched hands and knees.

Its even more important that the shoes arent too tight as the feet grow.

Your kids are growing. Poorly fitting kids shoes can restrict healthy growthif you dont believe this, look at China.

In China, tiny feet were the desirable anatomy for girls. To achieve this, kids feet would be bound, and tiny kid shoe sizes were used to restrict growth, resulting in disfigured feet and restricted growth.

Of course, nothing so drastic will happen with your kids, but a study shows that most kids wear the wrong size shoes.

Common Shoe Sizing Mistakes To Avoid

If you follow the tips above, and make sure to use a size chart from the brand you’re shopping with, you shouldn’t have any problems selecting the perfect size shoes for your baby’s feet. Here are a few “gotchas” to make sure to avoid…

Try to avoid hand-me-downs while your little one is still mastering motor skills. Shoes mold to the child’s foot through use, and hand-me-down shoes will be molded to the original wearer’s foot. This could cause irritation in places where the shoe rubs against the foot, and might even cause them to shift their weight incorrectly while walking.

Keeping an eye on foot size

They grow up so fast, and in the blink of an eye they will need to size-up about every 3-4 months. Monitor that growth with regular checks every couple months to make sure they don’t start to outgrow the shoes. It helps to set a reminder on your phone so you remember to check.

If your little starts taking shoes off, hobbling around, or rubbing their feet, those are late signs that they’ve outgrown their shoes and need a new pair quickly!

Go big!

If you have done all the calculations and find your baby between sizes, go with the larger size. A little extra room to grow is a good thing.

Fitting Tips And Tricks For Parents

We could go on all day about the dos and donts of shoe shopping with kids. When it comes to finding the perfect fit, here are a few of our favorite hacks:

  • Dont measure in the morning. Feet naturally swell during the day. So, its best to try on new shoes after kids have been running around for a few hours.
  • Don’t buy shoes that are too big. Putting a kid in shoes that are too big can have unintended consequences when it comes to proper foot development. Kids’ feet do grow fast, but putting growing feet in the wrong size shoe just to get a few months of extra wear really isn’t worth the risk.
  • Don’t buy them too small, either. The one exception to the rule of buying true-to-size is when your kid’s feet are two different sizes or in-between sizes. In either case, always go with the bigger size to avoid squishing their feet!
  • Do get involved. You know your kid best. During a shoe fitting, ask your kid how the shoes feel on their feet, and check each area of the shoe yourself to made sure they fit just right.
  • Do more than stand and walk. The best way to gauge a shoe’s true fit is to watch them in action. Ask your kid to jump, dance and jog around when they’re trying on shoes so you can see how they move.
  • Do get a second opinion. Get hands-on help finding the right fit for your kid’s new shoes at any Stride Rite store. Our Fit Experts are trained to know all the right places to check.
