As someone who was fiercely loyal to ASICS shoes for a long time, Saucony is really growing on me. Their robust line of stability shoes has something for everyone, and the Guide 9 is nothing short of that.

I have experience running in the Guide line before. I picked up a pair of the Guide 7s at a race expo and wasnt really that all impressed besides scoring a sweet deal.

It was a standard, middle of the line stability shoe, but it didnt really offer much. When I saw the 8s, I chose to pass because it just looked the same as before.

The 9 is the complete opposite of that. Its been completely redone and is lighter than ever. Thankfully the offset is the same so while the shoe had a complete rebuff, the foundation remains the same.

A Remix On A Classic: The Peregrine 11 St

One might guess that ST stands for Stability or Speed Trainer, but Saucony actually uses it here to designate that this version of its popular trail shoe is tuned for Soft Terrainthough its ride would make those other guesses accurate, too. A wide platform and low drop give this Peregrine its stable feel, an upgrade to premium Pwrrun+ topsole cushioning offers more go-fast energy return, and a forefoot rock plate shields against protruding roots and stones. But youll also find those features on the standard Peregrine model. What sets the ST apart is its muck-loving outsole and upper, which are built for a full send along swampy singletrack.

The toothy lugs are 1.5mm longer, with more spacing between each to shed mud quickly, and the upper is switched to an abrasion-resistant mesh outfitted with quick lacing. To secure the shoe, just cinch the skinny bungee cords and stow them inside the tonguetheres no fiddling with wet bunny ears. Plus, the entire shoe is cloaked in its own mud guard, an outer debris-resistant mesh bolstered by overlays to block seepage. A running shoe is classed as minimal if the heel drop falls lower than 8mm and usually sits closer to 4mm. There are many low heel drop running shoes that have standard road running shoe levels of cushioning. The upper is devoid of a full inner sleeve or forefoot overlays, thus making its regular D width comfortable for most feet shapes. If you find the Ghost 14 narrow, just know that this model also retails in an optional wide and extra wide.

Theres a good reason why the Brooks Ghost is such a successful running shoe. The single-density midsole is very comfortable and smooth a cushioning blend thats excellent for everyday runs.

What If My Heels Slip In Wide Running Shoes

If your heels slip, thats often a sign that your running shoes are too wide. Try going down to a standard width or narrow.

I have to start my review by stating that the FuelCell Rebel V2 in the white and habanero colorway might be the best looking wide shoe ever. Its gorgeous. Dont tell my wife, but Im in love

The engineered mesh upper is super thin and slightly see-through. It contains a lateral N overlay for structure as well as molded collar foam for comfort and a secure fit. The tongue is very thin, but soft, and causes no irritation on the ankle. I was concerned about the lack of a second eyelet for heel lock lacing , but the Rebel V2 didnt slip at all.

I usually have about a thumbs width of space between the front of my running shoes and where my big toe is. In the Rebel V2 I have half a thumbs width. So if your shoes are already tight fitting, you may need to size up, but I didnt need to. Just like with the RC Elite 2 and TC , it feels like my arch is kind of hanging over because of the shape of the last. However, Im extremely happy with the wide fit of the shoe. My midfoot and forefoot dont feel crushed and arent in pain while running.

The FuelCell midsole in the Rebel V2 feels a lot softer and more squishy than the Rebel V1. It has the same squishy feeling that is in the RC Elite 2, but because the Rebel V2 doesnt have a plate, its very flexible and doesnt put as much strain on the feet.

The Standard Peregrine 11 Modelis Anything But Standard

In terms of midsole cushioning, all the Peregrines use the same stuff: Sauconys Pwrrun. The material is a significant upgrade from the brands previous Everun foam, but its not quite as bouncy as the newest Pwrrun PB found on the Endorphin series and the Freedom 4. Recently, Saucony fiddled with the mix of TPU and EVA polymers in the Pwrrun ratio, so the foam does feel more similar to the more responsive Pwrrun+ iteration than before. Still, the standard Pwrrun has a noticeably firmer ride than its plus sibling. The midsole focuses less on cushioning and more on substanceits springy and gives you a great ride, but its not super plush, one tester said. It feels supportive, firm, and purposeful with the right balance of performance and cushion that lasts.

Saucony Guide 9 Sole Unit

The bottom part of the shoe has been completely overhauled, but still stays true to previous models. I first received these shoes after one of the worst blizzards to hit the east coast and I never had any traction issues when running through questionable areas.

The sole unit brings in a new Saucony technology called EVERUN. This replaced the previous Power Grid technology. This tech adds one extra layer of cushioning that is closer to the foot.

This gives a more stable ride throughout as opposed to only being concentrated one part of the foot like the heel that many stability shoes suffer from.

The ride also does not wear down throughout the run, so it will be as strong as it was in the later miles than it is in the beginning. this is HUGE for people doing long distances.

The heel offset is pretty standard with an 8mm offset. During running, my natural striking was hitting right in the middle of the foot, allowing me to launch off from the ball of the foot.
