Make It Your Own With Nikeid Lunar Control 4

Nikes brand new Lunar Control 4 shoes is one of the boldest cats on the block. I meana huge swoosh on the toe. Who does that?

Half of the NFLmaybe more, but thats not the point. For some golfers, a group often bound, nayrestricted by tradition, Nikes in-your-face approach to 2016 has been a bit too overt. What can I tell you, the Covert days are over. This is how Nike does golf.

It time for you to make a choice. You can rage against the new style, or you can make it your own.

How To Start Your Own Sneaker Brand

I designed my own Nike football boots!

If you want to start a footwear brand and compete with Nike or Adidas, youll need the funding of a small country and an army, says No One founder and designer Mark Gainor sitting in a small studio lined with cobbler tools, shoe-making machines, and work benches in Venice, California.

The 42-year-old Gainor, whos spent over a decade in the footwear industry working for Adidas, Gourmet, and Native, knows a thing or two about designing, manufacturing, and marketing sneakers, and now hes setting out on his own to bring handmade shoes to the public one pair at a time. But hes not the only person whos living the dream of owning their own sneaker brand. Theres been a rise in smaller footwear brands recently that straddle the line between sportswear and high fashion, including No One, Sonra, and John Geigers eponymous label. Whats it like launching your own sneaker brand? What are some of the challenges these upstart companies face? We spoke to the brains behind some of these rising companies to find out.

The thought of having your own shoe — designing it from start to finish — has likely crossed everyones mind who obsesses about sneakers, but it takes more than just a piqued interest in shoes to bring a piece of footwear to life. Theres sketching the design, sourcing the materials, creating the last , finding a place to manufacture the product, and then selling it to the public. And a lot of money.

Most customizers are either experienced artists, fashion fanatics, savvy entrepreneurs or all three, Solomon said. “A majority of people are just one or two artists working out of their garage or basement doing one or two at a time just as a side hustle or hobby,” he told CBS MoneyWatch.

Veteran customizers have mastered the art of wiping an acrylic solution across a fresh shoe to strip away the protective coating, then dipping their brush into a specialized leather paint to recolor different parts of the shoe. For accomplished artists like Hernandez, a finished pair usually takes about 72 hours, but more intricate designs can take considerably longer.

“The longest I’ve worked on a shoe was a month,” Hernandez said, adding, “I’m a one-man factory right now.”

Some clients ask for a simple recoloring of a couple spots on the shoe, which will set them back roughly $100. But more elaborate requests can carry a price tag of $10,000 or more.

Social media has been key in fostering interest in shoe customizing, with online communities to fit every level of interest and experience. Customizers post pictures of their latest designs, often prompting passionate debate by fans, while fellow artists compare notes on technique.

Nike Id: Design Your Own Shoes

I mentioned earlier that I always have problems with finding shoes, because one foot is larger than the other. At the time I discovered that Nike has a cool service, which lets you customize your shoes : Nike iD. The idea is that you can specify the colors of your shoes yourself and with some designs this gives you a lot of choice. What is great though is that with some designs you can even specify different shoe sizes for each foot: perfect!

For woman theyve got 33 different designs which you can choose from, for men 67 different types. This also includes though multiple type of football shoes and basketball shoes for the men, while woman for instance only have one choice of football shoe. Im not complaining though, I dont like football.

The coolest part of the customization choices is that you can put your iD on them. For the shoes, this means you can let them stitch your name or a short phrase on the tongues of the shoes . Beside the shoes, you can also customize bags and watches. Guys can also customize clothing, but they only have a couple of tight running T-shirts. I would like to see some normal girly sport clothes that I can customize myself, but I guess well have to wait for that.

Why Nike Really Lets You Design Your Own Sneakers

When we lauded Nike in our first Worlds Most Innovative Companies issue in 2008, it was in part because of Nike iD, a then-revolutionary way for its customers to imprint personalized designs onto Nike sneakers. The inclusion of iD studios in Niketown stores pointed toward the increasing theatricality required in retail, while iD capability on nike.com reflected the explosive potential of digital commerce.

What we didnt explicitly mentionbut should havewas the consumer side of the equation: How iD tapped into customers desire to create their own products. Because in todays marketplace, each of us has become a creator, in ways that few fully appreciated a decade ago.

Customers are able to adjust the mesh underlays on the upper to their liking in a variety of shades as well as a Wavey texture. To complement, you can also play around with the striped overlays to create either a tonal or contrasting effect. Additional elements of the model that are customizable include bases and heels in colors like Arctic Punch and Green Glow.

You can head to Nikes website to create your very own Air Max 97. Each pair will set you back $190 USD.

Create And Order Personalized Nike Sneakers Straight From Your Iphone

Sportswear giant Nike has a nifty application in the App Store that allows you to create custom sneakers and order them straight away, with just a couple of taps. The app is in fact a mobile extension of NIKEiD, a program that allows customer to order personalized Nike shoes straight from the manufacturer. And an excellent extension it is.

The free app has been available on the App Store since the beginning of this month, but surprisingly there hasnt been a lot of coverage about it. Even despite this excellent video about it .

The software program allows you to select flashy looking sneakers that were custom designed by others and purchase them straight away, but theres a lot more to it than that. For instance, you can dive into your photo library and select any image, after which the NIKEiD iPhone app will automatically detect which colors are in them and let you choose two for your own custom shoe. Or you can just use the Color Picker to select two colors you like.

Evidently, you can filter the results even more based on your specific needs . Using the My Locker feature you can also save your favorite designs and access those youve customized on the NIKEiD website. Once youve selected a custom design you like, you can shake your iPhone to shuffle the colors, but you also get some options to genuinely personalize sneakers with your name, a custom logo or whatever you like.

Did I mention you can buy designs straight from the app?

Kudos, Nike, kudos.

Nike Air Troupe Design Battle

When Nike launched a brand new shoe specifically designed for hip hop dancers. This campaign was designed to promote both Nike By You and the new shoe. Nike Air Force 1 Tear Away

Not quite as many possibilities, but just as much fun and experience offers the Nike Air Force 1 Tear Away, which is available in various colorways to cover. What is behind it we show you here.

This is a Nike Air Force 1 with multiple layers of fabric. You can accordingly separate the upper white fabric layer and have another color underneath.

The fact that you can decide which upper layer you leave on and which you take off, results in different colorways. Here is a review of the sneaker.

Of course, one advantage is that you can peel off the white layer if it looks too ‘used’ or is just very dirty. The Nike Air Force 1 Tear Away is still available at these retailers:

In addition, a customizing set is needed. Here I recommend the Angelus Beginner Set, available at sneaker-factory:

Nike Cracking Down On People Customizing Its Sneakers But Is It Shooting Itself In The Foot

Kino Hernandez and one of his close friends went into business together last year customizing sneakers and selling them online. A few weeks into the operation, his friend bailed but Hernandez decided to forge ahead. “It was about three months in and that’s when I started to get orders and I’m not talking about local orders,” the Salem County, New Jersey, resident said. “I was getting my orders from like California and Las Vegas.”

Adding colors and designs to shoes in recent months has netted Hernandez about $10,000 in income, he estimates. For Hernandez, the shoe-customizing business lets him generate income while working part-time as well as allowing him to flex his talents as an artist an ideal work-life balance, he said. But a lawsuit from Nike threatens that livelihood, not just for Hernandez but for countless other footwear customizers.

The suit, filed last month in California, accuses Drip Creationz one of the largest shoe customizing companies in the world of deconstructing Nike shoes, adding new material to them and reselling them for much more than regular retail price. That violates trademark and copyright laws, Nike lawyers said.

“Our goal is to help ensure consumers are able to buy our products that are both authentic and authorized by us and there is no confusion for consumers,” Nike said in an email to CBS MoneyWatch. “None of the items sold by Drip Creationz are authorized Nike Inc. products.”
