Since hiking shoes do not come cheap, it will be best for you to just take your time when buying. Make sure that you have the full time and concentration before deciding on which shoes you will buy.
Wear Socks and Orthotics when Testing Shoes
When trying out a pair of shoes, make sure to wear them during the testing. If you are using orthotics when hiking, use them together with the socks when trying out the shoes. Always remember to check any discomfort that you feel because it will turn into blisters during the actual hike.
Breaking Them In
A lot of hikers are underestimating the fact that breaking the shoes in before the actual hiking activity can do wonders for the overall performance of the hiking shoes. You can start by using it around the house and use it locally in the neighborhood. You can even do short hikes just to test the efficiency and comfort of the shoes.
Use A Brannock Device
Your shoe size can be measured using a Brannock device from the 1950s. Its measurements, on the other hand, may or may not correspond to the sizing of the brand you want to try on. Furthermore, its sizing ignores the fact that most hikers need a size up for proper toe clearance.
The entire procedure for using the Brannock device is shown below. The Brannock device would essentially give you three measurements for each of your feet:
- heel to toe measurement,
- heel to the ball of foot measurement, and
- width measurement.
Its a good idea to take measurements of both feet so having a bigger foot is not uncommon. These measurements will provide valuable fitting knowledge, especially if youve had problems with fit in the past:
If one foot is larger than the other, the larger foot should be accommodated first.Your heel-to-toe and heel-to-ball measurements should be the same in a stable foot.
You should be able to see what size your feet are.
It might be more difficult to match your foot if your heel-to-toe and heel-to-ball measurements vary. Most of the time, its best to use the larger measurement. .
However, where there is a significant size difference, you can need to experiment to determine the correct combination of right vs. left foot, length vs. flex point, and so on.
Leave Room For Your Toes On An Incline
When you walk up a hill, your toes will move closer to the front of the boot. They shouldnt touch the end of the boot, though.
A good trick is to push your foot as far forward into the boot as you can get it on a flat surface. You should be able to fit your index finger between your heel and the heel of the boot. And you shouldnt feel your toes cramming up against the front.
Cramped toes can cause a lot of issues, including some serious health implications that can keep you off the trails for weeks or months.

Your outsole should be treaded deep enough to guard against avoidable slips and slides on the terrain. Traction is an essential factor while you are on the trail. If you are going on a fast one-day trip, you may not need heavy hiking boots.

What Shape Am I In

For example, youve only been hiking for a few months and you still dont have that much experience but you are progressing quickly as you go hiking regularly. The hikes you do are more and more ambitious and technical. You have never injured your ankle hiking and you are in good physical shape as you like to practice other endurance sports.If this is the case, then you should go for a light, low cut shoe that will give you freer foot movement.
Another example is if you are an experienced hiker and have been hiking for a number of years on mountain trails, but a sprained ankle has meant youve had to take a break for a few months. Did you used to hike in low cut shoes? If you did, then your shoes now lack much needed ankle support. Opt for stable, high cut shoes that will support your ankles. You can get your old shoes back out once you are fully fit again.

Try the following tips:
- Try on men’s shoes and women’s shoes . Not all companies build their shoes on gender-specific lasts but, if they do, those minor differences may be all the tweaking you need to get a perfect fit.
- Ask for a wider width. If the boots you’re trying on don’t come wide or narrow enough, try a pair that offers more widths to choose from.
- If you have small feet, try on children’s boots and shoes. Bonus: They’re often cheaper than adult footwear. Potential downside: Kids’ footwear may not be built to endure as much abuse as boots designed for adults.

First of all, check if the boots fit your feet in length. Most people have one foot longer than another, so you should check for the length of boots with your longer foot.
With the laces loosing up, put your longer foot into the hiking boot and stand up straight. Move your foot forward until your toes touch the end of the boot.
Then ask someone to check if there is room behind your heel. The room behind your heel should fit one finger if the boots are correctly fitted.
Your feet will swell after backpacking for a whole day, therefore, it is important there is room left in your boots.
Another trick to ensure the hiking boots fit in length is by measuring the insoles. Take the insoles out of the boots and stand on them. Check if there is space between your longest toe and the end of the insole. Space should be as wide as the thumb.

- If your heel-to-toe and heel-to-ball measurements are different, your feet may be harder to fit. Most of the time, its best to go with whichever measurement is larger. . However, if theres a big size discrepancy, you may need to experiment to find the right compromise between right foot vs left foot, length vs. flex point, etc.
