BUTTON your shoe, girls. The most directional style for autumn/winter 1998/99 is the Mary Jane, this time in a flat, pointy-toed incarnation. What defines this dainty style is the “bar” – a single-buttoned strap across the top of the foot which dates back to the turn of the century. The name comes from the shoes worn by Mary Jane, a character from the Buster Brown comic strip which first appeared in the New York Herald in 1902. Little girls everywhere clamoured for them, and until the late Fifties they were a must-have style for both boys and girls.

Adults weren’t inured to their charms either. The bar shoes worn for dancing in the Twenties were sophisticated, ornate affairs, in silk satins, often hand-painted in reds, blues and golds, with plainer styles for daywear. Then, in 1934, Shirley Temple skipped across the screen wearing white Mary Janes in Baby Takes a Bow, and nearly 30 years later John Kennedy Jr saluted his dead father’s casket in a pair.

The History Of Mary Jane Shoes

Over the years weve seen Mary Jane shoes adopted by all kinds of subcultures, but lets talk about their origin first.

The Mary Jane design was first popularized as a childrens shoe in the early 20th century, worn by both boys and girls. The design came first, of course, with many unisex shoes throughout history displaying some elements from it, while the name came second.

The shoes were named after one of the main characters in the Buster Brown comic strip. The comic followed the story of Buster Brown, a little boy who liked to play tricks, and his sweetheart, Mary Jane. Both children wore Mary Jane shoes in the comic, but ultimately the girl became the namesake for the shoes.

In the 1920s we start seeing Mary Jane shoes for adults, particularly as a dancing shoe for women. These low Mary Jane heels were perfect for the wild dancing styles of the swinging 20s because they held the foot securely and kept it protected. Even during this time, however, the shoes still remained a childhood staple, with Shirley Temple wearing them in her performances in the 30s.

In the 1960s Mary Jane shoes became associated with high fashion and the mod styles, with Twiggy wearing them for fashion shoots and making them popular.

Its interesting to note that across these decades Mary Jane shoes kept coming back with similar silhouettes: the rounded-toe Mary Janes were consistently paired with short, straight-waist dresses, embodying a style that is at once youthful yet mature.

Emerald Mary Jane Heels

We cant think of a pair of shoes more opulent than these emerald-colored velvet Mary Jane platforms. The blocky heel is 4 inches high and covered in shiny rhinestones, as is the brooch on the strap. History Of Mary Jane Shoes

Mary Jane Shoes

Mary Jane shoes rose in popularity during the early 20th century when they were originally worn by children of both sexes. The shoes get their name from the fictitious character invented by the Brown Shoe Company in the early 20th century. The character was created to complement their boys brand, Buster Brown. It wasnt until the 1930s that Mary Janes became associated with young girls as boys began to sport oxfords instead.

Boys typically wore Mary Jane shoes with knee high socks while girls wore them with socks or pantyhose. However, both sexes would occasionally wear them alone. During the 1940s, Mary Jane shoes swept across Europe and America in popularity. As they grew in popularity, the shoes became a popular shoe choice for women of all ages.

Today, Mary Jane shoes adhere to their original construction with their iconic single strap around the instep. You can still find modern Mary Jane shoes reserved for school uniforms and semi-formal events. There is even a variety of Orthopedic Mary Janes that are ideal for every day wear for both children and adults. Throughout their history, Mary Jane shoes remain to be a classic staple of childhood, especially when it comes to little girls.

What Are Mary Jane Shoes Made Of

Original Mary Jane shoes were made out of black leather or patent leather that gave them their glossy look. The uppers are typically clean, but floral perforations may be made to the seam or strap for an added pop.

Today, varying Mary Jane styles can be made out of cotton, suede, or other durable materials. The outsole can be made from a smooth leather, metal if used for tap dancing, or rubber for greater traction control.

Why Are They Called Mary Janes

The name was coined after the signature shoes worn by Mary Jane, a character in the Buster Brown comic strip which was popular in America in the 1900s. Originally worn as a formal shoe by children, over the course of the last century Mary Jane shoes have grown to become an essential shoe amongst women. Although considered a traditional shoe, their style is often reinvented to suit modern trends, so look out for sporty trainers with elastic straps, bright coloured uppers, and block heels for a fun and fancy alternative to the classic shoes.

The History Of The Mary Jane

The Mary Jane shoe. Where would Livie & Luca be without her? Shes highly adaptable, perfectly practical and oh so sweet. Her trademark is the bar or strap that goes over the top of the foot and was traditionally fastened with a buckle or button. Now we have velcro which makes the MJ even more of a winner.

Where did she come from?

Before there were ‘Mary Janes’, they were called bar shoes and were worn by children in the late 19th and early 20th century. Surprisingly, they were worn more commonly by boys than girls.

In 1904, bar shoes became known as Mary Janes when the Brown Shoe Company of Missouri named their bar shoes after the mischievous cartoon character Buster Brown and his sweetheart Mary Jane.

The Brown Shoe Company realized the marketing benefits of commercially associating themselves with Buster Brown and paid $200 to cartoonist R.F. Outcoult for licensing rights. They also bought the rights for Busters sweetheart Mary Jane, whose character was based on the cartoonists daughter of the same name!

  • They were a common pairing with the 1920s flapper dresses.
  • In 1934, a young Shirley Temple wore white Mary Janes in the movie Baby Takes a Bow.
  • In the 1960s, designer Mary Quant put model Twiggy in a pair, thereafter making them a fashion staple not only for kids but for women too.

So why are most of our girls shoes Mary Janes?

Check out some of our favorite Mary Janes this season — easy to see that its a cute, practical style made to last!
