How Should The Boots Fit Snug Loose Etc

Best Soft Ride Boots For Navicular Disease in Horses

Ideally, we would like the boots to fit snugly with 1/8 or less showing around the outside of the orthotic. The closer the fit is, the better it will work for your horse. Much like peoples shoes, the boot should be the smallest size that isnt too small. Issues can arise if the boots are too large or too small. Boots that are too small will tear out because your horses hoof will rest on the hard plastic and material seam of the boot instead of sinking into the gel orthotic. Boots that are too large will be sloppy on the hoof and can spin around, and there is also potential for the extra material to fold under the hoof as the horse walks, which will lead to a rub-through in the material.

My Horse Has Bar Shoes/ Pour

Yes! Our deep gel orthotic is designed to compress under the weight of your horse and can form to different types of shoes. However, many people are using pads/bars/wedges for a specific reason or to correct a problem and prefer to remove the frog support portion of the orthotic. This is easily done with a belt sander or a hoof knife and does not change the integrity of the overall orthotic.

Why Do I Need To Check The Orthotic Size Inside The Boot When Reordering

Soft-Ride provides narrow orthotics sizes that fit into the standard size boot, so a size 6L boot stamped on outside can be fitted with a standard 6L orthotic or a 6LN orthotic depending on width size measurement provided. You will notice side clips on the sides of the narrow orthotic that take up some of the width of the standard boot size. When reordering, its best to check the size of the orthotic itself to verify if regular size or narrow size. Also, a side clip can be trimmed off if needed to accommodate in-between sizes or growth.

My Boots Are Fine But I Need New Orthotics Can I Just Get Those

Yes, if you just need new orthotics, you can insert them into your current boots Verify the size of the orthotic by looking at the orthotics themselves, not the boots as may be narrows. Orthotics are sold in pairs unless otherwise specified and are $70 for standard turquoise and $90 for specialty orthotics.

First The Laminitis Usage

The reason I am using these boots for Tess is because the insoles cushion and support her. It is an easier way to apply the purple pads. Much easier than duct tape booties.

I have never had a boot go on a sore horse so easily and stay on so well. You spread open the boot and they stay open nice. The horse puts their toe inside and you help them put the foot down evenly. Then just zip zip on the diagonal velcro and youre done!

Another nice benefit are the air holes on the sides. Air is good.

Lessening The Load: The New Softriders By Soft

The makers of Soft-Ride Boots are releasing their latest creation: SoftRiders, a polymer shoe that could be the ticket to added years of soundness on aging, navicular and laminitic horses, also opening the door to added longevity and traction in young performance horses.

Early in 2019, Colorado horse shoer and 8-heeler Taylor Thompson had a few unsound horses in his rotation that he just couldnt get right, no matter what he tried.

One had signs of ringbone, and another had torn her deep flexor tendon and had early signs of navicular, Thompson said. And I had two head horses that had ringbone really bad.

Thompson often works with Greeley, Colorados Joe Stricklin, DVM, also a roper, who had a new solution for Thompson test.

Dr. Stricklin showed me the Soft-Riders, Thompson said. I put them on those two head horses with bad ringbone, and they were back to heading steers in just three days like nothing was wrong.

What Horses Will They Work For

While Thompson is using them on aging horses with soundness issues like laminitis, navicular and ringbone, creator Monty Ruetenik believes in their long-term use on all performance horses.

Theyre really the Holy Grail for young horses, especially those being asked to perform at a high level, Ruetenik said. Shock can really be an issue for horses performing on all types of ground conditions, and the SoftRiders ability to absorb that shock will be a game-changer for increasing longevity in performance horses.

LeMieux Derby ProJump Tendon Open Front Horse Boots

Farriers and veterinarians agree that one of the most common mistakes that is made when purchasing hoof boots is sizing.

Hoof boot manufacturers like Texas-based Soft-Ride, offer tools and advice to help take the guesswork out of choosing the correct size for hoof care applications.

Soft-Ride boots, which were developed by Monty Ruetenik, offer a therapeutic design with a thick gel orthotic inside that enables the horse to find its own most comfortable position while providing sole support. The hoof sinks into the gel and the horse is able to shift its weight, thereby allowing the sole of the hoof to unload. The Soft Ride Boot is also commonly used when hauling horses in metal shoes to provide additional protection and support.

How Long Can A Horse Wear The Boots Without Taking Them Off

The boots are designed to be worn continuously if needed except when doing recommended daily maintenance. They have openings on the sides to allow air flow and venting. This also means that debris can enter the boots, so they should be taken off once a day or two and cleaned out. Pull orthotic from boot and brush all debris out. Build up of debris can push hoof to the side or back and cause premature wear. When your horse is first acclimating in the boots you should keep him in a fairly confined area because they can throw/mess with them at the beginning if they get frisky until acclimated to the boots.

Trailering, stall and small paddock turnout is recommended. Riding, exercise and pasture use is not a specified use and not recommended as premature wear or loss is possible.

If youve strolled around the parking lot at a barrel race, team roping or rodeo lately, youve probably seen a trailer or two with horses sporting Soft-Ride Equine Comfort Boots instead of standing flat on the ground. You might have even rolled your eyes and thought those folks dont know that horses have stood around for centuries without cushioned feetbut youd be wrong.

    BASIC ANATOMY

A horses frog is a critical part of the animals circulatory system. The blood flows down the horses leg into the digital cushion, a part of the inner hoof above the frog, which contains a network of blood vessels. The horses weight then compresses the frog on the ground, squeezing the blood out of the digital cushion, and pushing it back up the horses legsknown as hemodynamics. Much like a human standing on hard ground, a horse moves his weight back and forth from leg to leg, loading and unloading his weight, to pump his blood, which decreases inflammation that causes pain.

    BACK TO NATURE

As horses evolved in nature, their frogs were constantly in contact with the ground, usually in soft, sandy soil. That soil filled the nooks of a horses hooves, naturally pumping the frog and digital cushion. For millennia, that is how the horses feet and legs stayed healthy.
