Now that you have completed the wet test, reviewed your current shoes, and researched a few options, you are ready to head to your local running store to get professionally fitted.
Below are a few tips that I would recommend before heading to your local running store.
- Get fit in the afternoon. Head to the store later in the day so your feet are a little swollen. This will help make sure you get the right size
- Take a pair of socks. Most stores will allow you to run in a pair of shoes before you purchase. Having your own pair of socks will provide a more genuine experience. I recommend Balega socks.
- Wear running clothes. If you are going to run when getting fitted, it is suggested to have the same clothes you would actually run in.
- Pay attention to feel, not look. The best looking shoes arent always the best for you. Make sure you pay attention to the feel of the shoe, not the look. Once you decide on a shoe, buy the color you like best!
- You dont always need the latest model. Just like cars, new running shoe models come out every year. For the most part, the models dont change all that much . If your feet feel great with the previous model, you will be able to save some money.
Please note, you do not need to be professionally fitted each time you buy a pair of shoes.

Measure Your Foot Size
You will need: a piece of paper or cardboard, a tape measure or ruler, and a pen.
|Find a hard, flat surface and place the piece of paper on the floor.|
|Wear socks that are similar to what you plan to wear when running. Stand with one foot on the paper.|
|Keeping your body weight over your foot, trace a thin line around the outside of your entire foot. When drawing the line, hold the pen perpendicular to the ground.|
|Measure vertically down the length of your foot tracing. This is your foot length.|
|Measure horizontally across the widest part of your foot tracing. This is your foot width.|
|Repeat these steps for your other foot, and use the larger foot measurements when determining your running shoe size.|
Running Gaitthe Overpronation Gait
As I have already stated, all runners pronateto one degree or the other.
The forward roll of the foot following a foot strike helps distribute the shock of impact, reducing the risks of overuse injury in the process.
So, a little pronation is a good thing.
But a little too much can be problematic, resulting in overpronation, which is an exaggerated form of the foots natural inward roll.
The Ground Strike
During the overpronation gait, the foot lands on the outside of the heel, then pronates excessively inward, transferring the shock of the impact to the inner edge of the foot instead of the ball.
In theory, if you tend to overpronate, then you are risking knee pain and injury.
If the shoes have a slight or a substantial inward tilt along with signs of wear on the inside by the big toe, then you might have an overpronation running gait.
This gait type is mostly common among flat-footed and/or low arch runners.
Best Running Shoes?
The type of shoe you need depends on the degree to which you overpronate.
Stability shoes works very well for mild-overpronators.
But if you severely over-pronate, go for motion control running footwear.

What Does A Medial Wear Pattern On Running Shoes Mean
Medial wear on the bottom of your running shoe is caused by overpronation. Overpronation occurs when your foots natural inward cushioning roll is exaggerated, which can lead to:
- Foot, ankle, knee, and hip-related running injuries
- Arch collapse

The shoe reduces pronation with the help of two pieces of foam in the heel area that coax a foot into position. Runners World recommends it for runners with flat feet, noting, however, that the pronation mitigation is subtle enough to work well for a variety of runners. We found that to be true. The shoe has a 12-mm drop , but its equal to that of the Ghost 14. The Adrenaline GTS 21 has a roomy toe box with enough stretch to give toes wiggle room on a run. The shoes upper is supportive, and its laces tie securely and are plenty long enough to facilitate heel-lock lacing.

Neutral Vs Stability Running Shoes
Many running-shoe companies divide their shoes into two main categories: neutral and stability shoes. A neutral shoe wont affect your normal gait, but it will provide you with added support and cushion to protect your feet from the ground. Stability shoes, on the other hand, have denser foam along the arch of the foot. They may also have a stiffer heel, which reduces the foots side-to-side movement.
