Buying Guide For Best Mens Snow Boots

A snow boot is not something to protect you from just the cold its a piece of gear that protects you from snow, mud, water, and the cold. Unlike regular winter boots, snow boots have high shafts and are typically waterproof, keeping you warm and dry as you trudge through the toughest snow of winter.

The conditions you will be dealing with should inform the type of snow boots you select. Boot elements such as outsole, insulation, breathability, and lacing system should all be taken into consideration.

When it comes to your winter gear, your boots are the last item to ignore, as they can keep you outside for longer periods and keep your toes and feet safe.

Lowa Mens San Francisco Gtx Lo Surround

The lower-profile style is lighter weight and easier to pack than a hiking boot, but still protects feet on uneven walking surfaces like trails and cobblestone streets. Its a packable and warm sneaker-style shoe that can take the place of heavy boots for some trips.

Waterproofing: The gold standard for waterproof shoes and clothing is Gore-Tex, a finely woven waterproof membrane that locks out moisture while remaining breathable. But the majority of winter boots are simply treated with a durable-water-repellent coating that can be perfectly adequate for milder climates. If you live in Portland and its pouring 200 days a year, DWR is going to do nothing, explains footwear designer and lecturer Igor Burt. But if you live in California, you shouldnt be buying Gore-Tex shoes. For extra puddle protection, Burt suggests looking for boots made from leather with minimal seams and stitching. The more stitches on the outside of the boot, the less waterproof it is, he advises. A vulcanized rubber outsole will give an additional rainbootlike effect.

Insulation: If you have multiple boots and youre going to use only one boot when temperatures are below freezing, look for insulation, advises Burt. You should be able to feel it with your fingers on the inside of the boot. If its the same material inside and outside, you know theres no insulation. He points out that if youre spending less time in extreme conditions, theres an easy hack for warming up a winter boot and preventing blisters in the process: Build insulation yourself in the form of moisture-wicking wool socks. You can choose when you want to use it and customize according to conditions.

Critical Winter Boot Considerations

WEIGHT – Winter boots can weigh 4-7 lbs., but we prefer styles that keep bulk and weight to a minimum for hiking or casual use. For those of us that are used to wearing trail runners, lightweight boots will feel more familiar, comfortable, and far less clunky on the feet. Lighter footwear also takes less of a toll on your body, is generally less stiff, and is easier to break-in.

Columbia Fairbanks: 2 lb. 3.4 oz. Vs. Baffin Impact 6 Lb. Oz.

LINERS – Some boots have removable liners which makes it easy to wash them, dry them out quickly, and replace them as needed. But they can also give the boot a looser, less specific fit. A boot dryer can be helpful for quickly drying out wet/sweaty boots with non-removable liners . A loose fit isnt really an issue for snow boots youll use primarily for shoveling the walk. For boots youll be hiking or walking around town in, more closely-fitting liners will feel less cumbersome and floppy to walk in.

INSOLES – Upgrading your insoles to cushier, warmer, or more supportive aftermarket insoles like Superfeet can improve the fit and comfort of most boots. Just remember, youll need a little extra room for them to fit properly.
