My shoes talk, he joked with the staff at San Antonio’s Julian Gold recently, before the store opened for a personal appearance that had him mugging for photos with customers including a busload of Pliner shoe collectors from Corpus Christi and autographing every style they took home: platforms, wedges, heels, flats, even handbags.
On Saturday, the designer will be in his Houston store, his second-best-selling boutique after Las Vegas, to do the same.
Pliner, who launched his shoes and accessories line in 1989, learned the art and craft of shoemaking and selling on the floor in a company operated by his family in Chicago.
Today, his designs are known worldwide for their elastic and stretchable micro-fiber technology, which feels like soft leather.
Pliner, 63, and his wife, Lisa, 42, also a shoe designer, also operate their Peace for the Children Foundation, which they started in 2007 after adopting daughter Starr Emmanuelle from a Kazakhstan orphanage.

LOS ANGELES-Donald Pliner, an iconic designer and marketer of luxury footwear, today announced that he is leaving his current position as Creative Director of the Donald J Pliner Company in order to pursue new creative endeavors.
It is with bittersweet emotions that I announce that I have decided to leave the company I founded, stated Mr. Pliner. I am proud of having built a high quality and innovative luxury footwear brand and wish to thank my loyal customers and followers. I will continue to be a shareholder and will be fully supportive of the company and the brand as I begin this next chapter of my life.
Pliner decided to leave the company to pursue other creative ventures, which may involve establishing new creative companies or designing, consulting and public speaking at events for brands outside the footwear industry.
In 2005, Pliners wife Lisa, also a luxury footwear designer, launched her own signature collection known as Lisa F. Pliner known for their distinctive green sole, which was followed by the 2010 launch of their signature collection Lisa for Donald J Pliner, now known as Donald and Lisa Signature. Lisa Pliner also will be leaving the company to pool her and Donalds talents as they embark on new endeavors.

Donald J Pliner Shoes Of White Plains Sued For $12m
A White Plains luxury footwear company received shoes worth more than $1.2 million, but failed to pay the Hong Kong manufacturer, according to a newly filed lawsuit.
Universal International Max Ltd., the shoemaker, filed the complaint June 2 in U.S. District Court in White Plains, against Donald J Pliner of Florida LLC.
In November 2018, the complaint states, Pliner ceased paying for the orders it placed, despite receiving and accepting the merchandise.
Universal International Max manufactures shoes for men and women that Pliner designs, according to the complaint, and sells at a New York showroom and department stores.
The brand was founded in 1989 by Donald J. Pliner, who credits his creations to the study of anatomy and portraiture.
Colors and materials come first, he stated in a 2016 press release after he formed a new brand and left the business named for him, then the designs, but most important, exceptionally comfortable fashion.
Pliner sold his brand in 2011 to DJP Holdings and stayed on as the creative director until 2015. In 2018, a hedge fund that owned DJP sold it to Studio H 33 Inc., owned and operated by John Hanna.
Universal International Max has made shoes for DJP for eight years, according to the complaint. DJP would send a purchase order specifying the designs, colors, sizes and number of shoes to make. Typically, the goods would be shipped out in 75 to 110 days and then payments were due in 30 to 45 days.
