five test metrics

  • Weather Protection tests
  • Comfort and Fit tests
  • Durability tests

Since 2013, we’ve tested around 100 winter boots for women and men. We researched top brands and products in the women’s winter boot category and then put them to the test out in the field. Our testing process includes buying and using every pair of boots in our lineup. We put each pair through various tests to rate warmth, weather protection, comfort and fit, and more. We’ve spent hundreds of hours in the snow and cold playing, walking, and doing chores for a complete analysis.

Shaft Height::Insulation:REASONS TO BUY

The surprised us in every category with its super versatile design that maintained warmth and breathability throughout our testing period. The cozy liner and midsole support are great for indoor and outdoor work, and the supple rubber compound on the outsole is the perfect amount of traction for trail exploration. The exterior construction is both durable and lightweight, so you won’t feel like you’re strapped to a 5-pound weight when trudging uphill. These great features are only made sweeter by the fact that this is one of the most affordable boots in our review.

While this is an all-around all-star design, we wish there was more ankle coverage to keep snow away from our socks, and we would welcome a slightly stiffer and taller construction to increase stability and confidence on uneven terrain. We are also a bit wary of the rubber outsole wearing down due to its softer nature, but it held up fine throughout our testing period. Overall, this boot is a major bang for your buck if you’re looking for a versatile and high-performing boot that won’t break the bank. Merrell also .

Boot Height: Protection And Support

Sorel Joan of Arctic Boots

With a 12-inch shaft height, the Sorel Joan of Arctic is the tallest winter boot we’ve reviewed. A boot of this height offers far more coverage up the calf, meaning you get that much more warmth and weather protection in deep snow, puddles, and frigid temperatures. As we mentioned above, the Joan of Arctic is waterproof up to the top of the lacing, which is significantly more than a boot like the The North Face Shellista II. Furthermore, the fur cuff is effective in keeping snow from entering in from the top of the boot. That said, given the mass of the fur cuff, the boot does not offer much versatility in the event that you do need to layer extra protection overtop. Finally, in terms of maneuverability, the suede upper has plenty of give to it, making the boot manageable for driving a car or riding a bikealthough don’t expect much support.

  • Our Analysis And Test Results

The Joan of Arctic is a cute and classic workhorse boot that will keep your toes toasty and your pants drier than ever. That said, while we love its ample warmth and protection, it is super heavy and not very comfortable for everyday wear. It’s an excellent option for standing outside in cold temperatures but don’t plan on taking it out on your next technical winter hike.

    Shaft Height:Insulation:REASONS TO BUY

This rendition of the brought some fashionable and functional improvements to the previous Shellista design. The boot’s lightweight and fuzzy construction stood out among the rest for comfort and fit. We were impressed with the Shellista’s barely-there feel and slipper-like comfort and found ourselves reaching for this pair when heading to work on cold mornings or for late fall drive-in movie screenings at the local theater. We also loved the 10 inches of coverage the boot provides to keep our lower legs dry when trudging through tall snowdrifts.

The Shellista has a flexible yet durable upper that resists rough conditions but lacks an overall sense of stability. This is fine for casual use but left us hanging when stomping through uneven snow or sliding along icy trails. Paired with an absence of sticky lugs, we didn’t feel entirely comfortable on most slippery surfaces. But, if you’re looking for an everyday boot that eliminates bulkiness while keeping you warm and dry, this is a great choice.

Isn’t The Bsl The Same As Mondo Point

Sorel Joan of Arctic Lace Boot | Shoes.com

Nope! The mondo point size is the generic boot size that every boot maker uses it. Think of it as a shoe size, like a “size 11” for example. The boot sole length is the literal length from toe to heel of that boot, measured in millimeters. It’s entirely possible and very common for boots with the same Mondo Point to have different Boot Sole Lengths. Because ski bindings are so precise, it’s crucial to have them mounted to the BSL and not the Mondo Point.

    How Do I Find It

Finding your Boot Sole Length is easy. On your ski boot, there will be a 3 digit number on the outside or inside heel of one or both of your boots. Keep in mind that there shouldn’t be a decimal . If the number you see has a decimal, then youre probably looking at your Mondo Point size which isnt accurate enough to use when mounting bindings. Other hints that you’re looking at the Mondo Point and not the BSL would be if it looks something like “270/275” or if the number is found on the bottom of the boot. If youve looked all over and still cant find your BSL, its also acceptable to measure along the bottom of the boot from the very tip of the toe, to back of the heel- just make sure you measure in Millimeters!

Sorel Women’s Joan Of Arctic Boots

The Joan of Arctic is a classic style winter boot from Sorel that has become one of the most popular winter boots on the market. When you start looking at the awesome style and all the function and features that come along with it, there’s really no wonder why it’s been so successful. The Joan of Arctic is a great example of Sorel’s commitment to both function and fashion and is a perfect blend of both. We love the classic style that’s been updated and refined with detailed features like lace grommets and the faux fur cuff with snap closure. They’re easy to pair with just about any outfit and keep you looking fashionable while being protected from nasty winter weather. Of course, because they’re Sorels, they’re 100% waterproof both on the upper and lower boot. They also have a removable 6 mm felt liner that provides great insulation. Sorel gives each of their winter boots a temperature rating and the Joan of Arctic is rated all the way down to negative 25 degrees Fahrenheit. Even when the weather gets super cold you can go out confident your feet will stay warm, dry, and cozy. The herringbone grip on the vulcanized rubber outsole gives the boot great traction in snow and other wet, slippery conditions.

Add Sorel Joan Of Arctic Boots To Your Winter Wardrobe

Whether you need winter boots for the snow or are simply looking for fashionable footwear for the cooler months, SOREL products are a great option. The Joan of Arctic boots come in a variety of styles, colors, and materials, providing an array of footwear for nearly any occasion.

How do you care for leather SOREL boots?

This material is very durable, but it is important to care for this material to protect it from water, dust, and oil damage. Periodically use a slightly damp cloth to wipe dirt and other substances from the surface of the shoes. For suede, use a soft-bristled brush or a specialized leather brush or eraser to remove dirt from the surface.

For extra protection, there are creams and sprays that can be used to repel dust, water, and other substances. When storing these shoes, keep them in a cool, dry place, and place them in a box or bag if they are being stored for longer periods of time.

    Are SOREL Joan boots waterproof?

Some of these SOREL boots use SOREL?s waterproofing technology to keep your feet dry in rainy and snowy conditions. They use waterproof materials and incorporate tight seams. Not all SOREL footwear is classified as waterproof, but many options are water-resistant and are also effective in keeping water out in mild inclement weather. In this case, specialized sprays can be used to further repel water if desired.

Sorels Joan of Arctic lineup includes a diverse selection of boots, including the Wedge collection, which feature 3-inch heels and sleek city style, and the more casual Explorer Joan and Joan Uptown boots. And although fairly distinct in design, the Sorel Caribou is a nice mens alternative to the Joan of Arctic, featuring a 9.25-inch shaft height, waterproof nubuck leather upper, and similar removable felt liner. The Caribou retails for $170 and comes in three colorways and a few variations at the time of publishing.

Boot Sole Length: What Is It

Your boot sole length is the actual length of your ski boot, in millimeters. This is the number that our ski techs will use to mount your bindings. While youll still need a final adjustment done before you can ski, providing us with your boot sole length is absolutely crucial if youd like us to send your skis pre-mounted with your bindings.

    What We Like

    • Premium materials and high-quality construction make this an extremely well-built and durable winter boot.
    • With a suede upper, metal eyelets, faux-fur cuff, and high attention to detail overall, this boot scores high in terms of style points.
    • Great at keeping moisture out. The tall height, waterproof build, and fully gusseted tongue provide serious protection up to your mid-calf.
    • Thin felt liner and uninsulated shell mean that warmth is limited.
    • Heavy build can be clunky and cumbersome for anything more than short walks around town.
    • This boot is the least comfortable of all the models we tested, with pressure points, bunching of fabric, slippage, and a noticeably heavy feel.
    • The oversized faux-fur cuff makes it challenging to layer underneath snow pants or gaiters.
