Key West Food Tour – Kino Sandals | Oakland Travel

Grenada is located in the eastern Caribbean, southwest of neighboring Barbados. The culture of this tri-island state nation features a distinctive blend of British and French influences along with those of its neighboring Caribbean islands. The island of Grenada is home to the countrys most iconic natural wonders such as the picturesque Grand Anse Beach and the 13-acre Grand Etang crater lake.

How We Do It

All of the sandals are handmade using natural leather straps and natural rubber soles. They are each assembled and glued in our traditional sandal factory, where the Sandaleros, the old world sandal maker, works diligently at his or her station. In the aisles around the Sandaleros you will see boxes of unfinished sandals as they move through different stages of manufacture. The smell of leather permeates the room where you may select from a wide variety of sandals with your size and color preference.

In 2016 Kino Sandals celebrated their 50th Anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Lopez were proud of the fact that for the last 30 years the company was administered by their three children- Robert Lopez, Ana Lopez Johnson and Christina Lopez Ruiz. The second generation played a major role in evolving the company through the closing of many USA shoe manufacturers/ suppliers. We are proud of the fact that Kino Sandals are still made in the USA.

If you are in Key West, please feel free to visit and watch as our sandals are made.

A Key West Original Kinos Sandal Factory

Island GennInformation

If you live in Key West you probably own a pair of Kinos sandals. Having a pair of Kinos is almost like belonging to a secret club because you wont find these sandals anywhere else in the world.

Kinos Factory founder Roberto Lopez was a Cuban immigrant who made shoes in his homeland. After arriving in Key West, he started his own sandal company in 1966 and named it Kino which was Lopezs childhood nickname. It has been over forty years since Roberto opened his sandal factory a third generation of Lopezes are now running the family business.

The original shop was located at 105 Whitehead Street. Today the shop is tucked away in a little corner of downtown Key West at Kino Plaza located at 107 Fitzpatrick Street. The building also houses several other shops, but Kinos are the main attraction. You will know you are getting close to the plaza when you start to smell the leather that these quality sandals are made from.

As you walk into the large, open area you will see boxes of sandals of different styles behind a large counter. Just ask one of the workers to see your size and I am sure you will end up leaving with a pair.

All Kinos sandals are handmade with natural leather straps and natural rubber soles and assembled right here in Key West. You would think that with the quality materials that go into these sandals that they would cost a fortune. But they are very affordable, with prices ranging from $12 to $18 a pair!

What I Didnt Buy Kino Sandals

Kinos Sandal Factory in Key West

For over a year Ive been searching diligently for a particular style of sandal, and today I thought Id found them. I was wrong, but in the process made another, perhaps more interesting, discovery.

A while back I saw an ad for a pair of Sperry sandals in a vintage magazine. I neglected to note the date, but Im sure it was from the late 1950s or early 60s. At any rate, the sandals were leather soles and a leather strap but with a rope thong that went between the toes. Sort of like what you see in the photo above.

I spotted these sandals the moment I entered the thrift store. It was one of those moment when the first thought of Finally! quickly gave way to Close, but , no. In other words, that little voice warned me before I even reached the rack that these were not the Sperry sandals Id been searching for. There was a definite lack of the quality Id expect to find in a pair of vintage Sperry shoes.

And I was right. The sandals were made by Kino, which rang a very vague bell, but which I really could not place where Id heard of or seen them. They were leather, but the materials and the construction were obviously not high end. Still, they were cute summer thongs, in a style Ive been wanting and they were very lightly worn.

So why didnt I buy them? They were too big.

I was curious enough to see what I could find out about them, and a quick Google did not disappoint. Kinos are made in Key West, by the same family that has been making them since 1966.
