Why Are Shoe Sizes As They Are

How To BEST Measure Shoe Size [Foot Size & Width] Kids & Adults!

Seemingly arbitrary, there is a crazy logic behind the numbers assigned to different shoe sizes.

During the reign of Englands Edward II , certain measurements became standardized. Most pertinent to the discussion at hand:

Three barley-corns, round and dry, make an inch, twelve inches a foot, three feet a yard , five and a half yards a perch, and forty perches in length and four in breadth an acre.

Although strange to us today, Edward didnt pull the idea of using a barley-corn for measuring things out of his bonnet. Rather, this had been a tried and true method of measurement and a cornerstone of global trade as far back as the second millennia BC. For example, in ancient Levant, 6 barley-corn were used to denote one Assbaa and 32 Assbaas equaled a cubit .

Edwards only real contribution here was to set three barley-corn as an official standard for the inch in response to pressure from tradesmen and the like who were fed up with the conflicting measurement standards of the day. For instance, the Welsh foot at the time was considered to be 27 barleycorn while the Saxon foot was 39 barleycorn. Setting the standard at 36 barleycorn to a foot partially solved the problem, though there was still some potential variance based on the size of the physical barley-corn.

In the UK, shoe sizes follow a similar method of computation, except that the constant is 23, and it is the same for men and women.

Kids’ Shoe Sizes By The Numbers

Shopping for kids shoes doesnt seem like it should be overly difficult, but, unfortunately, figuring out kids shoe sizes can often be a confounding process. To help clear things up, here are the most important things to understand about kids shoe sizes:

Toddlers sizes run from 013: The smallest sizes in this range are tiny baby shoes, but the larger sizes often fit kids who are 4 or 5 years old or even older. Important: These shoes are often marked with T for toddler up to size 7 . Sizes 813 are typically marked with Kids .

Bigger kids sizes run from 17 : Heres where lots of parents get tripped up. Shoes for bigger kids start at size 1 and run up to 7, creating the confusing fact that a size 1 shoe is the next size up from a size 13 shoe . Sometimes shoe brands will help you out by having their 17 toddler sizes marked with T and their other sizes designated as Kids. Thats how you tell little toddler shoes from kids’ shoes even if they have the same number. For example, if you see a shoe thats available in size 5 Kids, you know thats the bigger kids’ 5, not a toddlers’ 5.

Not all brands and retailers use the same language:

How Often Do Runners Wear The Wrong Size Shoeand Why

About three-fourths of the people Grays lab tests are wearing the wrong size shoe, mostly too smallby anywhere from a half-size to two sizes. Bowersock, too, frequently sees new customers wearing ill-fitting kicks. Either theyve become accustomed to the improper size or theyve been uncomfortable for a while and never could really identify the source of the issue, she says.

Its not that runners are dim or masochisticjust that sizing is confusing. Shoes work more like running apparel than bras theres no standard guideline for what sizing numbers mean, Gray says. So a size 10 in a Brooks Adrenaline GTS could be very different from a size 10 Nike Pegasus. Whats worse, running shoe sizes arent even always consistent within brands, meaning one model fits differently than another even if they come in the same kind of box.

Sizes can shift, too, when a company releases a new version of shoe. Sometimes it doesn’t fit the same because the material changes or how they did the construction of the forefoot changesand every time they change the forefoot, you can change the length of the shoe, Vincent says.

In some cases, shoes in wider widthsmarked with letter from D onward for women, or E onward for menhave the same size midsole but merely add extra fabric. However, other companies add extra room to the footbed to accommodate feet that are thicker front to back, Vincent says.

Men’s Shoe Size Guide

Please use our men’s shoe size guide to help determine what size shoe best fits your foot. Our shoe sizing guide shows the converted measurements from US sizing to UK and EU sizes. We have also included measurements in both inches and centimeters. Please note that the measurements in centimeters and inches refer to the size of the shoe, not the size of the foot inside of the shoe. That said, please allow a few millimeters of clearance between the shoe measurement and your foot measurement to ensure the shoes will fit properly.

Our shoes are of a medium width. For gentlemen who wear a wide width shoe, we recommend sizing up a half size. For instance, if a gentleman wears a 10.0E, we recommend ordering a 10.5 from our selection. Unfortunately, we have found that our shoes do not fit men who wear a EE or EEE width shoe.

For women’s shoes, please refer to the inches and centimeter measurements to best determine shoe size. Typically, there is a two size difference between men’s and women’s shoes. For instance, if a lady wears a size 8.0 in women’s sizes she would wear a 6.0 in men’s shoes.

Every child’s feet grow differently and at different times. In fact, your child’s feet could be smaller or larger than the recommended size for her or his age. That’s why it’s best to get your childs feet measured every few months.

To measure your childs feet at home, download our FOOT MEASURING TOOL or use a ruler or tape measure and measure your child’s feet. Make sure that each foot is fully extended and double check that your childs toes arent curled.

For the length, measure from the heel to the longest toe. Dont worry if you end up with slightly different measurements: children often have size variations between their feet. Using the longest foot, choose a size from the charts below.

Please note, our size recommendation will be slightly larger than your child’s foot to provide room for healthy foot growth and for longer usage. If you find yourself debating between two sizes, always opt for the larger of the two, and if your childs feet are particularly chubby consider sizing up based on their measurements

Please Note: Certain older styles have different sizing. It is best to use the sizing chart on the actual product page to determine the best size for your child.

Putting It In Writing

Interestingly, the first description of a modern shoe sizing system in Britain used quarter-inch increments rather than those of one-third inch. The first recorded description of a system can be found in The Academy of Armoury and Blazon, published in 1688 by genealogist Randle Holme.

He wrote: “The size of a shooe is the measure of its length which is in Children divided into 13 parts and in Men and Women into 15 parts the first of these being five inches long before it be taken for a size what the shooe exceeds that length, every fourth part of an inch is taken for a size 1,2,3 and so forwards to 12 which is called the Boys or Girls thirteens, or the short thirteens, and contains in length 8 inches and a quarter, from which measure of 8 inches and a quarter the Size of Men and Women, called the long size or Mans size begins at 1,2,3 etc. to the number 15, each size being the fourth part of an inch as aforesaid, so that a Shooe of the long fifteens is in length 12 inches just.”

This highlights that some shoemakers were producing sizes based on one barleycorn one-third of an inch increments while others were sizing their shoes every quarter inch.

What Happens When You Wear The Wrong Size Running Shoes

Wear shoes that are too short, and your toes can butt up against the front. This contributes to the bane of runners existence, black and missing toenails, says Vincent.

This contact can also damage toe ligaments and the metatarsals, leading to deformities like hammer toes, he says. Over time, you can also develop Freibergs infractiona stress fracture of the second metatarsalfrom repeated impact.

Plus, squeezing your toes together too tightly forces the muscles of your foot out of alignment, Gray says. As a result, you might feel foot fatigue and develop pain in your arches or bunions.

At the front of your ankle, theres a bundle of nerves, tendons, and blood vessels, Vincent says. Theyre secured by a tight band of tissue, but shoes that fit too snugly can compress them, causing pain on the top of your foot or numbness and tingling throughout them.

Going too big, meanwhile, means your foot shifts around in your shoe. If a shoe doesnt lock down over your navicular bone, your foot can move back and forth with each step. The shear stress of shifting shoes and bunching socks against skin creates blisters, Vincent says. Plus, you can also wind up with bruised toes and toenails this way as your foot bangs into the front of the shoe with each slide, Gray says.

* Checking For Comfort *

Babies and their feet grow quickly, and parents should make sure that their shoes are growing right along with them. Signs that its time for a larger size include your child frequently removing one or both shoes, teetering, frequent tripping, and dragging toes. You may even notice red marks and impressions on their feet. Whether youre noticing some of these signsor its simply been a few months since your childs last measurementyou can easily test the comfort of their shoes.

Shoe Sizes: What Do They Mean

Infants begin at size 1 and go up to 10. Junior sizes start at 10 1/2 and continue to 13 1/2, with the next following size being size 1 and continuing to size 6. Women’s sizes usually begin at size 5 and go to size 12 Men’s sizes begin at size 6 1/2 and usually go up to size 14 or 15. In some special cases, you can find men’s sizes up to size 22.

How do international shoe sizes compare to shoe sizes in the United States?

Sizes in the United Kingdom are usually 1/2 smaller in number than a United States size. For example, a size 12 in the United States may be a size 11 1/2 under the United Kingdom sizing system. However, a United Kingdom size can also be 1 size smaller than a United States size. A lot of the difference depends on who manufactures the shoes. There are other shoe sizing systems as well that use larger numbers than the numbers used for United States sizes. Another sizing scheme uses the metric system to measure foot sizes. This system uses centimeters to calculate shoe sizes . See our shoe sizing charts for more details.

When To Stop Using A Baby Swing

So, how long can a baby use a swing? While there is no set time limit, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that you only allow your baby to spend 30 minutes on the swing at one time. Whats more, you should only use your baby swing twice a day. The AAP further notes that allowing your baby to swing in a prone position for extended periods can lead your baby to develop a flat spot on the back of their head.

Always make sure that your baby is within the weight limit of a certain baby swing. Many parents neglect to take their babys growth into account and make the mistake of using the same baby swing for years. If your baby is too heavy for the swing, the arms might bend or break, or the whole swing might topple over and injure your baby.

Finally, you should never leave your baby to sleep in their baby swing unattended. Once they have fallen asleep, you should take them out and place them in a safer sleeping area, such as their crib. Your babys prone position while on a baby swing can lead your baby to slump forward or slouch down and cause Sudden Infant Death Syndrome .

How Do I Make Sure To Get The Right Size

To measure your feet:

  • Get a blank piece of paper, a pencil and a tape measure.
  • Stand with one foot on the piece of paper, and have most of your weight on your foot to simulate walking.
  • Holding the pencil perfectly vertical and perpendicular to the paper, mark a line at the back of your heel and at the tip of your longest toe. Also mark a line along each side of the widest part of your foot.
  • Measure length and width to the nearest 16th inch and subtract .20 to .25 inches, or .50 centimetres, to account for the width of the pencil.
  • Find your corresponding size in the charts below.
  • A couple of tips to get the perfect fit:

    • Measure your feet later in the day as feet normally swell and can become up to half a size bigger in the evening.
    • Measure both feet and use the measurements of the biggest foot. Many people have feet that are different sizes.
    • Wear the same type of socks you will generally be wearing on the job when you measure your feet.

Here are some general guidelines to assess fit once youve received your new boots:

    • Try on new boots towards the end of the day.
    • Walk around in a clean environment for a couple of hours to make sure the boots are comfortable.
    • Try boots on both feet, as many people have feet that are different sizes.
    • Boots should fit snugly around the heel and ankle when laced.
    • The inner side of the boot should be straight from the heel to the end of the big toe.
    • The boot should grip the heel firmly.

    How Baby Shoe Sizing Works

    printable kids shoe size chart

Baby shoe sizes are often grouped by age. For example, you might see shoes for ages “0-6 months” or “6-9 months.” While this can be helpful, they are meant to be a starting point in your sizing journey. No two baby’s feet are the same , and there is no universal standard for age-based sizing.

Use age guidelines to pick a size to start with, but the safest choice is to measure your child’s foot so that you know exactly what size baby shoes they need.

How To Determine If You Need Wide Width Shoes

If you frequently try on shoes that fit great length-wise but feel cramped in the sides, its a pretty clear sign you may need wide width shoes. Moving to a longer length shoe is a common band-aid fix. It will give you a bit of extra width, but it will be a clumsy fit with extra space in either the heel or the toe box. This is bad for a few reasons – it can cause chafing or blisters, alter your gait and even lead to tripping. Its always best to find a pair of shoes that fit correctly.

Another method of checking your foot width is using the Brannock Device, a tool used to professionally measure feet. While the Brannock Device is most commonly used to measure foot length, it also has a slider to measure foot width. Learn more about using the Brannock Device, and download our printable version.

How To Make Sure The Fit Is Correct

Once you’ve tried on your new baby shoes, you will want to double-check that all that measuring paid off. Here are a few mom tested and approved ways to confirm a perfect fit:

    Visual Check

The baby shoes should appear snug and you shouldn’t see them leaving any marks on your child’s feet.

    Toe Test

From your baby’s big toe, measure to the tip of the shoe. The longest toe should be between the width of your pinkie and the width of your thumb from the tip of the shoe. Any longer than that and they might trip any less than that and they might be too snug .

This will also depend on the type of shoe, as materials vary. Moccasins are commonly made of leather and will be sturdier than say softer baby booties. The bottom line is that you want to make sure your child’s foot length isn’t restricted by their new baby shoes. If they feel too tight, they probably are !

    Test for Width

You should be able to pinch some of the material between your fingers at the widest point. If you can’t do this, then they are too tight. The great thing about soft sole shoes like baby moccasins is that they stretch to fit the width of your child’s feet. Moccs are perfect for both skinny feet and those larger babies who have what we in our family call “Flintstone Feet.”

    Pinkie Test

Slide your pinkie between your baby’s heel and the back of the shoe. Your finger should fit without extra room for the best fit.
