Knock knock. Are you ripe inside?

Forget about the old-fashioned process of thumping a watermelon to determine whether it is ripe. As a kid, we used to go down the corn row where they would also grow watermelons and plug them to pick a ripe one. This, too, is an old fashioned way that is defiantly not a sure thing. The thump is not a sure thing in determining a melons ripeness simply because a thump only produces a sound that can be uncertain when it boils down to the ripeness deep inside.

There is a more sensible method to confidently determine the ripeness of a watermelon that includes more than a small thump. This method will defiantly work whether the melon is in the supermarket, roadside stand, or in a field. It is not the thump method but the knock method, just like your knocking on a door. To do the melon knock, place one hand on the bottom of melon and with other hand, make a fist and knock on the watermelon. Solid sound which indicates the melon is ripe all the way through it is not hollow sound or an empty sound, but an unmistakable solid vibration sound that you can feel with your hand. Another thing to check before knockingis if the stem is bright green, it could mean the melon is pink inside and not ready. Knocking is a foolproof method of selecting a ripe watermelon. It is also a way to spread good will and know how to others at the super market or produce stand by showing others how to select a ripe, red watermelon.

Six Flags Hurricane Harbor Rides

Okay, now here is the fun part!! My favorite rides!

I rode all but 2 of the rides. I am not a huge fan of the straight drops like the ones on Der Stuka or Dive Bomber so I opted out of those!

Here are my favorites.

The Black Hole

This ride was so much fun, we went multiple times! It is almost completely dark inside of the slide and there are a ton of twists turns and drops that you cant see coming! You ride on this slide in a tube and can do doubles or singles. I loved riding double!

Tsunami Surge

For this waterslide you also ride double and inside of a tube. This slide had me screaming with my eyes closed the whole time, but it was a BLAST! The video of this slide on the Six Flags Hurricane Harbor website does not do it justice. We actually thought it was going to be boring until we were already heading down! haha!

Tornado

The Tornado is a tube ride where you get to ride with 4 people! The drop on this waterslide is huge and it is so much fun to ride along with your friends on this one!

Bring Water Shoes Or Your Feet Will Burn

We went here on a Thursday and didn’t find the lines too long. Expensive like any amusement attraction. $20 or $30 to park depending on where you parked. $35 each to get in. $16 to rent a locker. Crappy nachos and cheese with a bottle of water $19.00. We enjoyed most of the slides and didn’t have to wait too long for any of them. Biggest complaint is they don’t tell you anywhere on their website to wear water shoes because of course they want you to wait until you are there and getting your feet burned off to buy shoes from them!!! The pavement was insanely hot and would most certainly cause burns and blisters on little ones feet. They really need to warn people in advance or address this issue and find a way to cool the pavement somehow. This is Texas after all, they know it’s always going to be hot! Also we never got to use the wave pool because it is only open 45 mins of every hour. Not sure why but I’m guess they must be find so much feces / urine / garbage in it that they feel the need to clean it every 45 mins.. This was a nice activity for our family as we had never been and are not from Texas but I have been to much nicer waterparks and would not go back here even if we visited Dallas again.

Our Visit To Hurricane Harbor And Six Flags

Hurricane Harbor at Six Flags Atlanta KoKoa Magazine

This entire time I though I had added Our Visit to Hurricane Harbor and Six Flags to our happy travels. I looked, and alas, its not there. I will just have to do it right now!

Every year we go to Six Flags, whether its the theme park or the water park. In the past, when the kids were younger, we used to do the Read To Succeed Program. It worked well. As they got older, they no longer qualify for it, so now we either get tickets, or this year, we have passes for the three of us . Many of my kids friends love going there to just meet and walk around and have a bit of a good time. Since we live quite far away, we dont make it there that often. I imagine well go more when the heat eases off.

Still Time To Plant Pansies

Ray Baird

Entering the calm days of mid November

Thanksgiving is still nearly two weeks from now and we can enjoy the calm before the upcoming holiday season begins. We love the calm of early November as the garden turns from mid summer mode to the vegetable crops of autumn and winter. Nap time has visited the flower beds and pansies have become flowers of the month of November.

Nature is in a slowdown cycle as the only green in the forests and woodlands shine through in the holly, cedar, and pine trees. The nights of November are so calm you can almost hear the remaining leaves on the trees touch the lawn. Frosts are heavier and linger longer each morning. It is time to enjoy the best of seasons and prepare our hearts and minds for the season of harvest and Thanksgiving.

The artist of autumn turns lawn brown

The autumn lawn has a new color as the frosts of November have given the lawn many coats of crystal white and the lawn has a tan and brown tint as the result. The lawn looks even more brown with the coating of remaining leaves falling from trees. The leaves are now crisp which makes them easy to vacuum and blow to the garden area and composite bin and pile.

The Best Way To Dress For A Water Amusement Park

Getting pruned fingers never felt so satisfying. A day at a water park, whether it’s a small-town spot with three slides and two pools or a top-of-the-line Disney park, is a chance to abandon all cares and focus on fun. Shivering, sweating or getting turned away for inappropriate clothing will all ruin that fun. Dress the part and dive in.

What To Bring To Six Flags Hurricane Harbor

We brought a bag full of things that we did end up needing, but we probably could have left most of it in the truck. Since I had never been before I wasnt sure what we would need so I brought in towels, dry clothes, sunscreen, phones, wallets, etc. When we got there we rented a locker, but I instead I wish we would have just bought one of these to hold a phone and money so that we didnt have to keep going back to the locker when we needed stuff.

As for the towels and dry clothes, we never used them until we were leaving so we could have left them in the truck and brought them back in to change in the changing rooms.

Bring water shoes or flip flops! I cannot stress this enough. Especially make sure your kids have them on because it is Texas and the concrete is HOT. You can either hold your flip flops while you are going down the waterslides or set them at the bottom of the slide and grab them when you get off.

So here is a recap of what you will probably need to bring:

  • Sunscreen
  • Money

Eating At Six Flags Hurricane Harbor

There are numerous places to eat at the park. You can get your hand stamped and either go eat lunch at a nearby restaurant or bring a packed lunch and eat it outside of the park. You cannot bring food or drinks into the park.

We all ate the nachos and they were super good. I cant remember the exact name of the plate of nachos I ordered, but they were loaded with meat and vegetables.

I would highly recommend buying one of the souvenir cups because they come with free refills the whole day. We alternated filling up our souvenir cup with soda and ice water and we drank well over what we paid for the cup so it was worth it.

The cool thing about the cup we bought is that if we bring it back and pay a discounted price we can get the unlimited free refills again!

Review: Six Flags Hurricane Harbor In New Jersey

We chose the perfect day to go to Hurricane Harbor . It was warm, in the mid-80s, but not too hot. We hit no traffic on the way there . We didnt get sunburned! I didnt leave with a headache from motion sickness. All in all, a great day at Hurricane Harbor, our first time at this water park.

If it werent for my husbands contact lens emergency, we might have shaved 15 minutes off our wait in the first line. Lesson learned: if you wear contact lenses to the park, bring a spare set AND a bottle of saline solution, neither of which my husband did.

And heres another tip. If you have contacts, bring a mirror, especially if youre a guy. Theres no mirror in the giant mens bathroom by the first locker section . My husband had to go in the womens bathroom, with me standing guard so no one though that a pervert was in the ladies room.

Whats it like?

Hurricane Harbor had more water slides than we were able to do in one day. Granted, we also ate lunch and spent a good amount of time in the lazy river. And we tried out the wave pool for a short time too. We easily could have fit in a few more slides. It was an attractive park with a cute theme, and pretty easy to find your way around. See a map of Six Flags Hurricane Harbor here.
