How Do You Measure Shoe Size

Growing up, you likely had your shoe size measured at the store using a Brannock Device. Most high-end shoe stores will also have them, given that if youre going to drop a ton of money on a pair of designer shoes, you want to make sure they fit.

Before Charles Brannock patented the device in 1928, the only way to measure your shoe size was by using a block of wood. Brannocks father worked in the shoe business, and the son wanted to carry on the family legacy by making it even better. Using an Erector set, he constructed the device, usually made of metal or plastic, with knobs at both ends to fit the heel and to adjust for width.

A mens size one is actually 7-2/3 inches, and then each size is an additional 1/3 inch. Measuring the width is also linear, though each width size is measured by 3/16 of an inch. In the American system, there are nine widths AAA, AA, A, B, C, D, E, EE, and EEE. As you can imagine, the introduction of the Brannock device greatly improved by as much as 97 percent the accuracy of measuring your shoe size.

When you have big feet, figuring out your shoe size can be a little tricky. Most traditional shoe stores use the Brannock measuring device, but the standard device doesn’t measure larger sizes. We have a special Brannock device that measures up to men’s size 24, and have converted the measurements to a convenient online chart below.

To obtain the most accurate measurement, have someone else mark your feet for you so that you are standing up straight, full weight-bearing. Your feet likely won’t fit on a standard sized piece of paper, use a larger piece, or tape two pieces together.

1. Place a piece of blank paper on a hard floor.

2. Stand on the paper wearing a sock of medium thickness.

3. Holding a pencil vertically, place a mark at the end of your heel.

4. Place another mark at the tip of your longest toe.

5. Mark the sides of your foot at the widest part.

6. Measure your other foot using the same method.

• Place your sheet of paper on a hard surface. If you are standing on carpet, we recommend placing cardboard underneath to ensure accurate results.
• Trace the outline of your foot as closely as possible. Proceed to measuring the longest part of your foot, which runs from your heel to your longest toe. Write down your measurement.
• Next, measure the widest part of your foot . Again, write down your measurement.
• View the size charts above and start by matching your length measurement to the corresponding shoe size in the length chart. With your shoe size, match your width measurement as closely as possible in the width chart.

TIP: If you are in-between measurements, size up to ensure a comfortable fit!
