Thing You Should Know Before You Measure Your Feet:

  • It is best to measure your feet after a full day of walking because walking can slightly increase the size of your feet.
  • It is best to measure your feet wearing the type of socks or stockings you will be wearing in the shoe you plan to purchase. Only measure your feet while barefoot if you plan to wear shoes over your bare feet.
  • Remember that the difference in shoe size measurements is often as small as 1/8 of an inch, so your foot measurements will need to be equally detail-oriented to be effective. Rounding up or down will decrease the accuracy of the measurement and your likelihood of finding a good shoe fit.

How Tight Should Running Shoes Be

  • Mid-Sole

The mid-sole provides you the stability and support that your foot needs while walking or running. It is important that this section of the shoe be snug, even without laces. Be careful that you shoe is not too tight, though. It might not be able to accommodate your foot once it begins to swell during your run. Think of it as being breathable or adaptable.

  • Heel

A loose fit at the heel has caused blisters for many a runner. The heel should be snug at most, but still loose enough not to be constricting. This can be tested simply by walking around a bit. Too much movement and slipping, and your shoe is too large. If the shoe is difficult to get on or off over your heel, its too small.

Measure Your Foot Size

You will need: a piece of paper or cardboard, a tape measure or ruler, and a pen.

Find a hard, flat surface and place the piece of paper on the floor.
Wear socks that are similar to what you plan to wear when running. Stand with one foot on the paper.
Keeping your body weight over your foot, trace a thin line around the outside of your entire foot. When drawing the line, hold the pen perpendicular to the ground.
Measure vertically down the length of your foot tracing. This is your foot length.
Measure horizontally across the widest part of your foot tracing. This is your foot width.
Repeat these steps for your other foot, and use the larger foot measurements when determining your running shoe size.

    I explored this topic in another post which you can read here, but suffice to say that running shoes should be bigger than your casual or dress shoes. Its important to understand that your feet expand when they get warm, which they do when you run. The further you run, the more they can expand. In MY experience

    Your running shoe should be around half a size larger than your normal foot size to account for expansion of your foot when running.

    There is a BUT here and it does need to be taken into account. Be careful that you dont go too far and so how do you know your running shoe is TOO big.

    Here is a picture of one of my pairs of current Adidas running shoes . As you can see, I can fit two fingers between the eyelets so these shoes are about the right fit.

    I am a size 11 , all of my running shoes until a couple of years ago were size 11. I suffered repeated blistering and toe holes when training and running long distance events. It was starting to get expensive and in one case I had a toe hole after one pair of running shoes had only completed a half marathon!

    How To Lace Running Shoes

    How you lace your running shoes can make a big difference in terms of fit. If youre new to running and unsure which style of lacing to choose, ask a shoe expert for help.

    Beyond that, Lobkova recommends using the style that provides the snuggest fit: Laces that are too loose and too tight are common signs that the shoe is not the right fit, and the lacing is being done to compensate for poor fit.

    In general, Holland says, make sure the shoe fit is correct before you consider lacing techniques.

    Measure The Arch Length

    An important part of the shoe fit is the arch length. The arch length is measured from your heel to the ball of your foot . The bend in your big toe should match with where the shoe bends.

    With both shoes on, rise up onto your toes. If you feel the shoe bend before or after the big toe joint, then the shoe is not a good fit for your arch length.
