Other Versions Of The Sorel Caribou

SOREL Caribou Stack Waterproof SKU: 9400176

We tested the mens Caribou, and Sorel also makes the boot in a womens-specific version. The womens Sorel Caribou costs the same at $170 but is around an inch shorter than its mens counterpart, weighs less at 3 pounds 6 ounces, and comes in a few different colorways. Otherwise, the two models share the same 9-millimeter felt liner, outsole design, and waterproof construction. In addition, Sorel makes a wool model of the Caribou that is very similar to the version tested here, but rather than felt, it uses wool for even more warmth and moisture-wicking and costs an additional $20.

Where To Buy & Prices

The Caribou is widely available online as well as, in colder climates at least, offline. Online, Amazon usually has the full compliment of sizes and colors of the Caribou boot available.

The Caribou is generally priced around $150, although Amazon often sells it for less than elsewhere online.

  • Sorel.Com – If you can’t find the size/color you like, the Sorel website is the place to check. However, unless a sale is happening, prices are usually “full priced.”
  • Zappos.Com – Another good retailer to buy boots from, as they offer free return shipping if the boots don’t fit.

Important note when purchasing through Amazon. If you buy footwear through one of the “third party sellers,” the purchase may not qualify for free return shipping.

Sorel Leather Caribou Stack Waterproof Winter Boots in Black for Men

The Sorel Caribou is a classic Pac boot, a winter boot design with both advantages and disadvantages. In general, Pac boots are very comfortable and offer a spacious, sometimes sloppy, fit. They have the benefit of a removable liner that allows you to dry them out quickly should you sweat too much or get moisture inside of them. The Caribou is absolutely warm and waterproof, though it isn’t the most comfortable or grippy on slippery surfaces.

Advantages Of The Sorel Caribou Boot

Some of the advantages of the boot include:

    • Very warm. Boot has an excellent insulation liner which is also replaceable. The insulation consists of 9mm ThermoPlus felt InnerBoot that provides superb warmth, moisture transfer, comfort, and durability. This allows the boot to have a temperature rating of -40 degrees.
    • Excellent support. The upper extends far above the ankle, providing excellent protection from deep snow and mud as well as solid ankle support.
    • 100% waterproof
    • Superb durability. The Sorel Caribou boot is legendary in terms of durability. It is very common for a Caribou to last ten years or more, even when used on a daily basis. The removable and replaceable inner liner also greatly extends the life of the boot.

Should You Buy The Sorel Caribou

The Sorel Caribou has been around for the past 50 years and is many people’s definition of a snow boot. The design concept is solid, and while we feel that it is not a suitable candidate for long winter hikes, it is an overall good winter boot that provides great warmth and weather resistance and is easy to use. It will fit the needs of many people looking for a quality boot to see them through the winter with a classic style. This boot retails for about average for the contenders in this review. Its versatility is less than some of the other boots at this price, and we have already voiced concerns about the durability of the rubber used in the lowers. However, we didn’t encounter that problem ourselves. Still, there are better boots out there for the price.

    Boot Height: Protection And Support

The Caribou has a shaft height of 9.25 inches , which is taller than most of its casual competition. For example, The North Face Chilkat IV is only 6.25 inches tall, and the Columbia Bugaboot Plus IV measures 6.7 inches, although the latter has a bit more of a performance slant. On the other hand, the strikingly similar Kamik NationPlus has a listed shaft height of 10 inches and feels on par with the Caribou. What all this means is that with the Sorel, you’re getting a good level of protection and a barrier from the elements: 9+ inches of height gives you quite a bit of clearance to prevent snow from entering the boot, and you can always add snow pants overtop if conditions take a serious turn .

The downside of the taller shaft height is that the Sorel Caribou can be cumbersome to move in. Boots designed for winter hiking generally have lower shaft heights to allow for greater mobility, whereas casual models tend to be taller because movement doesnt matter as much. The Caribou comes all the way up above the bottom of the calf, which is noticeable when walking and not ideal if youre really moving or traveling far. Again, theyre a nice casual option, but we dont recommend them for long winter walks, winter hiking, or snowshoeing.
