I’m just going to put this out there: My feet are not okay. Despite being a proponent of body positivity, I will never feel good about my feet. Between my mother’s insanely high arches and my father’s hammertoes, I’ve inherited feet that are less human and more pterodactyl. And this genetically flawed design is not merely aestheticeven shoe brands praised for being crazy comfortable tear up my prehistoric feet.

You know those trendy EVA Birkenstocks everyone loves? Don’t get me wrongI love them too. Except if I wear them for more than one or two errands, I have to reach for a Band-Aid. No one can believe how a rubber sandal can cut up my feet so badly. But it’s easy when you’re part dinosaur. And sneakers? After a couple of months of intense neighborhood power-walking and jogging, most athletic shoes leave the balls of my feet worn and calloused.

So after two years of reading rave reviews about Athletic Propulsion Labs shoes, I decided to give them a tryand you guys, I’m truly, madly, deeply in love with this brand and I don’t care that the Kardashians also wear it. And Jennifer Garner. And Oprah. Pssh, my love story is my own.

How To Wash Shoes By Hand

You know how to wash sneakers in the washing machine, but what if you dont want to? Hand-washing them isnt too difficult! Plus, it will be more gentle on the shoes.

Remove soles and laces: Remove these from the shoes. Let them soak in a bowl of cold soapy water for 20 minutes before scrubbing with a soft-bristled brush. Let them air dry on a towel.

Remove excess dirt: Use a soft-bristled brush to remove excess dirt on the outside of the shoes.

Treat stains: Dab a small drop of mild laundry detergent on the stained areas. Rub it into the shoe before letting it sit for 30 minutes. If your white shoes have yellowed, this step is critical.

Clean in soapy water: Fill up a large basin or sink with cold water and a tablespoon of mild laundry detergent. Dip a soft-bristled brush into the solution and apply it to your shoes in gentle linear directions.

Rinse: Once your shoes are clean, use a damp cloth to wipe the outside of the shoes to remove the remaining detergent residue.

Dry: Wait 24 hours for all parts of the shoe to properly air dry. To speed up this process, remember to stuff the shoes with some newspaper, rags, or socks. Once the shoes are dry, insert the laces and soles. You can now wear your shoes again!

As a refresher, I’m normally a size 10. At APL, I’m typically a 10.5, but since the TechLoom slides aren’t sold in half sizes, I’m an 11. Using the brand’s metrics for translating from women’s to men’s shoes, I would need a size 9.5 in the men’s TechLoom slides. But, remember, APL doesn’t do half sizes in slides . So it then became a question of go down a size or go up a size. Ultimately, I chose to go down, assuming that since I’m normally a size 8 in men’s , a 9 would be better than a 10. Unfortunately, the men’s 9 is closer to the women’s 10, and the strap seems a bit wider, too.

Had I tried these on in-store, I definitely would have asked for a size up, but since I ordered them online and I’m impatientand because they still fit, they’re just a tiny bit smaller than my women’s 11 TechLoom slides I kept them and wear them around just as much.

My only other… acknowledgment is that since the footbeds are made with mesh fabric, unless you get black or navy blue, it’s easy to leave a footprint in them . The good news, though? They’re machine-washable. According to the site, you can pop them in the wash on the cool setting and let them air dry.

Throw The Shoes In The Washing Machine

Throw your shoes in the washing machine. We dont really organize them in any way because the machine will naturally disperse them during the washing cycle.

As you can see, we dont use laundry bags. But you totally can!

Make a DIY deodorizer: Mix one cup of cornstarch, ½ a cup of baking soda, and ½ a cup of baking powder. Add a few drops of essential oil, such as tea tree. Sprinkle this deodorizer into your shoes and leave it for eight hours. Dump the mixture into the garbage before vacuuming the shoes. This mixture will deodorize and freshen your shoes.
Stuff them while drying: While your shoes may dry quickly without stuffing them, the added newspaper or rags can absorb odors and speed up the drying process.

Air out your shoes: When you come home, air your shoes out. Dont stuff them in a cupboard or closet. Leave them in a utility room or at the front door. You can even stuff newspaper in them between wears. This is a good tip for gym shoes that get stinky and sweaty while youre working out.
Use special insoles: Between wears, you can insert special insoles into your shoes. For instance, some insoles use special materials to eliminate bad odors, so that your shoes always smell fresh.

Wash Shoes In The Machine

Place your shoes in a mesh laundry bag. If you are without a mesh bag, you can use a pillowcase. We prefer mesh laundry bags because they zip closed, so your shoes wont fall out.

Put the shoes in the machine, then set your cycle. Remember to use a gentle cycle with a low spin speed and cold water.

Add ¼ of the amount of detergent you normally use. For front load machines, add this to the detergent drawer. For a top load machine, add it directly to the drum.

Toss in two old towels, to add extra padding during the cycle. This prevents the shoes from getting damaged in the cycle.

Begin the cycle.

Top Tip

If you have a top load washing machine, let the machine fill about ¾ full with water before you add the shoes.
