Nunn Bush Catalog : Walking In A Century Of Progress
The Century of Progress International Exposition opened in Chicago on June 1, 1933, in celebration of the city’s centennial. Much had changed in Chicago and the nation over the preceding 100 years, and the technological innovations achieved to date were celebrated as the theme of the exposition.
At the Exposition, visitors could tour the many fascinating buildings and exhibits. In the Travel and Transport Building, displays included a new Boeing 247 passenger plane, two Pullman coaches, and America’s first automobile, the Duryea. Visitors could then watch an actual assembly line constructing automobiles at the General Motors building. The massive Graf Zeppelin airship visited from Germany, and the famous Burlington Zephyr streamlined train also arrived at the fair to great acclaim. The Sky Ride, an aerial tramway that allowed visitors to move from one side of the Fair to the other, was the signature attraction of the exposition. Yet, in spite of the many technological marvels on display that emphasized how distance had been conquered by a rapidly advancing civilization, there is no doubt that more than a few of the 48 million visitors to this 424-acre complex realized they were in dire orthopedic straights while engaging in that most pedestrian mode of locomotion: walking.

Milwaukee, Wis. The Wisconsin Historical Society has announced the listing of Nunn-Bush Shoe Company Factory in Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, in the National Register of Historic Places. National Register designation provides access to certain benefits, including qualification for grants and for rehabilitation income tax credits, while it does not restrict private property owners in the use of their property.
The register is the official national list of historic properties in America deemed worthy of preservation and is maintained by the National Park Service in the U.S. Department of the Interior. The Wisconsin Historical Society administers the program within Wisconsin. It includes sites, buildings, structures, objects and districts that are significant in national, state or local history, architecture, archaeology, engineering or culture.

Rubio’s Infamous Boots Were Made In India Not Wisconsin
Florida Sen. Marco Rubio is trying to stamp out criticism from other presidential candidates about his slick, zip-up boots by saying hes giving American business a leg up.
Rubios ankle boots became the subject of Internet scrutiny after he was photographed wearing them in New Hampshire on Jan. 3, 2016.
Pundits and fashioncolumnists commented on them ad nauseam. Rubio drew fire from his GOP rivals for being perhaps a bit too chic for the campaign trail. Some speculated they were to make the 5-foot-10 senator appear taller. Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bushs Right to Rise super PAC made a commercial mocking them.
While Rubio initially called the focus on his footwear “craziness,” hes worked at thinking on his feet. At a Jan. 18 campaign event in Waverly, Iowa, a voter jokingly asked about the boots. Rubio declared his boots, appropriately outfitted with a Cuban heel, are a patriotic choice.
“They sold out of those boots online,” Rubio said. “Theyre made in Wisconsin. Florsheim! You know what that means? That means I did more for American business in one week than Barack Obama did in seven years!”
Hes right that Florsheims website says some sizes of their $135 Duke boots are out of stock, but they should be available by Feb. 1. A Florsheim spokesman told us sales of that style have “increased significantly” since Rubio was shown wearing them.
As for the part about being made in Wisconsin, well, Rubio probably should have watched his step.
Weyco Group Taking Measured Approach To Diversifying Supply Chain Away From China
Long term, Thomas Florsheim Jr. plans for Glendale-based Weyco Group Inc. to around 50% or less of its shoes from China, but he is in no rush to reach that target.
We believe that its in our best interest to move production very slowly, he told analysts on the companys earnings call Wednesday.
Weyco Group designs and markets footwear under the Florsheim, Nunn Bush, Stacy Adams, BGS and Rafters brands. Last year, the company sourced around 70% of its shoes from China, although that number was pushed higher as Weyco sought to bring product in before new tariffs were in place on Sept. 1. The company had $81.3 million in inventories on Sept. 30, up from $60.1 million at the same time in 2018.
In addition to receiving product earlier, the company also negotiated price increases with its wholesale customers and discounts with its suppliers to help offset the tariffs.
Despite the problems a reliance on Chinese suppliers caused last year, Florsheim said the company isnt looking to rapidly change its sourcing. He said the percentage of shoes from China would likely drop to the lower 60s this year and reach into the 50s next year.
Were seeing competitors honestly move production very quickly, like overnight saying we really dont want to be in China anymore and picking up their product and just moving it very quickly to other countries, he said. That is a recipe, in our opinion, for disaster.
