How Do You Measure Shoe Size
Growing up, you likely had your shoe size measured at the store using a Brannock Device. Most high-end shoe stores will also have them, given that if youre going to drop a ton of money on a pair of designer shoes, you want to make sure they fit.
Before Charles Brannock patented the device in 1928, the only way to measure your shoe size was by using a block of wood. Brannocks father worked in the shoe business, and the son wanted to carry on the family legacy by making it even better. Using an Erector set, he constructed the device, usually made of metal or plastic, with knobs at both ends to fit the heel and to adjust for width.
A mens size one is actually 7-2/3 inches, and then each size is an additional 1/3 inch. Measuring the width is also linear, though each width size is measured by 3/16 of an inch. In the American system, there are nine widths AAA, AA, A, B, C, D, E, EE, and EEE. As you can imagine, the introduction of the Brannock device greatly improved by as much as 97 percent the accuracy of measuring your shoe size.
Although it might not sound like it, measuring your shoe size with the device is relatively simple and easy to use. If you buy a pair of shoes at a high-end shoe store in the near future, youll likely see for yourself!

As someone who loves shoes, you would think that I would own more of them and yet, my very modest-sized closet can easily accommodate my paltry collectionif you can even call it that. It’s not like I’m trying to save up money , or that I have self-control when it comes to shopping . No, the reason why I just can’t seem to realize my shoe glut fantasy is due to another matter altogether: finicky fit and sizing.
In my experience, shopping for a fresh pair of kicks is on par with searching for new jeans. It typically begins with a sense of excitement, then moves on to feelings of frustration, and more times than not ends in disappointment. The thing is, there is no universal size chart that shoe manufacturers adhere to, and this lack of standardization is what accounts for inconsistencies in sizing . Still, that doesn’t mean all hope is lost. Thanks to my many shoe misadventures, I’ve picked up a few tips and tricks to help bring you one step closer to procuring perfect-fitting footwear.

Measure Your Shoe Size
When you have big feet, figuring out your shoe size can be a little tricky. Most traditional shoe stores use the Brannock measuring device, but the standard device doesn’t measure larger sizes. We have a special Brannock device that measures up to men’s size 24, and have converted the measurements to a convenient online chart below.
Special note: This tool is a guide, not a guarantee. Feet are 3-dimensional and this online measuring guide is 2-dimensional. It can assist you with determining your size of course, but nothing can take the place of trying on shoes for yourself. Please try on your new shoes indoors to ensure a proper fit in case you need to take advantage of our free exchange program.
Measure Your Feet
Your feet change during your lifetime. To make sure that you get the best possible fit and comfort, we suggest you follow the simple directions below each time you purchase new shoes. To obtain the most accurate measurement, have someone else mark your feet for you so that you are standing up straight, full weight-bearing. Your feet likely won’t fit on a standard sized piece of paper, use a larger piece, or tape two pieces together.
1. Place a piece of blank paper on a hard floor.
2. Stand on the paper wearing a sock of medium thickness.
3. Holding a pencil vertically, place a mark at the end of your heel.
4. Place another mark at the tip of your longest toe.
5. Mark the sides of your foot at the widest part.
6. Measure your other foot using the same method.
Why You Need To Measure Your Feet Regularly
Question: True or false? Most American shoe shoppers can correctly name their U.S. shoe size.
A study conducted by the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society found that 88 percent of women in the United States routinely wear shoes that are too small for their feet. Another study found that 70 percent of men regularly wear shoes that are the wrong shoe size.According to the International Journal of Clinical Practice, diabetic patients may be slightly more likely to wear shoes that fit, but the statistics are still alarming. A clinical study of 100 diabetics found that 63 diabetics in the research group were wearing shoes that were either too tight or too narrow. Considering that wearing poorly fitting shoes dramatically increases a diabetic patients risk of developing diabetic foot ulcers and other complications that can lead to the necessity of amputation doctors were deeply sobered by their findings.

Snowshoes For Mountain Terrain
If youll be exploring off-trail in the backcountry, crossing steep slopes, or moving through icy or thickly treed terrain, you need snowshoes made for mountains. To bite firmly into icy slopes, mountain snowshoes have spiky crampons under the toes and serrated traction under the heels. The most aggressive ones even have sharp teeth under the outer frames to chomp into slippery sections.
Mountain snowshoes are:
- Best for intermediate and experienced snowshoers.
- Great for using off-trail and on steep slopes since they have aggressive traction.
- Usually more lightweight than other snowshoes because theyre designed to wear over long distances or to strap to a backpack.
- Ideal for snowshoeing in western Canada.
Bring a plastic bag or two on your snowshoe adventures: one for sliding down the mountain, and one for picking up litter to help keep our trails pristine. MEC staff tip
