Altra Paradigm 30 Running Shoes
If youre already an Altra fan, the Paradigm has everything you would expect in a daily trainer: zero drops from heel to toe and a toebox that follows the foots natural contours.
What the Paradigm adds is cushioning. As the most cushioned Altra trainer, it boasts an exceptionally soft forefoot.
Extra cushioning is often a consideration for runners dealing with foot injuries, making Paradigm the best Altra shoes for plantar fasciitis.
Your Feet In Wide Vs Narrow Shoes: Great Visual From Altra Running
Altra Running posted a photo on their Facebook page showing an X-Ray image comparing foot shape in an Altra shoe vs. a narrow shoe with a pointed toebox . The difference is striking:
I contacted Altra to confirm that these were real X-Rays, and was told that they were, and that its the same persons foot in two different shoes.
One of the things that many people who migrate into more anatomically shaped footwear report is that their feet seem to widen over time. Personally, I used to be a solid size 10 in nearly every shoe that I wore. Lately, however, I find myself bumping up more and more frequently into size 10.5 shoes to accommodate my forefoot. Has it really widened? Not sure and I dont have measurements, but Ive been in roomy shoes almost exclusively for several years now, and I dont doubt in the least that footwear can influence foot shape through bony and soft tissue adaptation.
Personally, Ive come to value flat footwear with a roomy toebox for all day use at home in the office . Somewhat ironically, since experimenting with running shoes is what led me to this preference, the only time I can now tolerate a somewhat snug shoe is when Im running. For example, I like a racing/speedwork shoe to fit a bit snug and to be a bit stiff. For the rest of my runs I like to mix things up, but generally prefer a roomier fit. For all day, flat and wide all the way.
Curious, if youve made the switch to wider shoes, have you noticed a change in foot shape?

How To Make Better Shoe Choices
Wearing supportive shoes that promote proper biomechanicsmeaning, your foot moves in the way it’s supposed towill stop you from putting an uneven amount of weight on the inside of your foot and contributing to bunion formation or exacerbating an existing bunion. For many people, a simple shoe switch-up relieves bunion pain and gets them back to the activities they enjoy.
“Footwear choices are key,” says Amy Dunetz, DPM, a Florida-based podiatrist. Before buying shoes, it’s best to get your feet measured and fitted so you know exactly what size to buy to account for the bunion. Proper sizing, especially when it comes to width, is super important.
Some guidelines from Dr. Dunetz to keep in mind: Avoid pointy toe boxes. And skip very high heels, which put too much pressure on the forefoot. Look for shoes without straps or sides that go across the bunion, as they can press on it. Summer shoes shouldn’t be thin or flimsy buy shoes with support and padding between your foot and the ground.
So, which shoes are tops? Dr. Flynnwho says he typically guides patients toward high-quality sneakers meant for endurance runningexplains the five most important features to look for in shoes if you have bunions:

Altra One V3 Running Shoes
Theres no disagreement about the Altra One: this shoe is fast. Shaved down to just 7.9 ounces in a mens size 9, the One is light and flexible with a natural feel.
Its sole is firmer than Altras other uptempo shoes for a snappier feel at toe-off.
It can go the distance in a workout, but the One is really meant to be a no-compromise shoe for race day.
Altra Torin 45 Running Shoes
Are you sure the Torin isnt an uptempo performance shoe? Everybody calls the Torin a highly cushioned daily trainer.
But its only a tenth of an ounce heavier than the performance-minded Impulse.
Isnt that too light for a daily trainer? You can keep calling the Torin a lightweight daily trainer all you want.
I think these shoes have a few good tempi runs in them and maybe a road interval workout or two.

Altra Intuition/instinct 45 Running Shoes
The Altra Instinct or Intuition 4.5 is the latest updated support roadrunner from Altra. The Altra Instinct 4.5/Intuition 4.5 is Altras most versatile everyday running shoe and has had a few updates compared with version 4.
The best Altra running shoe isnt a mountain shoe or a racing flat based on runners votes. As you probably know already, Altras shoes are Zero Drop to promote a more natural midfoot landing.
Its just a moderate cushion, zero drops, a neutral trainer with a wide toe box.
Altra shoes also differ in shape from mens to womens as our feet are different anatomically. The upper is now an engineered mesh. There is now a rubber wrap around the toe box for more toe protection, and a more plush and softer ride makes this shoe more of an everyday training shoe.
Moreover, based on many wearers comments, the Altra Instinct 4.5 is a running shoe highly recommendable for people with a high-volume foot.
The roomy toe box, spacious in-shoe environment, and comfortable platform were all positives that are highlight by users.
In conclusion, it was a satisfactory shoe that many found to have done the job as a daily runner.
Why Are Some People Prone To Bunions
Despite common belief, poorly fitting shoes aren’t the main cause of bunions. But they certainly contribute to bunion development and make already-existing bunions worse.
“Genetics is a primary driving point,” says Zachary Flynn, DPM, a podiatrist and fellowship-trained foot and ankle surgeon at Phoenix Spine & Joint in Arizona. A person’s foot typewhether you have high arches or flat feetcan also play a role.
According to the National Library of Medicine, people with weak connective tissue, a short Achilles’ tendon, short calf muscles, or joint diseases like rheumatoid arthritis have a higher risk of developing bunions. Women tend to get bunions more than men.
For many people, treatments like using toe spacers overnight, wearing wider and more supportive shoes, taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs , and doing physiotherapy are sufficient for managing bunion pain.
If your bunions are causing you a lot of pain or if the deformity makes it hard to do certain activities or wear shoes, your doctor may recommend surgery.

Why You Want A Foot Shaped Toebox
This may sound a little odd when you first hear that they make a foot shaped shoe, but once you see it things begin to click. I dont know about you, but my toes arent shaped like the image on the left.
This design allows your toes to spread out, which provides you with the ability to get more power from each stride.
How A Revolutionary Running Shoe Started Out In A Toaster
Altra co-founder Golden Harper shares the secrets to disrupting a 20-billion-dollar industry.
Golden Harper ran his first marathon at 10 years old, about the same age he started helping out around his familys running store in Orem, Utah, just south of Salt Lake City. A decade and countless running medals later, the BYU-Hawaii exercise science major identified a hole in the running shoe market for zero-drop sneakers, which cushion the toe and the heel at the same level to mimic the biomechanics of walking barefoot.
But how did the co-founder of Altra get from that mid-2000s epiphany to today, leading an innovative company with more than 200 employees and revenues topping $50 million? That tale involves a healthy dose of curiosity, the dream of helping people run pain-free and, yes, a toaster.
Here he shares the brands early history and simultaneously pulls back the curtain on an industry with some skeletons in its closet.

Are Trail Runners Good For Hiking
Yes!!! Unless it is a backpacking trip where I plan to carry more weight, I almost always wear my La Sportiva Raptors when hiking. Review Of Altra Lone Peaks
Many hikers have strong opinions on Altra, positive and negative. It was the most popularand least populartrail runner that I sold at Appalachian Outdoors.
So my Altra Lone Peak review briefly evaluates the support, weight, comfort, fit, weather resistance, traction, and durability of this unconventional trail runner. That should help you figure out its exactly what you wantor the opposite of what you wantin a hiking shoe.
Balanced Cushioning And Zero Drop Platform
Traditional running shoes feature a drop, meaning the heel of the shoe is higher than the toe. This drop can range from 4 mm to 12mm. Every shoe in Altras lineup is designed with a Zero Drop that puts the heel and forefoot at the same level. This Balanced Cushioning keeps the body aligned to help with strength and maintain balance. A Zero Drop allows for more natural movement as you run, encourages front-to-back weight distribution, and amplifies propulsion by strengthening the Achilles tendon.

How To Choose The Best Altra Running Shoes
If youre looking to buy a pair of Altra running shoes, there are several factors to consider, including:
- Functionality. When choosing a running shoe, youll first want to consider the type of running youll be doing. Some, for example, are designed with extra stability for trail running, while others feature better arch support.
- Fit. Altra shoes are considered natural running shoes, meaning theyre minimalistic in construction and design. However, they each fit a little differently. When possible, try on a few models in person.
- Durability. While all Altra shoes are durable, customers have found that some styles are more resilient than others.
- Customer reviews. Whether this is your first pair of Altra running shoes or your fifth, youll want to read customer reviews for insight into whether the shoe is true to size and has any potential drawbacks.
Stabilipod And Guiderail Systems
Altra uses two different technologies to address overpronation : StabiliPod and GuideRail. These two systems work together to keep your feet and ankles aligned, ensuring better landings and a reduced risk of pain and injury.
StabiliPod places firmer midsole material in three strategic areas, working with the foots natural stability zones like a tripod to help control the exaggerated foot and ankle motion that causes an inefficient stride.
The GuideRail system works a lot like highway guide rails, gently guiding your foot back on course only when it strays from its most efficient path.

- Balanced Cushioning platform places heels and forefeet the same distance from the ground, which encourages low-impact landings
- GaiterTrap hook-and-loop tab secures your gaiters to your trail shoes to keep dirt and debris out
- Stack height: 25 mm
- MaxTrac outsoles feature a multidirectional lug pattern for grippy traction on a variety of terrain
Who Should Wear Zero Drop Running Shoes
I will never say there is one BEST shoe for every single runner. Though proponents of minimalist and zero drop, would make the argument that they are great for everyone.
You should NOT use them if you have:
- You arent willing to work on your running form
The reason I note these is because a higher heel height in those cases will shorten the amount your tendons need to stretch with each foot fall and it can help reduce pain. Ideally, youd work on those issues and hopefully be able to continue working to a slightly lower heel drop.
Zero drop shoes can be good if:
- You already land under your body with most foot falls
- You like feeling more connected to the ground
- You dont need as much cushion which usually means theyre lighter
- Lower heel to toe drop can help improve things like IT Band Syndrome
There are a number of different zero drop running brands, but in general Ive really found Altra to be at the top of the game and thats why Ive focused more on them in this review.

Hiking Shoes Vs Trail Runners For Hiking
Hiking ShoesHiking shoes, like the Sawtooth II from Oboz, are built like a lighter hiking boot. Their rubber soles are often paired with stiff leather or a leather-mesh combination. Hiking shoes are great for short backpacking trips where you plan to carry a light to medium load.
Trail RunnersEven if you dont consider yourself a cardio king or queen nor plan on sprinting up switchbacks, trail runners are great for hiking. As mentioned earlier, they are built like a sneaker but equipped with special functions to protect your feet from water, roots, and fatigue. Trail runners are popular among thru-hikers and ultralight backpackers for their lighter feel. If you are prone to ankle injuries and/or plan to carry a heavier weight, a proper hiking boot may be a better option.
A Natural Take On Tech
Over the past few years, shoemakers have poured resources into developing newer and better cushioning foams, and Altra is no exception. The company uses two main cushioning materials in its shoes: Ego and Quantic. Ego is the older of the two it debuted in 2016 on the Escalante and King MT. Compared to traditional EVA foam, its formulated to provide a springier feel and more durability. Quantic debuted on the Superior 4, and its main benefit is low weightits a bit lighter than Ego foam. Altra now uses it in several of its models.
Altra has also developed GuideRail and InnovArch, two notable innovations that give runners more support. GuideRail has been around for years , and its a layer of midsole foam that projects up from the footbed along the medial side of the foot. Its designed to keep your foot aligned in the shoe, and helps counter overpronation during your stride. InnovArch, used in the Provision 5, is a layer of mesh material on the footbed that wraps beneath the arch of the foot and connects with the lacing system. It provides a seamless layer of support for your arch and a snug, wrap-around fit.
