One would think this is quite trivial but you would not imagine how many people I have fit that put on a pair of oxfords, claiming heel slip and after telling them to tighten the laces, the shoes fit just fine. So, knowing that, it would appear sometimes we need an extra opinion on heel slip, to understand which is acceptable and which is not. Ideally, you would have none, but in a world of different feet, different lasts, and different ideas of a good fit, the heel slip arena can get tricky.
It goes without saying that if in a loafer, oxford, boot, or monkstrap, you tighten up the shoe/boot all the way and your heel falls right out, well that shoe is simply too big. You should never be able to walk out of your shoes. You should never be able to pull them off without undoing them. Monkstraps are not loafers. They are functional. If you treat them like loafers, they are too big. If you dont care, then great!

If your shoe shape does not align with the shape of your foot, it won’t make a difference which size shoe you purchase just chalk it up to the wrong shoe for you and look for another.
Narrow heels of the foot, in particular, can slip out of shoes more often. How do you know whether you have narrow heels? You will see that your heels are a whole lot slimmer, from toe to heel, looking like a triangle shape from heel to toe.
If your foot’s arch height is to blame such as when having flatter feet this can cause a gap at the top of the shoe that can contribute to heel slippage.
Finding shoes that fit snugly enough will usually prevent heels from slipping out of shoes. However, make sure the shoes you buy arent too small, as you can get blisters. Not to mention how shoes that fit incorrectly can also cause cramped toes and offer poor foot support.

Heel slipping is a common curse but preventable. However, the core elements that lead you to experience blisters and pain due to heel slippage include loose shoes with more space, a poorly fitted pair of shoes, hard heel filler, and new shoes.
- Wearing a loose shoe can be tightened by tying the shoelaces tightly or using thick socks. Use cobbler, shoe inserts, or heel grip to ensure perfectly fit shoes.

Why Does My Heel Slip In The Shoe
There are many reasons why, but for purposes of time I will discuss the four main reasons:
SIZE OF SHOE For the most part, your feet are designed to be nearly two widths narrower in the heel than in the forefoot. Should you have been fitted with the wrong size and the forefoot is too wide, that would account for the slippage in the heel.
SHOE CONSTRUCTION Should the sole of the shoe be very stiff, as you go through the walk cycle of heel to toe, the heel of your foot may come up out of the shoe. Should the throat of the shoe be loose, allowing the foot to slide forwards, the heel becomes loose and slippage will occur. Also, if the last of the shoe is less than two widths narrower in the heel, a snug fit will not happen.
FITTED WITH FOOT ORTHOTICS Most foot orthosis or AFOs will generally lift the foot out of the heel enough so as not to grip the foot. A deeper heel counter will be required.
TIGHT CALVES The foot as it goes through the walk cycle of heel to toe must be able to lift the forefoot up so that there is a 10% angle between the forefoot and the leg. Should the calf be extra tight, the forefoot will not be able to bend upwards, causing the heel to lift up off the ground too soon in the walk cycle. This will cause heel slippage in your shoe. Stretching the calf will bring the heel down and stop most of the slippage.
