Nevertheless, we’d highly recommend getting a pair if you have the chance, as the 4DFWD represents the next step in running shoe evolution.
As well as that and in line with Adidas’ efforts to reduce plastic waste, the 4DFWD is not a bad choice for environmentally conscious runners. The shoe reduces pronation with the help of two pieces of foam in the heel area that coax a foot into position. Runners World recommends it for runners with flat feet, noting, however, that the pronation mitigation is subtle enough to work well for a variety of runners. We found that to be true. The shoe has a 12-mm drop , but its equal to that of the Ghost 14. The Adrenaline GTS 21 has a roomy toe box with enough stretch to give toes wiggle room on a run. The shoes upper is supportive, and its laces tie securely and are plenty long enough to facilitate heel-lock lacing.

Is It Worth Buying Expensive Running Shoes
Just because a pair of running shoes is expensive, that doesn’t mean they are good. That said, cheap running shoes seldom deliver a running experience you might expect from decent running footwear.

How To Find The Right Fit
Comfort is, of course, subjective. However, there are some general guidelines you can use to help ensure that a pair of running shoes fits you correctly:
Be flexible about sizing: Common running-shoe advice is to buy a shoe thats a half-size or even a full size up from your street-shoe size, to account for foot swelling while you run. However, after talking to brand representatives and industry experts, we learned that shoe sizing is more of an art than a science. Shoes are typically designed around whats called a lasta three-dimensional form that mimics the shape of a human foot, created in a sample size based on the size scale of the companys country of origin . From there, the additional sizes are scaled, and international size conversions are marked based on the companies proprietary charts. Therefore, every brands sizes are a little different. The bottom line: Use your normal running-shoe size as a starting point, but dont be shy about sizing up to find your best fit.

Shoe Comfort And Performance
Whats more, it appears that comfortable shoes may increase performance too! A study in 2009, again by Benno Niggs research group4, investigated whether more comfortable shoes led to better running economya measure of how much energy a particular runner needs to maintain a given pace. Ten male runners evaluated five different pairs of shoes, ranking them from most comfortable to least comfortable. The men subsequently underwent a treadmill test to determine their running economy in the most and least-comfortable shoes. The result? A 0.7% increase in running economy in the most comfortable shoe vs. the least comfortable shoe. This might not sound like much, but thats well over a minute off your marathonjust by swapping out shoes! Whats more, this study also controlled for the weight of the shoes, which has been shown to affect performance, and it even obscured the appearance of the shoes from the subjects so flashy designs wouldnt deceive them. However, this study was quite small compared to the others weve seen, and all ten subjects happened to rank the same shoe as the most comfortable, so this result isnt a sure bet.
Low Drop Or Zero Drop Running Shoes
A running shoe drop, or heel-to-toe offset, is the difference, measured in millimiters between the height of the shoe sole in the heel area vs the height of the sole in the toe area. For reference, traditional running shoes usually have an offset of 12mm. Low drop are considered shoes with a drop between zero and 4mm. Everything in between is also possible.
The logic is: shoes with a higher heel will favor heel strike during running, while shoes with a zero or low drop will favor a more forefoot or midfoot running gait. It is largely a matter of preference, but running on your toes requires a completely different set of muscle activation and switching from one kind of shoe to the other without proper conditioning and a very gradual approach might result in injury.

The only downsides we could find here were that the EVA midsole isnt the plushest, and if youre looking for that classic Hoka cushion, you might find it a little on the harder side. That said, if youre looking for an everyday running shoe thats snappier than say, the Nike Pegasus or Ghost 14, this is a brilliant choice.

Once upon a half-marathon, I wore cheap running shoes and ended up with a naked toe. My right big toe became toenail-less, that is, because I wore shoes that I knew didn’t fit me properly. I walked around with only nine toenails for months, during sandal season of course, and vowed to never buy ill-fitting shoes again for any reason, not even if they were 50% off. For the unacquainted, running shoes and trail running shoes can look pretty similar: similar enough to think they are interchangeable and work well on both the road and the trail.
