What Did You Do To Convince People In The Organisation You Could Achieve Those Bold Ambitions
ROBERT: The running challenge was about taking modest steps of accomplishment. In 2008, we sponsored one significant marathon, the Chicago Marathon, and it was expiring. We debated, internally, as to whether we should keep it or not, and we chose to step away. A decade later, we now have the New York City Marathon, the London Marathon, and while we don’t sponsor the Boston Marathon, we guerrilla market around it. So, our brand is front and centre at the three biggest marathons in the world. We couldn’t have got there in one step, we had to take those steps of confidence. Importantly, those investments got our people and our partners to believe that we could become number one.

CHRIS: When we first decided to get into baseball, we were doggy paddling in a lot of different sports. We were in cheerleading, volleyball, American football, I think even field hockey, at one point. So, it took saying no to all of those things and really focusing our energy on baseball. Five or six years later, were number one in baseball. And that really served us a beta test of other sports, for the organisation. So, finding that proof point, and then making it uniformly replicable across all other sports that we were going into.

What Do New Balance’s Numbers Mean
The brand was so stubborn about avoiding typical marketing tactics to try and skew customers perception, they avoided gimmicky naming conventions for their styles altogether and went the route of a functional coding system to objectively differentiate their models. Their 6-7 digit code may seem complex or nonsensical, but its actually quite simple.
The first letter or two signifies the gender and/or training type, i.e. M = Mens, W = Womens, T=Trail, or whether theyre manufactured in the US or UK. The next two numbers indicate the level of innovation and performance you can expect, as well as the price tag you can expect to see smacked onto it. Then, the next set of numbers set the range of performance, starting with a focus on control at 40,” moving to stability, cushion and comfort in the 50″ to 70 range. The RC Elite is like a magic shoe. While they dont feel like anything special during runs, the magic happens whenever I look at my average speed after a run and I cant believe my pace.
Its always 10-15 seconds faster than I thought it would be, after every run in them.
A lot of the magic comes from the high efficiency of the shoe. While being very cushioned, the combination of the soft foam and the carbon plate work together seamlessly to create a pleasant ride that isnt jarring.

While many carbon-plated racers were designed for the full marathon distance, very few of them actually offer enough cushioning and protection for 42.2 kilometres.
The FuelCell RC Elite is one of them that does exactly what it is intended to do. It handles marathon distances with ease. For me, the RC Elite is so soft that any race shorter than a full marathon is not in its wheelhouse.
I think that many elite runners will feel that the RC Elite is even too soft for marathons and doesnt have a firm enough toe-off for record setting runs.
It was only 5 years ago that elites were using racing flats for marathons with minimal cushioning.
I use my RC Elites for long runs over 20 kilometres at marathon pace. For anything shorter at faster paces I feel like the midsole is too soft and gets in the way.
I found them to be less versatile than the Alphafly but they possess a lot more long-distance comfort.
