Does Shoe Width Increase With Shoe Size
As a rule, the bigger a foot is, the wider it tends to bealthough this isnt the case for everyone.
Shoe length and width are proportional to standard sizing, which means, larger shoes run wider and smaller shoes run narrower.
This can create minor issues for people with long, narrow feet or short, wider feet. However, you should be able to find a fitting width to suit your feet giving the wide range of options available.
Heres a helpful video that illustrates how the width of shoes can differ.
Shoe Width Ranges By Shoe Size
As a general rule, larger shoe sizes are wider, while smaller shoe sizes run narrower. But you don’t want to settle for shoes that are either too long or too short just to obtain the proper width. When shopping online, first measure your feet by tracing around each one, and then measuring the widest point with a ruler. Match that up to an online chart that shows the usual widths of men’s shoes for each given shoe size. Once you have the numbers and letters correct for your personal size, navigate back to your shoe manufacturer’s site and make your purchase. Make sure to convert your American shoe size to an international size by using a men’s international shoe size conversion chart before purchasing a shoe made in Europe or overseas.
Common Shoe Sizing Mistakes To Avoid
If you follow the tips above, and make sure to use a size chart from the brand you’re shopping with, you shouldn’t have any problems selecting the perfect size shoes for your baby’s feet. Here are a few “gotchas” to make sure to avoid…
Try to avoid hand-me-downs while your little one is still mastering motor skills. Shoes mold to the child’s foot through use, and hand-me-down shoes will be molded to the original wearer’s foot. This could cause irritation in places where the shoe rubs against the foot, and might even cause them to shift their weight incorrectly while walking.
Keeping an eye on foot size
They grow up so fast, and in the blink of an eye they will need to size-up about every 3-4 months. Monitor that growth with regular checks every couple months to make sure they don’t start to outgrow the shoes. It helps to set a reminder on your phone so you remember to check.
If your little starts taking shoes off, hobbling around, or rubbing their feet, those are late signs that they’ve outgrown their shoes and need a new pair quickly!
If you have done all the calculations and find your baby between sizes, go with the larger size. A little extra room to grow is a good thing.

Difference Between Mens And Womens Widths
Men, in general, have wider feet compared to women. This is why charts are based on gender.
A is generally only used in womens sizes, whereas EEE and above are predominantly found in mens widths. However, many brands are changing this to accommodate women with wider feet.
As we discussed at the beginning of the article, a D is classed as Medium for men but Wide for women.
How Wide Is A Narrow Width
The width of a shoe is directly proportional to the length, which means when the shoe size increases the width is also increase.
The narrow width is measured between 2.8 inches to 4.2 inches. The womens narrow width starts from 2.65 inches to 3.55 inches and the mens narrow size starts from 3.2 inches to 4.2 inches

So How Do The European Metric Sizes Work
Well, again we have an oddly named and oddly sized unit of measurement. This time its a Paris point and comes in at 2/3 a centimetre. The shoe size is then the length of the last in Paris points. This does provide us an easy conversion from plain centimetres to shoe size, by multiplying the length of your foot by 1.5. This means my 26.5cm foot is a size 40, which would be a rough deal for a foot that is normally at least a 42! Then again, this would be a shoe fitting in the French way, where the toe is right up against the end. A more usual fitting would be adding in a centimetre of air, which would bring the size up to 41.5.
At this point you may be close to giving up on trying to follow this. Why must it be so complicated? Why cant some innovative and clever people come up with a sane and understandable solution? Well, they have. From the land of the rising sun we have the Japanese system of shoe sizes and it works pretty much like this:
How long is your foot?, 26.5cm, Excellent, sir, youll be wanting a size 26.5 then
Problem solved, everyone can understand it, it makes perfect logical sense and it will be no problem at all to efficiently match foot to shoe and conclude business. Then we can fix global warming, right?
What Is The Difference Between E And Ee Shoe Width
The difference between E and EE width sizes is that E is wide for men and extra wide for women. EE is extra wide for men. While we are not sure whether there is EE width for womenâs footwear, well, it would be something like EEEE or 4E for women. 2E is abbreviated as W as wide for men and extra wide is abbreviated as WW.

What Happens If My Shoes Are Too Wide
Your shoe will not be snug, and will rub against the back of your heel, resulting in a callus or even a bone spur. You also wont feel as stable when you walk, and your feet will move around in your shoes, which can cause friction when walking, leading to sores and blisters. Nail problems and hammertoes are also common issues with overly-wide shoes.
What Does Shoe Width Mean
Navigating shoe sizes can be a confusing maze of numbers and letters to the uninitiated.
The US and Europe use different shoe sizing metrics, there are different sizing standards for men and women, and there is almost no true standard shared by all manufacturers.
However, within this mess of sizing nomenclature, there is another often overlooked set of designations: shoe widths.
Getting the width of your shoe correct is just as important as getting the length right for comfort.
Shoes that are too narrow can squeeze your feet and cause cramps, while shoes that are too wide will allow your foot to move and cause rubbing that leads to blisters.
Although it is sometimes possible to narrow or widen shoes after you purchase them, particularly in the case of leather shoes, it is much simpler and more comfortable in the long run to get the width of your shoes correct right from the start.
To determine the width of a shoe, the key lies in a cryptic set of letters that are typically displayed alongside the length.
There are nine different widths of shoes in the measurement spectrum used in the US, with a different combination of letters to designate whether a shoe is narrow, medium, or wide.

Its important to point out that often, when a shoe is too tight on the arch, its not a size-up that is needed but a wider fit. The best way to tell if youve got the right width fitting is when the edges of your foot meet and align flush with the edges of the footbed, not narrower and not overlapping . The heel should sit snugly in the heel cup and the general feel without lacing up or fastening it should be comfortable without being restrictive.
Most orthopaedic/medical footwear brands tend to run wider than the average commercial shoe. But lets face it, the aesthetics are rather bland on the bulk of whats available. If you have wider than average feet, it is worth taking the time and finding that perfect pair rather than settling for a style that will only give you limited longevity or wearability because it doesnt go with much in your closet.
When shopping at speciality health footwear stores, you could request shoes with extra depth, these are helpful when your required size and width still feel a bit tight across the instep.
What Is The Difference Between Narrow Medium And Wide Width Shoes
Back in the day, every time I brought a new pair of shoes I have had some sizing issues, most of the time the shoes are a too narrow fit.
The funny part is that I thought its the perfect fit for me.
So that, I never thought about it until I noticing my toes seemed to squeezed together too much.
I think everyone who wears fitted shoes might have experienced this at least once. After that, I research a lot about shoe sizing, and how to properly measure the correct foot widths.
In this post, I will break down the difference between narrow shoes, medium shoes and wide width shoes.
Ill also provide some recommendations on how to measure for the proper fit, what brands are best for narrow, medium, and wide feet so you can shop with confidence!

Traditional Shoe Shop Widths
In the UK, we have a complicated system of C-I width fittings and if you have visited a shoe shop you may well have been given a letter to denote which category you fall into. Usually E, F, G or H with E being narrow, F and G medium and H wide.
However, these are not really width measurements at all but volume measurements. This is because the fitter uses a tape to measure around the whole foot. This means a narrow, deep foot would measure the same as a wide, shallow foot. In practice these two different feet would need a very different style of shoe and yet could be given the same width designation. We therefore dont find that these designations will help you find the best shoe for your child.
How To Measure Foot Width With A Tape Measure
Most of us are seeing a metal measuring device using at shoe stores to measuring foot size.
Instead of using a metal measuring device to measure your feet, Im going to tell you how you can measure your feet with a simple sheet of paper a pen, and some sort of measuring device you can use either a ruler or a tape measure.
Step 1. First, you grab a simple sheet of paper and place it on a flat surface. .
Step 2. And you want to put your foot down on the paper and then draw the outline of your foot with the pen held perpendicular to the paper make sure to hold the pen snugly against your foot.
Step 3. Once you have your foot drawing, youre going to go ahead and grab your measuring tape and then youre going to measure across at the widest part of the foot usually thats going to be the ball of the foot. Once you have that youre going to measure from the heel to the longest toe
Step 4. Write down the measurings on paper and take the foot sizing chart then find your foot size
Pro Tip: Some brands offer narrow-fit shoes and some are true to size. If the shoe brand says size is a narrow fit, size it up by half an inch is a better idea.

What Is The Average Shoe Width
About 90% of the popular is of a normal width. That means that if youre not sure of your foot width, you probably wear a normal width shoe, which would be a B for women and a D for men.
Usually, shoes will only note their width if it is outside of the standard. In other words, most shoes will not be marked with a B or D to indicate that they are standard width. If a shoe is not marked with a width at all, it is probably a standard width.
However, non-standard widths will usually be identified on boxes, and within the shoes on the label that is underneath the tongue of the shoe.
Men’s Shoe Width Letters Decoded
Knowing just your shoe size isn’t quite enough to obtain a properly fitting men’s shoe. Width is also a factor. Sure, it would be easy if shoe manufacturers simply stated their fits as either “wide” or “narrow.” Instead, they use a range of letters and numbers to refer to shoe widths. This makes things confusing, especially if you’re shopping online. But once you’ve deciphered these shoe width letters , shoe shopping becomes a breeze. Below is a chart to help you sort it all out.

Your feet change during your lifetime. To make sure that you get the best possible fit and comfort, we suggest you follow the simple directions below each time you purchase new shoes. To obtain the most accurate measurement, have someone else mark your feet for you so that you are standing up straight, full weight-bearing. Your feet likely won’t fit on a standard sized piece of paper, use a larger piece, or tape two pieces together.
1. Place a piece of blank paper on a hard floor.
2. Stand on the paper wearing a sock of medium thickness.
3. Holding a pencil vertically, place a mark at the end of your heel.
4. Place another mark at the tip of your longest toe.
5. Mark the sides of your foot at the widest part.
6. Measure your other foot using the same method.
