Best Made In Usa New Balance
This is largely subjective, but the best Made In USA New Balance from a materials standpoint is the 998. Aesthetically, the 990v3, 992 or 997 currently reign supreme, depending on what type of silhouette you are looking for.
The 992 was one of the it sneakers of 2020. Currently, the 990v3 is the latest hot retro model from the brand. The 990v5 is technically not a retro, but will be once the V6 releases. All the rest of the models make for great, high quality retros with high retail prices and stupendous levels of suede and leather.
Some of my favorites include the 990v1, 990v2, 992, 997 and 998. As far as quality goes, the 998 in my experience has the best suede of any Made In USA NB Ive owned. While Im sure this is merely my perception, I do find it interesting that among all the New Balances Ive bought, the 998s stand out. The sneaker usually has lush textures covering the bulk of pairs. When someone references high quality New Balance suede, I immediately picture the 998.
As far as shape, I lean towards the 997 for its sloped toebox and overall pointy aesthetic. Very 90s! It basically looks like a right angle triangle in profile view. This matches up with other popular silhouettes that released around the same time such as the Air Max 3.
Collaborations And Brand Ambassadors
The company has launched products in collaboration with apparel company Aimé Leon Dore, NBA star Kawhi Leonard, and British fashion designer Paul Smith. The company’s brand ambassadors include Boston Red Sox Shortstop Xander Bogaerts, entertainer Jaden Smith and US Olympic sprinter Sydney McLaughlin. In July 2021, it was announced that South Korean superstar IU will be partnering with New Balance as a brand ambassador for its “We Got Now” campaign.

In an old brick mill building in Skowhegan, Maine, production line workers are cutting, stitching and gluing New Balance sneakers. The company calls them lifestyle shoes, better known for their looks than their athletic performance.
“The lifestyle shoes have really been on fire, especially with the younger market that we’ve been after for years. It’s more of an iconic fashion statement,” says the plant’s manager, Raye Wentworth. She is watching a steady stream of New Balance 1400s being assembled. They’re classic-looking sneakers in grey suede and blue nylon, with the letter N prominent on the sides.

Performance Miusa New Balance Shoes
The overwhelming focus of the Made lines are retros and the latest 990 version. However New Balance does occasionally produce technical runners such as the 1540v3 in the United States.
Or at least they did. As of April 2021, NB claims the sneakers are no longer produced in the US. When searching the Made In USA sneakers on their website, the 1540v3 still comes up though!
So, while NB may focus on retro silhouettes for the majority of MiUSA releases, they do sometimes produce modern running shoes under the umbrella. Still, I personally think of the Made-line New Balances as casual sneakers more than performance sneakers overall.
New Balances Made In Usa Claims
Twenty-four years after New Balance escaped the federal inquiry into its deceptive U.S.-origin claims without having to pay any sort of financial penalty after the FTC dropped what one lone dissenting commissioner the most important allegation involving unqualified Made in USA claims for products assembled in the United States from foreign and domestic components the now multibillion-dollar company continues to mislead consumers on where some of its shoes are made, flouting the FTCs Made in USA standard in the process.
On this patriotic Memorial Day weekend, lets take another look at how New Balance is taking advantage of consumers preference to buy American-made.
Having been the subject of an FTC inquiry into its made in the USA marketing, New Balance should be familiar with the agencys all or virtually all standard for unqualified U.S.-origin claims. These are the types of claims that have no qualifying language added to them, such as with domestic and foreign parts. Its simply: Made in the USA. Or: Made in America. Yet New Balance publicly acknowledges that the company labels its shoes Made in the USA when the domestic value is at least 70%, which is not all or virtually all by any stretch of the imagination.

Where Are New Balance Shoes Made
New Balance footwear is made in China, Indonesia, Vietnam, the USA, and the UK.
The majority of the New Balance footwear is made between China and Vietnam. Virtually all of the New Balance shoes and shoeboxes I checked at the store were made in China.
Keep in mind that the American brand is transitioning the footwear outsourcing from China to Vietnam, so you will start finding a lot more Made In Vietnam sneakers.
The New Balance shoes I remember selling were Made In China, but also in Vietnam and Indonesia. I never found any sneakers Made In England, but the website of the brand states they have a collection with shoes manufactured in the UK.
New Balance also says they have Made In USA shoes on the website, but we know that those shoes are not 100% Made In USA.

Is New Balance Made In China
Yes, many New Balance apparel, accessories, and footwear products are Made In China.
In the 2020 annual report, New Balance says, We outsource the production of our products to independent manufacturers, which are primarily located in Asia.
The American sports brand has on-site supervisory offices in China and Vietnam to help independent manufacturers with anything to ensure the products are manufactured according to the New Balance guidelines.

We all know many brands manufacture in China due to the inexpensive materials and cheap labor. However, in the 2020 annual report, New Balance states that they are transitioning footwear sourcing from China to Vietnam due to the uncertainty for all US businesses that source or market in China . Some American brands like Columbia and Levis are doing the same.

U.S. exports to China are still dwarfed by U.S. imports. And Frisbie says heavy taxes and other market barriers make American products expensive in China. But he says China’s fast-growing middle class is now estimated at 300 million people, and that creates a lot of consumer demand.
Steve Gardner, a manager of the lifestyle division at New Balance headquarters in Boston, wouldn’t disclose the percentage of its U.S.-made shoes being exported to China. But he says demand is strong all over the world.
“Whether it’s Europe, the U.S., Asia, I think there has been an incredible embrace that, in the first case, probably came from the Japanese market much earlier than a lot of the rest of the world, but now we are seeing a very global embrace of ‘Made in USA,’ ” Gardner says.

No, not all New Balance shoes are made in America. They claim that 1 out of every 4 pairs of shoes we sell in the USA was made or assembled in American factories, by American workers. They key phrase there: made or assembled. New Balance gets many of their materials overseas, including their outer soles, which are made in China. Many of their popular shoes, like the 1540s, are made in Vietnam.
Additionally, New Balance is likely fooling you in their marketing. They label products to be Made in the USA when they are only 70% domestic! Heres the direct quote from their website: where the domestic value is at least 70%, we label our shoes Made in the USA. There has been an ongoing legal dispute since the 1990s with the FTC and New Balance. The FTC has a all or virtually all standard when it comes to using the Made in USA label, which it seems New Balance was in violation of.
Here is the statement from their website. Even though they do not make their products 100% in the U.S., it is a plus that they are still supporting American manufacturing with over 7,000 local employees.

Most New Balance products are Made in Asia, including China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, and Cambodia. The American brand also manufactures in the USA and the UK.
New Balance is one of those brands that, in my opinion, want to hide where their products are made and want to give their customers a perception that the majority of their goods are made in the USA.

One of the reasons why I believe this is because they dont state the country of origin on their website, and you have to wait to get the physical product to verify it. This is very common in many brands .
When you buy a physical product, you can check where the product is manufactured since the US legislation, and EU rules require the brands to determine the country of origin for any imported goods when it comes to physical goods.

New Balance is proud of producing 4 million shoes in the USA every year , and I think thats great. However, on the New Balance website, you have a collection of shoes named Made In USA, but the shoes from that collection dont even represent 10% of the shoes they have on the website.
When I was in New Balance stores and other stores that sell the American sports brand, I didnt find one single product, Made In USA. When it came to shoes, I only found shoes Made In China.

I cant remember having a pair of New Balance shoes, but I did sell many to customers when I worked for Sports Direct. However, I do have some running tops that I really like.
New Balance is an American brand, but that doesnt mean all its products are made in the USA. To confirm, I have decided to review hundreds of product descriptions on the New Balance website to verify if the brand lists where the products are made. I also visited a couple of New Balance stores and some stores that sell New Balance products, checking multiple items. So lets find out where New Balance is manufactured.
Is New Balance Made In The Usa
Yes, some New Balance products are Made In USA. However, I only found shoes Made In USA and not any apparel or accessories.
Now I have told you that New Balance manufactures in the USA, but if you read what they state again, it says: Where the domestic value is at least 70%, we label our shoes Made in the USA.
That means that the shoes start and end the manufacturing in the USA, but that doesnt mean they are 100% made there. The other 30% of the shoe can be made in China, Indonesia, or Vietnam. Again, this is misleading for customers because not everyone goes to the site to confirm that the shoes are Made in the USA. Instead, they will read the label and believe what is stated there.

In September 2021, the nonprofit organization TINA.org filed a complaint to FTC against New Balance. The FTC requires that products marketed as Made In USA need to be 100% manufactured in the United States, which is not the case.
I wouldnt be surprised if New Balance has to pay a hefty fine, change their marketing strategy, and state where the other 30% of materials are from for the Made In USA products.
