SIDI Adventure 2 Gore-Tex Mid Boots Review

Others have tried. Few have even come close. The Adventure 2 Gore-Tex Mid Boots strike a unique balance of adventure-ready protection with improved off-bike comfort and capability. Borrowing features and style from the full-height Adventure 2 Boots, this boot’s medium height and lighter weight give the rider unencumbered ankle articulation and less restriction when walking and hiking. Gore-Tex serves as the Adventure 2 Mid’s means of achieving superior ventilation and waterproofing. Leather inner boot panels and a slim overall profile promise good bike feel and dexterity.

Who Are They For

While the Adventure 2s specs suggest that theyre for the long-haul adventurers gravitating toward technical route options, with everything from water crossings to rock-filled passes, the aforementioned versatility means that the boots are equally beneficial for casual riders who are unwilling to sacrifice safety for a boot thats easily disguised as casual footwear.

Performance comes, of course, with a price tag, and the boot costs enough to make it a more realistic option for those who can take advantage of its technological innovations. Peace of mind can be expensive, and innovation isnt cheap. Both are doubly valuable the longer and more technical your adventure is.

Ye Olde Wbw Bucket Test

Something that did get done immediately after the boots were received was the time-honored wBW Bucket Test, a must when testing boots and gloves. Now admittedly, as is the case for these boots, the test is often completed through a series of activities.

First up is the big-tub test with ice-cold water although not as full as used for the full-height footwear tests of course. With the standard socks on the feet are inserted into the boots that are then immersed into the tub with the water level just below the top of the mid boots.

After a couple of minutes, the cold of the surrounding water could be felt but there was no discomfort and not a bit of moisture made its way inside over a period of fifteen minutes. At the end of this first activity, the cold could be felt more, but it was tolerable.

From this point on, the test activities and related environmental protection challenges are real world, in -3 to +5C temperatures , some rain, some sleet, and some snow at no time did any moisture from the outside make its way into the boots.

Between the effectiveness of the boots, including the Gore-Tex membrane along with mid to heavyweight technical-blend socks worn a comfortable dry environment is maintained for the feet pretty much an expected bottom line when wearing any of the Sidi Gore-Tex based footwear.

Incorporating the indispensable features of the original ADV powerhouse SIDI Adventure Gore-Tex Boots, the SIDI Adventure 2 Gore-Tex Boots boast upgrades and refinements in strategic areas without upsetting the recipe that made the original such a standout success.

Most salient of the improvements Sidi has made with the redesign of the Adventure 2 Gore-Tex Boots is the full-height 14 inch Gore-Tex gaiter, which now extends 3 inches higher up the shaft for increased waterproofing – especially useful when fording water crossings. With additional stretch at the back of the calf, there is now more space and flexibility in the shaft to accommodate a wider range of riders calf-sizes. SIDI has also increased the area of split-grain leather grip paneling on the inside of the calf as well as the instep for better feel when standing on the pegs off road.

The ankle flex system, tongue-in-groove Achilles protector and other TPUs on the SIDI Adventure 2 have been refined for a slimmer overall profile with better protection, eliminating any clumsiness or bulky feel interfacing with the bike. Strategically-placed flex zones allow for better flexibility right out of the box, resulting in a much shorter break-in period, better walkability, dexterity and comfort. Wherever you may adventure to, the SIDI Adventure 2 Gore-Tex Boots are one of the best all-weather, on/off-road ADV boots money can buy.

Protection From The Elements

Sidi Adventure 2 Gore

This is kind of short but sweet for now It is going to take a lot more riding time to fully assess just how good the Sidi Adventure 2 Gore-Tex Mid Boots are for day-in-day-out elemental protection duties, but initial performance in wet and cold environments as winter set in was very good a good sign for the longer term.

Support Traction & Comfort

The upper boot shaping and strength, along with the ankle flex wraparound, the main TPU rear heel block, and the two crossover straps provide a strong secure housing for the feet and ankle and a bit of the lower leg.

The heavy-duty rubber sole with its Vibram-style lug bottom grip pattern is strong and supportive absorbing impacts and vibration while still providing great feedback to the feet this connectivity minimizes the isolation and stiffness that many users complain about when wearing adventure or pure off-road style footwear.

And when dismounted, the rubber sole and pattern used by Sidi remains a favorite, whether hiking for extended hikes over gnarly rough terrain or walking on hard flat surfaces for a few hours I have hiking boots that arent as comfortable or as effective.

Mounted & Dismounted Specifics

This is an easy to rate category for both variants of the Sidi Adventure 2 Gore-Tex products. Both sets of boots work extremely well on the pegs sitting or standing, but even with limited riding use so far, the mid boots seem to be as or even a bit more comfortable for peg use. And once dismounted, they are the more comfortable boot a clearly stated objective for Sidi.

Riding the riding experience with the mid boot version of the Adventure 2 Gore-Tex boot is pretty much akin to that experienced with the full height variant. There are some minor differences related to the upper a bit more pressure can be felt on the upper shin from the top of the shorter boot, but the offset is far more overall flexibility of the upper boot itself given a shorter and somewhat narrower profile.

Walking as mentioned above, the shorter, lighter and slightly narrower profile mid boot lends itself to virtually any sort of dismounted use, including the long walks or hiking forays over mixed ground feel, flex, and grip is never an issue with these boots.

Summary: Outstanding. These mid boots are becoming my go-to footwear for almost any type of riding excursion be it around town, the backroads or highway use they are that comfortable, protective, and accommodating. Dismounted use over the short term or day long, hard or soft surfaces not an issue full control and total comfort.

Splitting The Difference Between Comfort And Protection

When the time was drawing near for our big middleweight adventure shootout in March, I had the feeling it would be a good time for me to up my foot protection. I didnt wanna wear big clonky motocross boots because theyre big and clonky. But I was afraid the Sidi Canyons that have been my go-to Adventure boots for longer than Id like to admit might not be up to modern adventuring. More accurately, maybe my ankles, which are three times older than the Canyons, might not be up to it. How about a little more protection eh? Just in case.

The two adjustable cam-lock buckles per boot lock your ankle firmly in place while almost completely doing away with my biggest complaint about my old Canyons: Instead of an acre of Velcro closing up the boot, now theres only about a 2-square-inch triangle at the top of each flap. Once youre in there, the ankle protection at both sides feels much more substantial, too.

Buckles are replaceable, too, if you should somehow manage to damage one.

Outside, Sidi uses its full grain microfiber material, which is synthetic leather thats tougher and lighter than the real thing. That lightness is a big part of what makes these Adventures, and the Canyons, so comfortable for walking around. Microfiber seems like it might outlast the real thing too, and it shines right up like leather if you believe in shoe polish.

These Boots Inherit The Protective Elements Of Sidi’s Motocross Range But Are Lighter And More Comfortable

The right footwear is absolutely essential in keeping you safe and comfortable while riding out on your motorcycle. This is especially true when it comes to adventure riding, wherein you want to find the happy medium between the safety offered by full off-road equipment and the comfort of street-focused riding gear. Luckily, several manufacturers have developed new boots which are lighter, and more comfortable, while remaining ultra protective.

The Italian footwear brand Sidi has built a good reputation for producing all-terrain boots for cyclists and motorcyclists for more than 50 years. The firm has updated its motocross models for dual-purpose usage with its adventure variants in response to the global growth in popularity of adventure riding. With a mid-cut Adventure Mid 2 Gore-Tex variant, the company increases the latter’s versatility. This hardy half-boot has gussets on the rear for added comfort and full-grain leather and suede on the inside of the foot.

The transalpine boot is only available in black, but the numerous strap and buckle replacement components, which can be found on the official Spidi website in a variety of colors, allow you to add a pop of color. As for pricing and availability, the Sidi Mid Adventure 2 Gore is sold for 289.95 euros, or the equivalent of $294 USD, per current exchange rates. The Italian manufacturer is offering them in sizes ranging from 39 to 50, and in just one all-black colorway.

Sidi Adventure 2 Gore

Borrowing shamelessly from the full height Sidi Adventure 2 Gore-Tex boots reviewed in May 2017, the mid boot features less height and less weight all claimed to provide better less-constrictive ankle articulation and fewer restrictions overall for walking or hiking extended distances on mixed surfaces all part of the adventure.

These mid boots retain all the proven features of the full height Adventure 2 pieces, including the totally functional Gore-Tex membrane that encases the foot and ankle to wick moisture out while stopping external moisture from getting in.

Viewed from the sole up its hard to differentiate them from their taller siblings until the gaze upwards comes to a sooner than expected stop. These boots are obviously part of the Adventure 2 family, but do they live up to the family reputation?

How They Performed

Sidi Adventure 2 Mid Gore

Im often reminded of the dangers that come with bringing new gear on a long ride without first testing it on a shorter outing. At worst, youll find unexpected hotspots or design flaws that detract from the ride, while at best, youll battle through a break-in period that keeps you on your toes through the first gas stop. I ignored these truths when setting off on my first trek with the Adventure 2, a true test of the boots strategically placed flex zones, which are designed to offer better flexibility out of the box.

Fortunately, the updates work as SIDI designers intended, the boots feeling immediately comfortable and long-haul friendly. Feel and feedback at the footpegs was great and there was no problem shifting or finding the brake lever. Off-road protection usually robs you of this feel, but not here.

That unobtrusive feel carries over to the rest of the boot-wearing experience. The Adventure 2 feels well-built and is as easy to slip into as the simple, two-buckle restraint system suggests. Theres something to be said for focused updates and straightforward features like the cam lock buckle system, and I never took for granted the fact that I could slip into these boots with absolute ease. Sitting down after a long days ride, youll appreciate how easy the boots are to slip out of, too.

What We Liked

  • Despite being completely waterproof, the boot is breathable enough to keep your feet cool during warmer rides.
  • Light enough to feel less burdensome in transport, and during longer days on the bike. Why carry big weights on your feet?
  • Impressive waterproofing capability gives utmost confidence in bad weather.
