Finally, as we mentioned above, Salomon recently released a non-waterproof Aero variation of the mid-height model, which shaves a little weight off the version here at 1 pound 12.2 ounces and costs $135. Rounding out the collection, all of the aforementioned shoes and boots are available in womens versions for the same price . In testing the womens X Ultra 4 Mid GTX, we were similarly impressed by the boots light and nimble feel but found it to be noticeably lacking in ankle support and underfoot stability .

Build Quality And Durability
For the weight and price, Salomons X Ultra line has traditionally offered impressive levels of build quality and long-term durability. And the same appears true here: The latest model has a solid and well-made look and feel to it, and there have been no signs of premature wear throughout testing. The tread has worn down a bit, and the upper material has some minor fraying , but these are completely understandable outcomes given the use Ive put the boots through. More trail miles will give me a better idea of the X Ultra 4s long-term durability, but its worth pointing out that the boots have easily withstood the same terrain that ripped treads off my Merrell MQM Flex and tore back the toe cap on a pair of Altra Lone Peak Mids.

If you read reviews on Salomon.com, REI, or Backcountry.com you will notice a fair amount of negative feedback about the new X Ultra 4 GTX hiking shoes.
The most common theme was that many hikers thought the X Ultra 3 hiking shoes were better. Many hikers did not like the slightly higher cuff around the ankle. I have tried the X Ultra 4s, and I do not experience any discomfort around the cuff. My ankle does not come anywhere close to the edges of the cuff.
Fair enough. To each his own. I have to say, I find these less than stellar reviews surprising.
After trying the Salomon X Ultra 4 hiking shoes, and comparing them in parallel to the Salomon X Ultra 3 shoes , I do think that Salomon has made progress with its update. The X Ultra 4s do demonstrate a slight step up in overall quality from what I can see. They felt more comfortable, durable, and protective in the forefoot , and improved stability was noticeable to me. SensiFit is a common feature in Salomon footwear and felt like it worked a touch harder in the X Ultra 4s providing a nice snug fit around my foot. My forefoot often slips around in shoes that do not have this type of feature. I really had zero complaints about the X Ultra 4s. Although, I do think the X Ultra 3s are also a great option.

One of the main reasons to opt for a boot-height model is added protection, and the X Ultra 4 is nicely appointed here. The cushioning covers the heel and runs up and over the ankle, anddespite being on the thinner end of the spectrumtheres enough padding to protect when sliding through tight spaces or knocking against rocks and trail debris. Finally, the toe cap is made of rubber and has proven to be impressively solid. Ive had a few direct hits with roots on the trail and came away unscathed. The thin upper is one potential source of weakness, but thats a fairly uncommon spot to come into serious contact with sharp and abrasive obstacles.

The shoe has a Contragrip MA outsole developed for hikers. It is designed for a wide variety of surfaces. With this, Salomon guarantees a secure grip on wet and dry as well as hard and loose surfaces.
