What They Do: Chen Su Lan offers temporary protection and shelter to boys and girls aged between 5 and 21, of different ethnic and religious backgrounds, who come from needy and disadvantaged families. The ultimate outcome from providing nurturing and care is for the children to be reunited with their families or return to society.
Whats Accepted: In order to keep the home running and provide for the childrens needs, CSL needs donations in-kind, especially household items such as toiletries. Groceries are also allowed to be donated. They only receive donations in-kind during their office hours, which is from 9 am to 6 pm, Mondays to Fridays. Public holidays are excluded.
Where & How To Donate: Before you donate, make sure to contact the staff beforehand to arrange an appointment and discuss what you can bring along, by sending an email to , or calling them 6713 9150. The homes needs vary weekly, and there is limited space.

Whats Accepted: As they mainly cater to young children, they accept childrens books, lego toy sets, as well as educational board and card games. They are known for not only helping people find the right outfit but also for ensuring they have what they need to prosper in the professional world.
Mens suits are welcome at Career Gear, but if youre hard-pressed to find a location near you, Mens Wearhouse has an annual Suit Drive where they accept gently used professional attire to support nonprofit organizations like Dress for Success and Career Gear.

Arizona Humane Society Thrift Store
For animal lovers, the volunteer-run Arizona Humane Society thrift stores in Mesa and Cave Creek accept donated clothes and household items for resale, with profits benefitting Arizonas most vulnerable pets.
They accept all types of clothing but be sure to check their website if you want to donate other items. They also collect used dog toys and other goods specifically for animals in their shelter.

Whats Wrong With Donating To Goodwill
Theres nothing inherently wrong with donating to Goodwill, but your clothes may have a greater impact elsewhere. In some cases, your donated clothing may actually be harming people instead of helping them.
Only 20% of clothes donated to thrift stores is actually resold. The rest is trashed or dumped in the Global South, where it pollutes their land and water, and disrupts their local textile economy. Ghanas Kantamanto market is a prime example of this.
Besides that, Goodwill can be exploitative. Its CEO made $730k in 2018, and many other executives make close to a million, or at least six figures. All the while, many workers with disabilities are paid less than $1/hour. There is a legal loophole in the Fair Standards Labor Act that allows people with disabilities to be paid less than minimum wage based on their productivity.
You could get into an hours-long discussion about the nuances of the policy, other government benefits, and how this affects people with disabilities. But one thing is clear: its not possible to live on a paltry paycheck like that. Its grossly inequitable and disappointing to see a non-profit pay workers so little and executives so much.

Any kind of textile, even the one that is natural and biodegradable, will have a hard time degrading due to the landfill conditions lack of sunlight and oxygen.
Instead of making the solid waste stream grow in our landfills, we should try to reuse, repurpose or recycle our clothes.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul of central and northern Arizona is a religious nonprofit organization with multiple thrift stores in the Valley. The SVdP Thrift Stores generate funding that feeds, clothes, houses, and heals Arizona families in need, according to their website.

Some organizations and programs arent taking donations due to the pandemic, so be sure to double-check before making plans to drop anything off. This is another reason that giving clothes away directly may be more effective, as individuals decide their comfort level in accepting others clothing. You can also do contactless porch pickups when passing your clothes onto individuals.
Some organizations are also overwhelmed with donations, so I always try to call ahead and see whats needed before dropping anything off.
Vietnam Veterans Of America
The Vietnam Veterans of America is an organization dedicated to promoting and serving the needs of Vietnam War veterans through legislative initiatives, education and outreach programs. The non-profit collects donations of clothing and household items, which they either give directly to homeless and low-income veterans or re-sell in their resale stores to generate funds for their various programs and initiatives.
Accepted donations: The VVA accepts clothing of all types and sizes, including accessories and shoes. They also accept furniture, appliances and other household items.
