Its generally accepted that the standard lifespan of road running shoes is somewhere between 300 miles and 500 miles, or around 500-800km if youre that way inclined, and lightweight shoes tend to be somewhere between 250 and 300 miles. So if youre running 20 miles per week, youll probably need to replace them after 4-6 months.

  • One or both shoes no longer stand up straight when placed on a flat surface
  • You feel increased muscle soreness after running

At a minimum, every runner should consider having at least two pairs of their main running shoes that they are actively using at one time and rotate different running shoes between workouts. Your shoes will last longer as your kilometres are spread across more than one pair of shoes.

This could be a sign that you are wearing the wrong size of shoe or the shoes are too narrow in the toe box, particularly if the sole is still showing little wear.

2. Run style

Knowing this arms you with more information when it comes to looking for a better suited running shoe, and choosing one built to sustain your style.

Shoes allow runners to land with a more upright body position and an extended leg, leading to excessive braking forces. These running mechanics seem to play a role in some of the most common running injuries. Long-term everyday use of footwear also leads to a weaker foot and often, a collapsed arch.

Shoes Change Shape As They Wear Out

In one of the few good studies on the subject, Kong, Candelaria, and Smith at the University of Texas at El Paso examined the changes in running mechanics after a group of 24 runners covered 200 miles over the course of their regular training.3

The runners were split into three groups, each of which wore a different shoean air-cushioned shoe , a gel-cushioned shoe , and a spring-cushioned shoe . The results highlight a few important findings.

First, at the initial evaluation of running mechanics , there were no differences between the groups.

This should teach us a thing or two about how shoes can affect running mechanics. But, more to the point, there were only minor changes in running mechanics after the 200 miles of wear on the shoes , and no changes in actual forces measured.

Even though we may reasonably predict that the shoes had lost 20% of their cushioning capacity, there was no change in impact forces!

This should come as no surprise to regular readers of this blog, since weve seen before that the body adapts to various surfaces by changing leg stiffness. The increased stance time that Kong et al. observed hints that the leg becomes more compliant to adapt to the stiffer, thinner worn shoes.

The other findings of Kong et al. are also in line with adaptations associated with running on harder surfaces, like flatter foot placement.

How To Tell When Its Time To Replace Your Running Shoes

Since shoes dont wilt, disappear, or come with a sell-by date, how do you know when its time to retire them? You can look for clues on your run or on the shoes themselves, and supplement with some tracking over time.

Chances are, youll be able to sense that your shoes have broken down before you can see that anythings amiss.

If you start to feel as though youre not getting the performance that you had before, or if youre starting to get new aches and pains, it might be time for a new pair, Dr. Conenello says. Anything from soreness in your heels to knee pain could signal the end of your sneakers blisters or chafing in new places could also be a sign. Many runners notice they have a type of ache that only appears when their shoes are close to their demise, whether thats shin splints or hip soreness, Metzler says.

Finally, you might also just notice that running feelsdifferent. When you get a new shoe, it feels light and lively and bouncy, Metzler says. Older pairs, meanwhile, lack the same spark or pizzazz. The shoe feels dead. And thats coming from that foam being worn out or compressed to the point that it cant be rejuvenated. As a result, your pace may slow even if youre expending the same amount of effort, making running more laborious and less, well, fun.

Why Change Your Running Shoes

In our running shoes, there is a midsole which has the function of providing us cushioning and support. When we run, we apply pressure and it is this midsole that absorbs this pressure. The midsole compresses and returns the energy to us as we begin our next stride. This is the bounce feel we often experience in our shoes when we run. After some time, this midsole loses its ability to absorb this stress and becomes dead. It no longer has this bounce feel, nor the cushioning and support it once had to offer. This can often lead to injuries.

Desjardins says on average, you should replace your shoes after about 800 kilometres. That being said, how long your shoes last depends on their structure and durability. Lightweight shoes with soft soles, such as a racing flat, will wear much faster than a sturdier shoe with firmer soles.

Aches and pains may also indicate that its time for a new pair of shoes. This is because the compressed soles are no longer providing the same level of shock absorption, which increases the stress on your muscles, bones and joints while you run.
