Keen Shoe Quality Depends On Where It Was Made

Keen Hiking Shoes ~ Waterproof Hiking Shoes Review ~ Keen Marshall WP

One person pointed out how the quality of the shoes depends on where they were made. For example, Keen shoes made in the USA, China or Mexico tend to have a higher quality than those that were made in Cambodia or India. Keen shoes made in Vietnam have better quality, but not as good as China, Mexico or the USA.

Interestingly, you can tell where some types of shoes were made based on their color. For example, the Keen Unisex Kid Newport H2 Sandal does this. If it is a purple shoe, they made it in Vietnam.

Merrell Background And History

Merrell has been around a little longer than KEEN: Clark Matis, Randy Merrell, and John Schweizer founded the footwear company in 1981. Matis and Schweizer worked for a ski company, while Merrell made custom boots. They joined forces to produce high-performance boots under the name Merrell. By 1986, their sales numbered 25,000 pairs of boots.

The companys sales hit $10 million by 1990, and Merrell opened multiple divisions worldwide. Well-known footwear manufacturer Wolverine World Wide acquired Merrell in 1997, and theyve operated as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Wolverine ever since.

Today, Merrell sells trail running shoes, apparel, and accessories both in-store and online. The company partners with numerous organizations to help everyone enjoy the outdoors.

Manufacturing Of Keen Shoes In Mexico

Mexico has especially become a popular manufacturing hub because of the low cost of labor and its much closer proximity to the United States over China. Keen makes the Newport sandal in Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico. This facility uses natural rubber and recycled plastic webbing to make the shoes.

What we find interesting about Keen choosing Leon as its manufacturing point comes from the fact that the facility sits roughly 11 hours away from the Mexico-Texas border. Many American companies that choose to manufacture in Mexico choose facilities that are two to six hours from the border like in Monterrey or Torreon or Tijuana or Juarez. Its one of the reasons that the north of Mexico has become known as Mexicos manufacturing hub. Its so close to the USA that it reduces the cost in comparison to Asia.

Part of the reason that Keen may have chosen Leon as a manufacturing point comes from how the city is considered the unofficial shoe capital of North America. The best suppliers, craftsmen, and brands congregate here for footwear. Before this point, the city had a long-held reputation for the quality of its rugged cowboy boots.

Today, Leon has become the capital of shoes, and they produce more shoes here than anywhere else in North America. This explains why Keen preferred this location over one closer to the USA. It does cost more to produce here than in China or even closer locales, but the quality beats that of China and elsewhere.

Do You Need Waterproof Hiking Shoes

When youre shopping for a new pair of hiking shoes, climate and terrain should be important considerations. If youre someone who often hikes in snowy, rainy, and generally wet/moist areas, getting waterproof footwear should be your top priority. Water-resistant shoes and boots will allow you to confidently cross shallow bogs and wade through ankle-deep streams.

Fortunately, both Keen and Merrell offer footwear that uses waterproofing technologies to keep the wearers feet dry in wet conditions. While not as popular as all-present Gore-Tex, Merrells M Select Dry and Keens Keen.Dry membranes are more than capable of preventing the moisture from getting inside ones shoes and boots.

Durand Ii: Best Keen Hiking Boot

Targhees may be Keens best sellers, but the Durand II is a better hiking boot. Its got a taller and more supportive ankle collar, for example, and a little more leather. That should equal a little more durability and performance for moderate day hiking or backpacking. This is also one of the best hiking boots for wide feet, thanks to Keens extra wide toe box. If you can spend $200+ on hiking boots, Id personally go with a more performance-oriented brand. However, dedicated Keen fans might like the Keen Durand II Mid as an upgrade over the more popular Targhees.

The Durand II is available in both standard and wide sizes for men and womencheck current prices and availability below:

Keen Voyageur Low: Best Hiking Shoe On A Budget

Now that the Targhee Low is above the budget price point, the Keen Voyageur is the brands best hiking shoe for hikers on limited budgets. The Voyageur is the shoe version of Keens famous Newport water sandalslooks and feels a lot like the Targhee. However, its not waterproof, replaces some leather with ventilating mesh , and costs a few bucks less. That makes the Voyageur a decent value choice, especially for desert hikers and fair-weather hikers who avoid wet trails and rainy hikes.

    Other Questions We Get Asked

Do I really need waterproof hiking shoes or boots? It all comes down to how and where you hike. For example, if you often backpack for days, or do long day hikes, hiking for miles with soggy feet can be uncomfortable and lead to blisters. On the other hand, if you are often doing short hikes and/or the chance of rain is low, its probably not that much of a risk. Obviously, if you live in Portland, Seattle, or another rainy climate, waterproof might be higher on your list of must-have features.

Will my feet sweat? You do sacrifice breathability when you choose a waterproof boot or shoe. Our KEEN.DRY bootie helps offset this by using microscopic holes that are big enough to let vapor escape without letting water in. However, if you tend to hike in very warm weather, you might consider KEEN sandals or vented, quick-dry hiking shoes.

How is it tested? All styles that use KEEN.DRY are randomly tested by a third party using a flex test in water. A sensor is placed inside the shoe, and the test simulates walking through the water. If at any point during the test the sensor detects moisture, a red light comes on and the test stops. Our shoes must exceed the industry standard of 15,000 flexes to be classified as waterproof. Our own standard is much higher: 50,000 flexes.
