Tamara Mellon Wants To Bring You Champagne Shoes On A Beer Budget

I tried to do direct to consumer three years ago and three years ago I felt that the customer was ready for it, veteran shoe designer Tamara Mellon tells me of the new Tamara Mellon shoe collection over the phone from Los Angeles. The former New Yorker has re-launched her namesake brand after leaving her top tier position at Jimmy Choo and moved across the country for what some would say is a fresh start. Theres this sort of migration west at the moment, a sort of energy thats definitely moving to LA, Mellon says. The city is kind of going through an interesting transition sort of renaissance time where there is so much going on here. I think its really exciting to be here.
Excitement is something I could say Mellon is used to. If you havent heard the story heres a quick run down: After cofounding luxury shoe brand Jimmy Choo in 1996, Mellon left in 2011 with a reported $135 million payout. In 2013 she launched Tamara Mellon, a collection of shoes and apparel, but in a turn of events, Mellon eventually filed for bankruptcy. I had to put the company through a reorg, raise a new round of financing, and sort of press the restart button, the designer says of the setback. Its amazing how much resilience you can have when youre passionate about a project that youre doing.

The Beginning Of The Jimmy Choo Empire
Choo started his first workshop in an old hospital building in Hackney, London in 1988. His shoes were delicate, hand-made all in-house and caught the eye of Vogue Magazine which was a great stroke of luck for Choo. Vogue ran an eight-page spread featuring Choo’s shoes and he became a sensation…but hardly an overnight one since he had been making shoes almost his entire life! One of his most notable clients was Princess Diana, who owned multiple pairs of shoes he made for her. She even owned several in the same design, but in different colors to go with her ever-changing wardrobe. Rumor was that the statuesque Princess Diana at 5’10’ tall could only wear the very high heel Jimmy Choo’s she adored after the split from also 5’10” Prince Charles! In fact, Choo was scheduled to deliver a pair of shoes to her on the day she was tragically killed and he has kept the shoes in remembrance of her.
Choo partnered with Tamara Yeardye Mellon in1996 to start Jimmy Choo Shoes, Ltd, also known as Jimmy Coo Ready-to-Wear. Mellon, daughter of the creator of the Vidal Sassoon hair care line, Tom Yeardye, was fashion accessories editor at British Vogue Magazine. Mellon ran the operations and Choo did what he knew best, made shoes. Together, they formed a successful partnership. Jimmy Choo’s name quickly became known as the ultimate in beautiful, luxurious…and very high end shoes.

The Growth Of Jimmy Choo
Within a few years, Jimmy Choo shoes became one of the most coveted in the world.

Its hard in this day and age to separate the truth from the noise. Now, Im not saying that my opinion is fact. Its just that- an opinion. But, that being said, Ive built my blog on honesty and bluntness- I always try to be real and authenitc with you. So keep in mind there are many other people that dont share my views. The prettiest of the group. That red lacquered sole is ionic and I love how they create the illusion of a skinnier heel with the red split heel. They run a half size too big, which is weird because all of my other Louboutins fit normally with my correct size. Not the most comfortable, but not unbearable. Absolutely gorgeous. Professional and ladylike with an edge.

How Durable Are Jimmy Choo Romy Heels
When I purchased my first pair of Jimmy Choo Romy heels I was worried that it would take no time at all for the thin heel to show scuff marks and that the pointy toe would wear off equally quickly. To my surprise, so far, I have noticed none of the above which is a testimony of the superb quality of Jimmy Choo stilettos.
Naturally, it is inevitable that even the most luxurious pair of pumps will finally start displaying some signs of wear and tear. In case of Jimmy Choo Romy heels 100 in kid, these are linked to the exceptionally soft leather used in their construction. After a years use, I have observed gentle wrinkling effect in the area where the leather bends during walking. Due to its delicate nature, the leather can also become slightly misshapen if the shoes are not stored properly e.g. without paper inserts supporting the shoe structure. As I did not use any inserts at first and my Romys sat squashed in a box for a while, the leather developed some minimal indents and flattening is some parts. Luckily, these are invisible when the shoes are worn. There are also a few very small scratches on the leather which must have been caused by friction but, again, these are virtually imperceptible unless the shoes are inspected very, very closely.

If you have the budget to match your taste, you may want to pick up a Jimmy Choo purse. These are in high-demand and the prices are on the higher end. They start about $1,900 for a small snakeskin clutch while a large hobo bag can run you close to $3,500. For the money, you get the finest materials, exceptional finishing and high-quality hardware. There is also a limited edition crocodile leather bag that recently sold for $30,000.

What has inspired me to write this review of Jimmy Choo Romy heels is a conversation not long ago with a work colleague who mentioned she dreamt about a pair of Choos. Why?
