I’ve been fortunate enough to visit all three Sandals overwater bungalows resorts and tour the bungalows as well, so I thought it would be helpful to discuss the pros and cons of each of them to help people decide with confidence. Each of the resorts is among the finest all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean, so you’d be extremely happy at any of them, but they each have strengths that the others don’t have.

- 12 Over-the-Water Private Island Butler Honeymoon Bungalows
This is said to be the most premium of Sandals 7 resorts in Jamaica, and its the only resort that offers overwater bungalows with an infinity pool of their own. The location close to Montego Bay airport has pluses and minuses.
- 12 Over-the-Water Honeymoon Butler Bungalows
This resort is more isolated near the southwest corner of Jamaica and its on the largest property of the three. The shuttle ride from Montego Bay airport takes about 90 minutes each way, although transportation is always included in the Sandals room rate.

Sandals South Coast Resort Jamaica
If youve got the extra 90 minutes for the shuttle ride to Sandals South Coast its probably worth it. This resort is on a sprawling piece of prime beach property in a quiet area of Jamaica. It feels much more like a luxury beach resort being away from the airport like it is. Personally, I prefer this resort to the Royal Caribbean because its so spread out and feels more relaxed.
The disadvantages of Sandals South Coast are that the 90-minute shuttle ride can feel long after a long flight, and the drive through the hills in the center of Jamaica isnt as scenic or pleasant as it could be.
Overwater bungalows location
The 12 overwater bungalows at Sandals South Coast are at the northern edge of the resorts beach, behind a security station at the entrance to the pier. There are no bars or restaurants on the pier so guests have to head to the main part of the resort several times per day, although guests can get complimentary in-room dining.
The water under the overwater bungalows is deeper than at Sandals Royal Caribbean, so the water doesnt seem quite as turquoise and you probably cant stand on the bottom.
Tipping At Sandals Resorts
Sandals Resorts have a no tipping policy with just a few exceptions including butlers and spa therapists.
Packing Must-Have: Cell Phone Lanyard
Be sure to pack a cell phone lanyard for your overwater bungalow vacation. Dont risk accidentally dropping your phone in the water or losing hold of it when you fall asleep in a hammock!

My Husband and I stayed in the over water bungalows . Everything about the accommodations was on point – beautiful design, furnishings, interiors, the views…it was heaven. Our two butlers were also excellent. Very attentive, helpful and sincere in helping us enjoy our stay. Now for the disappointing part….the Food and drinks. While we had never traveled to a Sandals before, and understood that the main portion of the resort would be of a different caliber than the over water bungalows, it was extremely disappointing to find that the F& B options were all generally mass produced and poorly prepared. You eat the same food / drinks as the rest of the resort and no effort has been put in to raise the quality so it matches the price point of the Over water villas. Its all the High Quantity, Low Quality. It was not worth it to leave the villa and travel to any of the restaurants. And even the in-room menu for the villas featured the same poor quality food as the rest of the resort. The only exception was the top shelf liquor in the room. Otherwise, all the drinks were also very poor quality, high in processed ingredients and lacking anything fresh or authentic. More

As I said in the introduction, there are only 3 over-the-water bungalows in Jamaica, two of them located on the south coast, but this doesnt mean you cannot have a luxury stay by the ocean anywhere else in the island!
If you are looking specifically for an overwater bungalow experience but the 3 above didnt quite tickle your fancy, there are plenty of other overwater bungalows in the Caribbean or the Maldives that you should have a look at.But if you are set on visiting Jamaica, there are still many more exclusive hotels located right on the beach, so youll get the peace of staying by the water and access to great amenities such as floating water hammocks, a private beach, delicious dining options, and more. Basically everything you can find in the overwater bungalow resorts except the overwater part.
