Comfort Above Anything Else
In a study that analyzed 40 years of running injuries, researchers found that comfort plays a significant factor in reducing injuries.
Comfort is made of:
- Perfect size. If youre not sure which size you need, check our ultimate size guide.
- Perfect fit. This means your shoe isnt too tight nor it feels too loose around your heel or forefoot. Additionally, no part of the shoe should give you discomfort – there should be no pinching nor uncomfortably tight areas.
- Cushioning. Its that soft foamy layer that makes your feet experience walking on clouds feeling.
Research has shown that comfort might go as far as improving the running economy and decreasing injury risk . Runners usually report more comfort with more cushioning.
Typically, lightweight running shoes offer less cushioning, and we therefore generally dont recommend beginners to pick running shoes that weigh less than 250 grams. This way, youll leave aside two extremes: racing flats and extremely bulky running shoes. More experienced runners can find joy in having a pair of lightweight running shoes for their speed runs.

Nike Zoom Vomero 11 Running Shoes
It features a 12-millimeter heel-to-toe offset. The Zoom Vomero 11 is a premium daily running shoe designed for the neutral runner utilizing a re-engineered fly mesh upper. The eleventh version of the Vomero is improved to provide a truer fit in the forefoot while still providing a plush sensation with sufficient lockdown.
We also see the continued use of Lunarlon and cushion foam that works with a zoom air unit to provide soft cushioning throughout your gait. On the outsole, the use of a new dura DS rubber in the forefoot provides additional impact protection on the roads.
Buyer’s Guide To Finding Your Perfect Nike Running Shoes
When searching for the right pair of shoes for your feet, lets be honest, appearance matters a lot, but that is not the only factor that should go into your decision-making process. For example, if you are a beginner, you don’t really require shoes with advanced responsiveness features. Ideally, you should have your gait analyzed by an expert podiatrist. Using this analysis, you will have exact information about the padding needed in your shoes. Also, breathability and flexibility must be ensured in shoes made for everyday running. Plus, the type of terrain will determine the level of cushioning you need. We have detailed all of these factors in our buying guide, so make sure to read on.

Putting Them All Together
None of these approaches are perfect, but they all point to a similar conclusion. Wherever we look for evidence that shoes matter in a marathon or half marathon, we find Vaporflys at or near the top of that list. More than that, the shoes tend to be outliers among all popular shoes, suggesting that there is something happening in races with Vaporflys that is not happening in races with nearly any other kind of popular shoe.
Nothing is certain, of course, and we describe some reasons for continued skepticism below. But from our perspective, the most honest answer we can give to the question Do Vaporflys really make runners faster? is a qualified yes.
How Should Mens Running Shoes Fit
A running shoe should feel snug in the heel and midfoot, with some wriggle room around the toes when standing. A well-fitted shoe should allow for half to a full thumbs width of space.
Dont be afraid to try out the shoes first to ensure they work for you. Everyones feet are different structurally and in the way they move when running, so focus on the fit and comfort doing so means theyre a great shoe for you.

Its getting soggier and soggier out there, as youll no doubt have noticed on your morning runs recently. The whole idea of the Shield iteration of Nikes Zoom Pegasus model is to keep your feet dry, warm and cosseted through the winter: theres extra grip on the soles, a weatherised upper to keep off splashes and a tongue which is it says here gusseted to make sure none of those puddles get through to your socks. Its not just comfort either: dry feet means less rubbing, which means fewer blisters. Think on.

Following Runners As They Switch To A New Kind Of Racing Shoe
Pros of this approach: Accounts for runners of varying skills over several races.
Cons of this approach: Runners could save Vaporflys for when they expect to be faster than normal, or Vaporfly wearers could be different in some way from other kinds of runners.
The runners who use Strava are an enthusiastic bunch: About one in four have uploaded data for two or more marathons, and about one in 10 have uploaded data for three or more. The Strava data allows us to follow these repeat racers over time, and, crucially, as they change shoes.
Glenn Kasin, a 49-year-old doctoral student at the Southern California University of Health Sciences, is one of these avid runners. He has uploaded five marathons to Strava since November 2015, and he wore a different pair of shoes in every race. In January, at the Houston Marathon, he decided to race in Vaporflys.
New York, 2015
In Houston, Mr. Kasin improved on his Boston time by about 18 minutes, an improvement owing to much more than a pair of shoes. He attributed his result, a 2:56:00, to many things: perfect weather, a fast course and the culmination of two consecutive years of a training regimen that included, on average, about 50 miles of running per week. But he said he also thought the shoes made a difference.
Everything aligned, and then you throw that shoe on top of it, he said. The pace felt so easy that you felt like questioning: Whats going on here? When is it not going to feel easy?

How We Chose These Shoes
Weve tested many of the shoes below, and the others were in the process of testing. That means getting feedback from our Runners World staff and team of over 350 wear testers, as well as analyzing the shoes in our lab. Weve performed a battery of mechanical tests to assess the energy return of Nikes carbon-fiber plates, the softness of ZoomX midsoles, and the breathability of Flyknit versus Vaporweave upper materials. The options below incorporate Nikes newest top-shelf innovations, and include both flagship models and picks that suit the needs of trail runners and overpronators. Where possible, weve linked to full reviews for a more in-depth look at an individual shoes performance.
BEST DAILY TRAINER
- Thicker midsole, now with React foam, provides bottomless cushioning
- Heel fit felt slightly loose to some testers
- Softer and lighter than the standard Pegasus
- Some testers found the upper a bit loose and sloppy
A souped-up, speed-oriented version of the Pegasus, the Peg Turbo keeps the winning combo of ZoomX and React foams found in the first generation. Together they deliver exceptional shock absorption and energy return, so the shoe feels comfortable and fast. Unfortunately, the new thin mesh upper has issues. Its minimal heel support means you have to cinch the laces down for a secure fit, but the tongue isnt thick or long enough to prevent the laces from causing irritation. If you can handle a looser fit, though, you might avoid the discomfort.
Best Nike Running Shoes
This article has been updated with current models for November 2021. The Pegasus Trail 2, Revolution 5, Structure 23, and the Zoom Fly 3 have been replaced with their updated versions. The introduction has been edited to reflect seasonal updates.
2020 was a strange year for all of us, and that reflected on Nikes assortment as well.
Not much changed during the previous year, and new models like the ZoomX Invincible Run, Vomero 15, and Structure 23 only appeared towards the end of the year. The Structure and Vomero have since been updated.
The Alphafly Next % was the only true 2020 release, but it was akin to a Vaporfly Next% with a Zoom Air bag. The Alpha was underwhelming to say the least, if our in-depth review is anything to go by.
The Structure 23 took an interesting turn. It ceased to be the traditional stability running shoe with a firm ride and medial post. Instead, its now a supportive neutral trainer with plenty of ride comfort for high-mileage runs. The Structure 24 is more of the same.
Another Nike shoe got redesigned from the ground up the Vomero 15 with its new Zoom X and Zoom Air midsole. It was not at all what one expected it to be.
Usually, a ZoomX midsole builds up the expectation of a soft and bouncy ride, but the new Vomero has a somewhat firm ride due to the liberal use of a firmer EVA frame and updated outsole geometry. The Vomero 16 has been around for a while now, and its nearly identical to the Vomero 15.

What Factors Should You Consider When Shopping For Nike Running Shoes
Nike has provided guidance to help you categorize the intended use. Everyday running, short runs, race training, trial runs, and actual racing are the most common categories. Most of the shoes are fit for one or two categories at max. Materials used in making shoes for each use and the design are different for each category.
Your running style depends on where you are in your journey towards being a marathon runner. You could be getting started or fully committed and dedicated. Some people are even past that stage and preparing themselves for an actual competition. Runners who are getting started like to run on the same surface for months, while those who have been running for more than a year or two start to shake things up by choosing various types of terrains. This is necessary to keep yourself motivated. If that’s the case, you need a pair of shoes that will provide the necessary support to your feet to ensure a comfortable running experience.
Your running shoe should not be a dead weight under your feet. Instead, it should respond to your stomping and give a push back. It saves you a lot of energy because your shoes sole unit can absorb that energy in as if there is a spring in there, and while expanding, it delivers that energy back to your legs. You should aim to optimize the responsiveness based on your needs.
