In some ways, stores have almost been forced into having raffles. The high demand that happens when a new sneaker is launched has caused stores to come up with innovative ways to combat some of the problems that have been coming up whenever there is a new sneaker launch.
One reason stores hold raffles is because holding a raffle is less dangerous than having people line up for the shoes outside the store.
In the past, some shoes were only being released through retail outlets, and there were no online sales. Sneaker lovers lined up outside stores for days, even camping out in the cold. Violence in the lines was rampant.
Its not just in the US. People all over the world lined up for days outside of stores, and bad behavior soon erupted. People getting pushed and shoved was common. One young man was even shot in the foot for line jumping.
The problems in the lines caused some states to call in armed guards to keep order. People punched each other, and fistfights broke out. There can be many injuries in lines waiting for new sneaker launches.
Controlling who gets to buy the shoes can be hard on customer loyalty when customers feel like they never have a fair chance to buy the pair they want.
How Have Sneaker Bots Evolved
Sneaker bots seriously kicked off in 2012 with the release of the Air Jordan Doernbecher 9.
Nike chose to release the shoe via Twitter. Shoppers could reserve the shoe by being first to direct message the company.
Quickly, people created bots to scour Twitters API and DM Nike after any tweets with terms like reserve now or Doernbecher. With these bots you could send hundreds of DMs in a tenth of a second, says one botmaker.
Humans didnt stand a chance.
At the same time, ecommerce platforms like Shopify appeared, making it easier to sell products online without technical expertise. With the Nike Twitter releases and increased online sneaker sales, botmakers began developing more advanced bots.
Originally, botmakers would sell their sneaker bots to shoppers who paid a premium to improve their chances of snagging sneakers. Whole sub-Reddit threads like /sneakerbots and /shoebots are dedicated to sharing knowledge on how to use bots to score a pair of kicks.
But then the botmakers realized: why sell a one-time product if they can charge a fee for every sneaker release and run the bots themselves?
And so the Add to Cart services were born. Sneakerheads go to a botmakers website, enter their order and payment information, and wait for the bot to do its dirty work. If successful, the sneakerhead pays a fee to the Add to Cart service for the bot-purchased sneakers.

Although I had done my research, I was still in over my head and had a lot to learn. After my biggest month, I made some preventable mistakes that nearly caused me to lose everything I had earned.
First, I ended up with some fakes and it was a mess trying to get my money back from the seller or PayPal.

Before you buy a shoe to resell, you need to make sure itll actually have value on the secondary market. Most shoes would actually fetch less than retail at resell. But a select few will let you double or triple your investment. So what determines the resale price of a shoe? Most sneaker releases nowadays are raffled off. Since a few of todays sneakers are very limited, the stores try to make the release as fair as possible through various raffles, such as the classic “online raffle”, which is usually processed via a form or Instagram. Here you simply enter your data and the desired shoe size and hope that your name will be drawn at random.
However, many stores also organize in-store raffles, which offer locals an even better chance, as you usually have to register in store.
